Résumé:
Strong and ironic, material and program-based, contained and purposeful are some of the adjectives that could be used to sum up the sound and lucid oeuvre of Piet and Wim Eckert (born in 1968 and in 1969, respectively). After graduating at the ETH Zürich and a period working at the studio of Rem Koolhaas in Rotterdam and living in cities like Los Angeles or Seoul, they set up their own office, E2A, in 2001. Two decades later, AV Monographs gathers a selection of twenty works that reflect the intellectual maturity and constructive precision of the Zurich-based studio. Despite the scarce geographic variety (only two of the buildings featured are outside of Switzerland), the projects published on these pages address a wide range of programs, from schools to sport centers and headquarters for newspapers, foundations or factories via single-family houses, apartment buildings, mixed-use blocks and even a police station.

Résumé:
In their new book, the international CARTHA network engages with the question of forming identity in society and the role that architecture plays in this process. Inspired by Jacques Lacan’s approach from psychoanalysis, CARTHA’s members break down the identity-formation process into four sub-steps, which they explore in interviews: Maarten Delbeke, professor of history and theory of architecture at ETH Zurich, talks about ''Assimilation''; Frederike Lausch, researcher at TU Darmstadt’s Department of Architecture, about ''Appropriation''; Rob Krier, Berlin and Liguria-based architect and sculptor, about ''Denial'', and Jonathan Sergison, London-based architect, about ''Reconciliation''. These conversations make up the cornerstones for a new, experimental design methodology, which has been tested in practice by architecture firms Bruther (Bordeaux), Bureau Spectacular (Los Angeles), Conen Sigl (Zurich), Made In (Geneva / Zurich), Monadnock (Rotterdam), Studio Muoto (Paris), and Sam Jacob Studio (London). ''CARTHA—Building Identity'' features a variety of buildings—houses, cottages, apartments—designed in the context of these insights.

Résumé:
Is the capital of Latin America a small island at the mouth of the Hudson River? Will California soon hold the balance of power in Mexican national politics? Will Latinos reinvigorate the US labor movement? These are some of the provocative questions that Mike Davis explores in this fascinating account of the Latinization of the US urban landscape. As he forefully shows, this is a demographic and cultural revolution with extraordinary implications. With Spanish surnames increasing five times faster than the general population, salsa is becoming the predominant ethnic rhythm (and flavor) of contemporary city life. In Los Angeles, Houston, San Antonio, and (shortly) Dallas, Latinos outnumber non-Hispanic whites; in New York, San Diego and Phoenix they outnumber Blacks. According to the Bureau of the Census, Latinos will supply fully two-thirds of the nation’s population growth between now and the middle of the 21st century when nearly 100 millions Americans will boast Latin American ancestry.

Résumé:
The world is facing unprecedented challenges, from climate change and population growth, to political division and technological dislocation, to declining mental health and fraying cultural fabric. With most of the planet’s population now living in urban environments, cities are the spaces where we have the greatest potential to confront and address these problems. In this visionary book, Vishaan Chakrabarti argues for an "architecture of urbanity," showing how the design of our communities can create a more equitable, sustainable, and joyous future for us all. Taking readers from the great cities of antiquity to the worldwide exurban sprawl of our postindustrial age, Chakrabarti examines architecture’s relationship to history’s greatest social, technological, and environmental dilemmas. He then presents a rich selection of work by a global array of practicing architects, demonstrating how innovative design can dramatically improve life in big cities and small settlements around the world, from campuses and refugee camps to mega-cities like São Paulo, Lima, Los Angeles, New York, Paris, and Tokyo.

Résumé:
Kyle Cooper is acclaimed as one of the most innovative and important designer of film titles since Saul Bass. This attractive and informative book offers the first critical and historical assessment of Cooper's impressive design achievements. In this book, Andrea Codrington relates that Cooper's work first garnered major attention in 1995 with his creation of the extraordinary title sequence for the horror thriller "Seven", which is credited with bringing about a renaissance in innovative film title design. Seven's titles were touted as short films in their own right-not merely a "design solution" but a metaphorical representation of the film as a whole. Codrington also discusses Cooper's work at the titles specialist R.Greenberg before he founded in 1996 his own Los Angeles based company, Imaginary Forces. As creative director there, Cooper now oversees a ninety-person team and has designed a stunning succession of highly regarded titles for such films as "Eraser", "Mission impossible", "Twister", "The mummy", "The horse whisperer", "The negotiator", and "Arlington road".

Résumé:
In recent years metal as a construction material has been experiencing a renaissance. Its diverse qualities and versatility mean that it is an ideal material for many different applications. Gone are the days when metal was only used for the roofing and facades of industrial sheds. In the meantime architecture and industry have discovered its aesthetic qualities, using it to cover theatres, museums, and exhibition buildings with shimmering layers of copper and titanium. It enables extravagant forms to be constructed, and even in low-cost, prefabricated buildings, metal can be used in new and interesting ways. It has become an integral factor in creating intelligent architectural solutions which meet the requirements of clients, investors and architects. ”Metal architecture” documents some 21 international projects which show not only the creative elements but also the economic advantages of metal. Of particular note are the Drive-Inn Restaurant in Slovenia, loft apartments in Los Angeles, and the harbour control tower in Lisbon.

Mary Heilmann is one of the most important abstract painters of her generation. Her distinctively fluid, humorous, and bright canvases combine the modes of Abstract Expressionism with a vibrant Pop sensibility. Heilmannn's 1979 painting in hot pink and black, evocatively titled Save the Last Dance for Me, marked a shift in the artist's perspective. Heilmann describes it: "Now the work came from a different place. Instead of working out of modernist non-image formalism, I began to see that the choices in the work depended more on content for their meaning." This beautifully illustrated study of Save the Last Dance for Me explores the development of Heilmann's work, and the way it continues to engage us—psychologically, sensually, and socially. Terry R. Myers is a lecturer, critic, and independent curator based in Los Angeles, Visiting Lecturer at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and Adjunct Associate Professor at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena.

Résumé:
The Purist movement in art, founded by Charles-Édouard Jeanneret (better known as Le Corbusier) and Amedée Ozenfant, championed a traditional classicism while it simultaneously embraced new technologies and materials. The only book on Purism, "L'Esprit Nouveau" is a key contribution to the study of classic 20th-century modernism in painting and architecture. The book serves as the catalogue for an exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The title examines over 75 paintings by Le Corbusier, Ozenfant, and their closest colleague, Fernand Léger. At the heart of the study lies a single work: Le Corbusier's striking design of the Pavillon de l'Esprit Nouveau for the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs, at which the term "Art Deco" was coined. The architecture of Le Corbusier's pavilion, along with its interior decoration - paintings, sculpture, furniture, glassware, rugs, and other objects - offers a complete summation of Purist aesthetics. Included here too is the full translated text of Le Corbusier's and Ozenfant's 1918 manifesto, "Après le cubisme".

Résumé:
In his most syncretic writing yet, radical urban theorist Mike Davis explores the combat zone that is contemporary urban America, a ceaseless battle waged both within cities and against nature. Using environmental science as his frame of understanding, Davis examines themes of urban life today—white flight, deindustrialization, housing and job segregation and discrimination, and federal policy—and looks at areas he calls "national sacrifice zones," military landscapes that simulated warfare and arms production have rendered uninhabitable. Davis begins our apocalyptically inflected tour with a trip to New York’s Ground Zero. He then takes us to "German Village," a Utah wasteland that was once a test site for Allied science advisors to rehearse the perfect plan for destroying Berlin, and to the diabolic miracle of Las Vegas, where environmental terrorism is practiced in the name of urban development. Davis also hits Los Angeles, the frontline of the "Second Civil War" sparked by American apartheid, and which lies waiting to be ignited in cities across the country.
