Résumé:
Everyone knows what the distinctive curves and lines of Frank Gehry's buildings look like. But where do they come from? Gehry has described drawing as his way of "thinking aloud"; Gehry Draws traces that thinking through 32 major projects (both built and unbuilt) with more than 500 drawings (many of which have never before been published) and more than 400 additional illustrations -- providing a privileged view of the creative practice of a master architect. Horst Bredekamp's introduction relates Gehry's drawing methods to the concept of "disegno," as practiced by Leonardo and Durer -- not only the act of drawing and modeling but also the dynamics of creative thinking -- and shows how Gehry thinks through the curving movements of his hand on paper. Gehry himself describes for Bredekamp his method in several explanatory sketches, and Bredekamp applies this to a study of drawings made for specific Gehry commissions. Gehry Draws is produced in collaboration with Frank Gehry and his team at Gehry Partners. Project synopses and commentary by Gehry and two of his Partners and Project Designers, Edwin Chan and Craig Webb, guide us through the full range of Gehry production, from the small details of furniture design to such large-scale undertakings as the Disney Concert Hall and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. The drawings, illustrations, and text in Gehry Draws definitively place drawing at the heart of Frank Gehry's creative process.

Résumé:
Now that urban industry is often clean, green, small, and quiet it can be integrated at the city and building scale with other uses. Although little explored as of yet, we don’t yet know what this new hybrid will look like and how can it support new entrepreneurs, equitable jobs, and vital urban forms? How can hybrid models change with new technologies, sustainable manufacturing, and advanced production systems to create new open city? Can we break the planning and land-use patterns of segregated zoning by class and function and encourage mixed-use zoning that transforms new building and zoning codes and this the mix in the city? These questions and more are addressed in Hybrid Factory / Hybrid City, through a collection of essays by participants in the eponymous symposium organized by Nina Rappaport at the Future Urban Legacy Lab of the Politecnico di Torino. Divided into two sections, the essays describes projects and research by architects and urbanists regarding the aura of industry and its smells, its place in relationship to the body, building structures, logistics centers, reused factory buildings, and their current and future potential for mixed-use. Social and economic equity can be integrated through light manufacturing jobs, community uses, and affordable housing.

Résumé:
Accompanying the large-scale traveling exhibition "Ellsworth Kelly at 100", this volume celebrates the groundbreaking career of the beloved American abstractionist. This publication highlights key aspects of his multifaceted art?from his lifelong drawing practice through his later explorations of layered canvas panels. Kelly frequently revisited shapes and motifs observed throughout his career, exploring form, color, line and space through painting, sculpture, collage, drawing and photography. The fully illustrated publication highlights works from major public and private collections alongside key works from Glenstone's collection, including seminal early pieces such as "Painting for a White Wall" (1952) and "Painting in Three Panels" (1956), as well as examples from the iconic Chatham and Spectrum series. Also featured is "Yellow Curve" (1990), a monumental floor painting installation that spans nearly 1,000 square feet, on view for the first time in more than 30 years since it was conceived for an exhibition at Portikus am Main in Frankfurt. Essays by Jean-Pierre Criqui, Alex Da Corte, Suzanne Hudson, Corey Keller and others explore and expand upon Kelly’s canon. With three gatefolds and a tip-on cover image, the book also includes unpublished archival materials from the artist’s studio and the Glenstone archives.

Résumé:
Designers included in the first edition have continued to exercise their skills on new projects that are progressions from their former work. The nature of this book is that the case studies are primarily projects that have been taken to completion, however, it is of interest that several of the designers included here are currently involved in much more ambitious projects. The Millennium Dome is also discussed in the introduction as an example of large scale portable architecture and a high profile building in the UK. The overriding purpose of this book is to show that portable buildings are eminently feasible, capable of a wide range of roles and economic to build and operate. They can also be subversive as well as sensitive, amusing as well as appropriate, energetic as well as economic. This second edition of 'Portable Architecture' includes work by two new design teams and seven new case studies to help further define the relevant characteristics of this important strand of contemporary building design. The projects completed by the two new designers introduced in this edition have been included for very difference reasons. Architects Branson Coates designed Powerhouse::UK, a temporary British products design exhibition sponsored by the UK Department of Trade and Industry represents an establishment based endorsement of a portable building. Festo KG's 'Airtecture' hall uses inflatable technology and fundamentally could not be more different, it was not reported in the main stream press yet it won many industrial design awards.

Résumé:
When Urbanization Comes To Ground is a collaborative research project between the Brooklyn-based architecture studio, CAZA, and think tank, SURBA, an urban research collective spearheaded by Carlos Arnaiz and Peter Rowe. Drawing upon case studies including projects in China, Colombia, and the Philippines, this book works across place, time, and culture to offer an allegorical journey into urbanization at large. When ''Urbanization comes to ground'' is a loosely congregated collection of essays that reflect an aggregation of encounters with urban circumstances – physical and immaterial, and structural and affective. From Robots, Utilidors, and a Brave New World to A Third Way Towards Metropolitanism and Tagging Thingness and Scale, this publication questions the role of architecture and its related disciplines in the wake of the master plan. It searches for a field guide to everyday urban life by offering palpable views into the network of relations that characterize this evolving social ecosystem. Through their collective global research projects CAZA and SURBA frame, abstract, poeticize, and render the city as a historical process, a future destination, a production cycle, and a layered landscape of overlapping phenomena.

Résumé:
The work of Alison Brooks Architects fuses an endlessly inventive architectural imagination with profound sensitivity to the diverse cultural and natural histories that form each project’s provenance. This ethos underpins the extraordinary array of nuanced and joyful portfolio of works illustrated in this book, collectively described by Brooks as ‘experimental archetypes’. This 386-page monograph charts eighteen built works completed in the past 20 years, extensively documented with descriptive texts, photographs, drawings and emblematic construction details that illuminate each project’s tectonic and conceptual intent. The private houses in this book define Brooks’ early career and continue to be a test bed for experimentation. They illuminate her ability to conjure deeply human architectures of plasticity and informality. Organic geometries and expressive roof forms loosen cartesian boundaries to offer indeterminate spaces: these simultaneously act as a canvas for daily life, workplaces, or private art collections. As the practice’s work has grown in scale, their urban housing schemes have been motivated by Brooks’ foundational belief that the architect’s duty to the city, and society, is to provide beautiful, sustainable and accessible housing for all as a framework for individual and community well-being. This book reveals residential projects characterised by spatial generosity and a uniquely sculptural approach to form and material.

Résumé:
For five decades, photographer Gianfranco Gorgoni (1941-2019) built his reputation as the premier documentarian of Land Art in the US and beyond. After leaving Italy, Gorgoni started making portraits of the major artists of the New York scene, including Michael Heizer, Robert Smithson, Nancy Holt, Walter De Maria, Carl Andre, and Richard Serra. It was not long before he was traveling with Heizer, Smithson, and De Maria to the American West in the late 1960s to plot the works that would famously break art practice out of the confines of the gallery world. In Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah, these artists embarked on major Land Art installations that would redefine contemporary art practice of the era. In many cases, Gorgoni was the only photographer on the ground to document their projects, and his images often serve as the definitive photographic record of the planning and creation of these groundbreaking works. Published to coincide with the first major exhibition of Gorgoni's photographic Land Art images at the Nevada Museum of Art, featuring over fifty of his large-scale photographs, "Gianfranco Gorgoni: Land Art Photographs" includes an introduction by Ann M. Wolfe, Andrea and John C. Deane Family senior curator and deputy director at the Nevada Museum of Art, an essay by the late art historian and critic Germano Celant, whose contribution here is among the last he wrote before his death in 2020, and William L. Fox, the Peter E. Pool Director of the Center for Art + Environment.

Résumé:
"Wang Shu Amateur Architecture Studio" is the first major book on the recent work of architect Wang Shu, Pritzker Price winner in 2012, and his wife Lu Wenyu. Together they have run Amateur Architecture Studio, based in Hangzhou, China, for nearly 20 years. At a time when China’s explosive urbanization is making inroads into rural areas and leaving the marks of cheap concrete construction everywhere, Amateur Architecture Studio is keen to work against this tendency by reusing materials from the buildings that Chinese authorities are systematically tearing down. Amateur Architecture Studio’s working ways successfully represent socially conscious and sustainable new architecture. Wang Shu’s architecture reveals a thoughtful attitude toward both design and implementation, as well as the ability to react flexibly to the surroundings and history of a particular site. At heart, it comes down to preserving Chinese building customs and local awareness of material in a nation that is fast losing its building culture. The studio’s projects inhabit a fascinating field between allusions to traditional Chinese culture and large-scale modern architecture. This book is published on the occasion of the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art exhibition in 2017 of Wang Shu and Amateur Architecture Studio’s work. Featuring a wealth of images by architecture photographer Iwan Baan this is a detailed and reflective guide to Amateur Architecture Studio’s projects, philosophy and methodology

I sometimes stare at the plastic bag tree visible from my apartment window and marvel that both it and I are equally alive and that there’s no sliding scale of life. You’re either alive, or you’re not. Or you’re dead or you’re not.'' Thirty years after Douglas Coupland broke the fiction mould and defined a generation with ''Generation X,'' he is back with ''Binge,'' 60 stories laced with his observational profundity about the way we live and his existential worry about how we should be living: the very things that have made him such an influential and bestselling writer. Not to mention that he can also be really funny. Here the narrators vary from story to story as Doug catches what he calls “the voice of the people,” inspired by the way we write about ourselves and our experiences in online forums. The characters, of course, are Doug’s own: crackpots, cranks and sweetie-pies, dad dancers and perpetrators of carbecues. People in the grip of unconscionable urges; lonely people; dying people; silly people. If you love Doug’s fiction, this collection is like rain on the desert.

Résumé:
Impregnated with “culture” in the broadest sense, the works of Peter Eisenman reflect many years of important study on the meaning and sense of design. Architecture understood as history, as philosophy, as art, as mathematics, as literature, architecture understood – as it should be that is – as a strict discipline that aims to recover its operational fields, defining with precision its limits and the potential for a profession that must constantly face destabilising visual and technological systems. Within history and yet outside it so that it can continue, within tradition yet outside of Tradition in order to avoid becoming sterile, the architecture of Peter Eisenman does not aim to console with the simple suggestion of a difficult-to-define aesthetic or the illusion of an evanescent technique. The unpredictability of his work anchors design to individuation and the clarification of its objectives by focussing on the value of the sign understood as a fundamental conceptual expression and not as simple formal distortion. The validity of this formidable theoretical system intended to return a renewed and personal linguistic system to fields of architecture, is confirmed by examining the continued expansion of the territorial system, as evidenced by projects on a territorial scale such as the Memorial of Berlin or the Cultural Centre of Galizia, the most recent projects which demonstrate the vitality of a design system that is constantly renewing itself.
