In this volume, twenty scholars explore the work of two of the twentieth century’s greatest architectural historians: the American Henry-Russell Hitchcock (1903–1987) and the Englishman Sir John Summerson (1904–1992). Both men undertook architectural training and became key polemical figures in the establishment of Modernism in the 1930s. After the war, and especially in the 1950s, both turned more exclusively to historical research and writing. While their areas of interest overlapped, their approaches greatly differed. The contributors to the book investigate the work and methodologies of Summerson and Hitchcock, from their interests in the Northern European (as opposed to Italian) Renaissance, through their studies of the nineteenth century as a precursor to their own times, to their involvement in contemporary issues of design and conservation. The book enhances our understanding of the influences that shaped these two important figures and of the place of architecture within the social and cultural environment.

"Perspecta 34" explores the temporary relationship between architecture and the larger contexts within which social crisis and cultural transformation take place. The issue examines many questions associated with modernism, including the limits of utopian urban planning, and considers alternatives to space as the dominant organizing concept for architecture. It views the contemporary as a fluid practice in which games, intuition, collective imagination, and style emerge alongside conventional architectural approaches as ways to comprehend and shape the temporary landscape. Case studies--on the Olympics, Belgrade protests, refugee housing--ask how temporary events intensify the possibilities and limitations for architectural innovation. Perspecta 34 also explores the built environment as an ecology of change consisting of dynamic economies, movements of people, and overlapping systems of authority. The issue includes a portfolio of twentieth-century temporary projects that reflect changing ideas of fabrication, the deployment of the architectural object, and architecture's relationship to social and cultural practices.

Clark and Charles Menefee III, inspired by the "thin shacks and sheds of insubstantial beauty" of the Southern vernacular building tradition, are known for structures that are at once modest, rigorous, and economical in detail. They blend the ease and informality of the architecture of the historic South with the elegance of end-of-the-century modernism. This balance between continuity and change is evident throughout their work. This monograph of 13 projects--eight built, five unbuilt--reveals the architects' ideas and intentions while reflecting the spirit they bring to each design. Projects such as Middleton Inn, Croffead House, Lucy Daniels Foundation, Charleston Bus Stops, and 8 Bedon's Alley are presented through duotone photographs and drawings, which exemplify the simplicity and rigor of the architects' work. The author's critical analysis of each project highlights associations to vernacular buildings and the local historic context. The Purist movement in art, founded by Charles-Édouard Jeanneret (better known as Le Corbusier) and Amedée Ozenfant, championed a traditional classicism while it simultaneously embraced new technologies and materials. The only book on Purism, "L'Esprit Nouveau" is a key contribution to the study of classic 20th-century modernism in painting and architecture. The book serves as the catalogue for an exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The title examines over 75 paintings by Le Corbusier, Ozenfant, and their closest colleague, Fernand Léger. At the heart of the study lies a single work: Le Corbusier's striking design of the Pavillon de l'Esprit Nouveau for the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs, at which the term "Art Deco" was coined. The architecture of Le Corbusier's pavilion, along with its interior decoration - paintings, sculpture, furniture, glassware, rugs, and other objects - offers a complete summation of Purist aesthetics. Celebrated as one of the most innovative and daring architects of the twentieth century, Bruce Goff (1904–1982) imagined a truly independent modern American architecture throughout his six-decade-long career, which began when he was just twelve years old, working as an apprentice at an architectural firm in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Distinguishing himself from the restrained modernism of the postwar period, Goff created single-family homes that were at once livable and adventurous, featuring radical spatial relationships, and designed fantastical large-scale commercial and industrial spaces. His architectural legacy often overshadows his equally experimental artistic career; this book explores the full sweep of Goff’s creativity, which flowed between media and artistic practices. It highlights 150 objects, including architectural drawings and models; abstract paintings; and photographs, ephemera, and building fragments. Inspired by a range of cultural and artistic traditions, from Native American art to Japanese joinery and the landscapes of science fiction, Goff’s work represents a unique synthesis of diverse influences.

The architecture of the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 1930s was integral to shaping 20th-century modernism. Russian architect Konstantin Melnikov (1890–1974) was a key figure of this movement, with many of his realized projects, such as his cylindrical residential house completed in 1929, becoming modernist icons. Because he refused to conform to architectural standards after Stalin's cultural turn in 1932, his works were largely forgotten for several decades. He was rehabilitated and received public recognition for his imaginative constructions only a few years prior to his death in 1974. This publication presents models of Melnikov's built and unbuilt works, created under the direction of scholar Pavel Kuznetsov by the students of the Accademia di Architettura in Mendrisio. The models are accompanied by photographs, sketches and project descriptions expanding on Melnikov's work. An essay by Kuznetsov situates the architect in his historical context, shedding light on an underappreciated figure of architectural history.

Between the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949 and the implementation of Reform and Opening Up policies in 1979, architecture played a key role in shaping China’s vision for socialist modernity. However, driven by shifting policies throughout these three decades, modern Chinese architecture has largely been perceived as stunted. Many misconceptions of this history persist: that nationalization and collectivism denied architects creative independence, that projects focused on industrial productivity over design quality, and that the promotion of a “national style” limited more modern formal choices. At once a question and a proposition, How Modern: Biographies of Architecture in China 1949–1979 reassesses New China’s architectural production. Reproducing primary sources alongside short essays and interviews with architects, archivists, historians, and residents, the book reflects on issues such as agency, innovation, collaboration, expertise, standardization, craft, and local and international impact. It challenges a monolithic history of socialist modernity by foregrounding the varied conditions under which modernism was conceived, realized, and experienced.
