A citizen's guide to making the big city a place where we can afford to live. Housing is increasingly unattainable in successful global cities, and Toronto is no exception - in part because of zoning that protects "stable" residential neighborhoods with high property values. ''House Divided'' is a citizen's guide for changing the way housing can work in big cities. Using Toronto as a case study, this anthology unpacks the affordability crisis and offers innovative ideas for creating housing for all ages and demographic groups. With charts, maps, data, and policy prescriptions, ''House Divided'' poses tough questions about the issue that will make or break the global city of the future.

Now, with New Labour capsized, Owen Hatherley sets out to explore the wreckage — the architecture that epitomized an age of greed and selfish aspiration. From riverside apartment complexes, art galleries and amorphous interactive “centers” to shopping malls, call centers and factories turned into expensive lofts, Hatherley maps the derelict Britain of the 2010s, an emphatic expression of a failed politics.

Résumé:
If there is, indeed, nothing lovelier than a tree, Connecticut-based artist Bryan Nash Gill (1961-2013) showed us why. Creating prints from cross sections of trees, Gill revealed the sublime power locked inside their arboreal rings, patterns not only of great beauty but also a year-by-year record of the life and times of the fallen or damaged logs. The artist rescued the wood from the property surrounding his studio and neighboring land, extracted and prepared blocks of various species--including ash, maple, oak, spruce, and willow--and then printed them by carefully following and pressing the contours of the rings until the intricate designs transferred from tree to paper.

Résumé:
"Reviving America's forgotten neighborhoods" brings a new angle to the urban redevelopment discussion by expanding the definition of successful revitalization beyond higher property values and income levels. In this important work, Elise Bright argues for a more holistic approach to measuring community development. In-depth case studies on a range of American cities--including Seattle, Milwaukee, the Twin Cities, Boston, and Pittsburgh--examine both successes and failures of inner city revitalization efforts. Drawing on field research and interviews with a variety of subject-city officials, planners, community activists and residents, Bright shows how factors such as communication between residents, shelter, and a feeling of safety can help save even the most devastated neighbourhoods.

Résumé:
As urban life is reimagined for greater sustainability, resilience, and adaptation, this publication invites readers to fully engage with the possibilities of how we can coexist with our urban habitats. Ursula Lang uses the yard as a faceted lens through which to examine the multiple and contradictory ways people live in urban environments, and how perceptions of those environments are shaped by contemporary environmental policies and projects. Visual ethnography and narrative illustrate how inhabitants of Minneapolis live with their yards as sites of social and environmental care while also negotiating difference. Throughout, Lang’s subjects engage in diverse and creative everyday practices of cultivation and property ownership, often quite distinct from the environmental policies and projects in place.
