Résumé:
An exploration of the art and writing of Louise Bourgeois through the lens of her relationship with Freudian psychoanalysis. From 1952 to 1985, Louise Bourgeois (1911–2010) underwent extensive Freudian analysis that probed her family history, marriage, motherhood, and artistic ambition—and generated inspiration for her artwork. Examining the impact of psychoanalysis on Bourgeois’s work, this volume offers insight into her creative process. Philip Larratt-Smith, Bourgeois’s literary archivist, provides an overview of the artist’s life and work and the ways in which the psychoanalytic process informed her artistic practice. An essay by Juliet Mitchell offers a cutting-edge feminist psychoanalyst’s viewpoint on the artist’s long and complex relationship with therapy. In addition, a short text written by Bourgeois (first published in 1991) addresses Freud’s own relationship to art and artists. Featuring excerpts from Bourgeois’s copious diaries, rarely seen notebook pages, and archival family photographs, Louise Bourgeois, "Freud’s daughter" opens exciting new avenues for understanding an innovative, influential, and groundbreaking artist whose wide-ranging work includes not only renowned large-scale sculptures but also a plethora of paintings and prints.

Résumé:
Luc Tuymans is one of today's most widely admired painters, a continuation of the great tradition of Northern European painting and an enduring influence on younger and emerging artists. As a European child of the 1950s, his relationship to painting is inevitably structured by television, cinema and by the lingering effects of World War II; more recent historical preoccupations have included the dramatic turn of world events post-9/11. Tuymans combines a muted palette with deteriorated surface effect and a singular use of cropping, close-up and sequencing--perfect devices with which to undertake his investigation of the pathological, the banal and the conspiratorial. Published in conjunction with the artist's first full-scale American survey, this is without question the authoritative publication on Tuymans. It features approximately 75 key works from 1978 to the present, and is accompanied by essays analyzing the painter's main concerns, with particular attention paid to his working process and his adaptation of source materials.

This illustrated guide to 100 of the world's most important concert halls and opera houses examines their architecture and engineering and discusses their acoustical quality as judged by conductors and music critics. The descriptions and photographs will serve as a valuable guide for today's peripatetic performers and music lovers. With technical discussions relegated to appendices, the book can be read with pleasure by anyone interested in musical performance. The photographs (specially commissioned for this book) and architectural drawings (all to the same scale) together with modern acoustical data on each of the halls provide a rich and unmatched resource on the design of halls for presenting musical performances. Together with the technical appendices, the data and drawings will serve as an invaluable reference for architects and engineers involved in the design of spaces for the performance of music. Leo Beranek is an internationally recognized authority in acoustics who has consulted on the design of dozens of important auditoriums around the World. He has received the highest honors of the Acoustical Society of America and of the Audio Engineering Society and has just been awarded the US National Medal of Science at the White House.

Résumé:
Since its inception, T.O.P. office has boosted architecture as an uncompromising social tool to persistently question the terrestrial scale and the delicate balance with mankind. Whichever way you turn it, Earth – the orb – is the undeniable alpha and omega for any future stance, action or intervention. An insight Luc Deleu & T.O.P. office have never failed to underscore – or challenge. Armed with an unsparing but humorous logic, a firm belief in the freedom of the individual, and a persistent commitment to ecology, T.O.P. office continues to hold up a mirror to society. Always unsolicited. Simply because they have to. For this publication, editors Peter Swinnen and Anne Judong were given unlimited access to the archives of T.O.P. office. The title is also the filter through which to examine the living archive. Which projects – whether conceived in the 1970s or 2000s – retain the intelligent promise of a future plan? And how can they enlighten designers, architects, urban planners, ecologists, cultural workers, administrations and policymakers of today and tomorrow? A future plan in itself.

Résumé:
As a specific form of architecture, the school is an amalgam of its function and its history. Though recognizable across cultures, the schoolhouse nevertheless retains the distinctive markings of different nations and eras. School is the first book to examine this institutional building’s modern growth on a global scale. Ian Grosvenor and Catherine Burke demonstrate how school buildings help organize and manipulate time and space for teachers and students, using methods ranging from bells to lines to lesson plans. They reveal the ways in which schools, by their actual physical situation—surrounded by swathes of green or butting up against other urban structures, in neighborhoods stratified by class or segregated by race—make clear their place in society as fragmented sites of cultural memory and creation. The authors further consider how new technologies and continuing globalization will inevitably force us to rethink our notions of school—and school buildings. In the twenty-first century, these shifts represent a radically new context for education. School will provide stimulating reading for anyone interested in this extraordinary evolution of architecture and education. Ian Grosvenor is director of learning and teaching at the School of Education, University of Birmingham. Catherine Burke is lecturer in education in the School of Education, University of Leeds.

Résumé:
This is the first critical guide to the two hundred most important modern and contemporary art sites around the world. Designed for the international art tourist as a critical reference, "Destination Art" provides an accessible chronological survey of important large-scale and public works of twentieth- and twenty-first-century art. Encompassing land and environmental works, sculpture parks, architectural follies, site-specific installations, and entire towns turned over to the display of art, this book chronicles works that have achieved near-mythical status since they were created. Among the artists included are Henri Matisse, Antoni Gaudí, Jean Tinguely, Constantin Brancusi, James Turrell, Richard Serra, Robert Smithson, and Antony Gormley. The book provides visitor information, including hours and admission fees, directions, contact details and websites, and further reading. Fifty art destinations are featured in substantial essays, with accounts of their histories and descriptions of their sites.

"Color me softly" brings together photographs by Kathleen McIntyre, whose ingenious arrangement using a color scale is revealed when looking at the Japanese-bound, closed book from the side. An expanded version of a diptych, the juxtaposition of images creates a dialogue and space between the images that opens and allows for personal interpretation. "I wish with this book to give room for contemplation and imagination." Originally from California, Kathleen McIntyre moved to Norway at an early age. The cultural transition and need to adapt to a new language led her to develop a close relationship with her camera, becoming more of an observer than a talker. "For me, seeing is a deliberate choice searching for what is not obviously present. All layers come together in my viewfinder and what you see is what I saw."

Résumé:
Recognizing that our civic responsibilities towards our environments have drastically increased, Visionary Cities ambitiously sets the agenda for the city of the future. Amid crippling bureaucracies and economic crises, present-day thinking on city design remains woefully inadequate, and this first publication in NAi's Future Cities Series announces 12 civic issues that are in need of transformation through the researches of The Why Factory, a global urban-studies thinktank operated in part by the Delft University of Technology. These issues include: “The Solitary (Our Dreams are Undermining the City)”; “The Iconic (Our Idols Have Been Compromised)”; “The Fun (We Are Having Too Much Fun)”; “The Cautious (Being Careful Is Killing Us)”; “The Poor (Slums Are Growing Bigger Than The Cities They Are Part Of”; and “The Future (Our Future Is Being Imagined Without Us).” A howl against civic impotence and the apathy of citizens in the face of incompetence and decay, Visionary Cities makes a manifesto of these and other topics to loudly demand large-scale change on a collective rather than individual level. In an afterword, Winy Maas, of the innovative Dutch architecture firm MVRDV, argues that architecture possesses a visionary dimension waiting to be applied to the cities of the future.
