Résumé:
How have art museums changed in the past century? Where are they headed in the future? Charles Saumarez Smith is uniquely qualified to answer these questions, having been at the helm of three major institutions over the course of his distinguished career. For "The art museum in modern times," Saumarez Smith has undertaken an odyssey, visiting art museums across the globe and examining how the experience of art is shaped by the buildings that house it. His story starts with the Museum of Modern Art in New York, one of the first museums to focus squarely on the art of the present rather than the past. When it opened in 1939, MoMA’s boldly modernist building represented a stark riposte to the neoclassicism of most earlier art museums. From there, Saumarez Smith investigates dozens of other museums, including the Tate Modern in London, the Getty Center in Los Angeles, the West Bund Museum in Shanghai, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. He explores our shifting reasons for visiting museums, changes to the way exhibits are organized and displayed, and the spectacular new architectural landmarks that have become destinations in their own right.

Résumé:
With three billion more humans projected to be living in cities by 2050, all design is increasingly urban design. And with as much data now produced every day as was produced in all of human history to the year 2007, all architecture is increasingly information architecture. Praised in the NewYork Times for its "intelligent enquiry and actionable theorizing," Local Code is a collection of data-driven tools and design prototypes for understanding and transforming the physical, social, and ecological resilience of cities.'the book's data-driven layout arranges drawings of 3,659 digitally-tailored interventions for vacant public land in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York City, and Venice, Italy. Between these illustrated case studies, critical essays present surprising and essential links between such designs and the seminal work of urbanist Jane Jacobs, artist Gordon Matta-Clark, and digital mapping pioneer Howard Fisher, along with the developing science of urban nature and complexity. In text and image, Local Code presents'a digitally prolific, open-ended approach to urban resilience and social and environmental justice; At once analytic and visionary, it pioneers a new field of enquiry and action at the meeting of big data and the expanding city.

Résumé:
The theme of the first Rotterdam International Architecture Biennial was mobility--as it relates to the city and the landscape, and the design culture that comes with it. Held between May and July 2003, the biennial brought together numerous universities, architects, urbanists, spatial planners and designers to swap experiences and discuss new strategies for giving shape to (car) mobility. This unique book shows the results of this international research in its various forms: statistics, photography, text, visual collage and design proposals. These together give a tangible and insightful look at the mobile cultures found in a wide range of cities and countries, from Mexico City, Hong Kong and Guangzhou, to Djakarta, Budapest, the Ruhr Valley, Beirut, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Peking and Holland. The aim of the publication is twofold. On the one hand, to understand infrastructures and motorway culture by studying their different cultural and geographical contexts. On the other, to draw up an agenda for the future, one that establishes the role to be played by various design disciplines. This research and publication endeavor is the fruit of a collaboration between the universities of Wuppertal, Aachen, Berlin, California, Monterrey (Mexico), Tokyo, Hong Kong, Peking, Beirut, Budapest, Bandung and Delft.

Résumé:
Archibald Quincy Jones (1913–79) was a Los Angeles-based architect and educator who shared the Case Study goal of reinventing the house as a way of redefining the way people lived in post-war America. A pioneer in ‘greenbelt’ planning and ‘green’ design, Jones raised the level of the tract house in California from the simple stucco box to a structure of beauty and logic surrounded by gardens and integrated into the landscape. He introduced new materials and also a new way of living within the built environment, and his work bridged the gap between custom-built and developer-built homes. The exquisite detailing and siting of Jones’s houses, churches, civic and university buildings make them quintessential embodiments of mid-century American architecture. This is the first book published on Jones. It documents his full career, from his post-war planning projects to his long association with Palo Alto building magnate Joseph Eichler. The book is comprised of two parts: a substantial introductory essay tracing Jones’s life and career, with a summary of key projects and his contributions to planning; and a catalogue of sixty of Jones’s projects illustrated with high-quality black-and-white period photographs, and plans and renderings by Jones.

Résumé:
"Central European Avant-Gardes" presents the first interpretive overview of the complex webs of interaction among the artists and intellectuals of early twentieth-century Central Europe. The key stylistic transformation of the period was from Expressionism to Constructivism, as artists and writers, against a volatile background of war and revolution, saw the opportunity literally to construct a new world through their work. The borders between the visual arts, photography, film, architecture, poetry, and typography were obliterated, as artists sought to transcend the forces of traditionalism to forge an elemental visual language that would overcome national and linguistic boundaries. Yet at the same time that these artists advocated pluralism and unity, their work engaged issues such as nationalism and tradition that still resonate in artistic circles today. The book, which accompanies a major exhibition organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and curated by Timothy Benson, assisted by Monika Krol, is arranged around events and situations rather than by linear, art historical categories. It features hundreds of color plates and reproductions of documents; discussions of movements from Artificialism to Zenitism; essays on figures, publications, and exhibitions; and shorter "city views" of Belgrade, Berlin, Bucharest, Budapest, Cracow, Dessau, Ljubljana, £ódz, Poznañ, Prague, Vienna, Warsaw, Weimar, and Zagreb.

Résumé:
The teachings of Mies van der Rohe and his respect for the effects of space and material has had a great influence on the American architect and artist Gene Summers. Thanks to the technology of the day and Summers’ own creative talents, he was able to help transform Mies’ visions into built structures. For 16 years Gene Summers was a close colleague of Mies, heading his office and working with him on many projects including the Seagram Building in New York, Bacardi’s office buildings in Cuba and Mexico, and Krupps’ offices in Essen. Also working independently, Summers created projects for C.F Murphy Associates, such as the McCormick Convention Centre and the Malcolm X College in Chicago. Later with Ridgway Limited, he was responsible for the the acclaimed restoration of the Biltmore Hotels in Los Angeles. Familiar with bronze as a building material, Summers used his knowledge to design elegant furniture and household objects before devoting himself entirely to producing artworks using this medium. This volume is the first presentation of Gene Summers’ architectural and artistic work, surveying the many areas in which he was active. Phyllis Lambert, founder of the Canadian Centre for Architecture president of the International Confederation of Architectural Museums, provides an enlightening introduction to his work.

Résumé:
Now anybody can raid Chloe Sevigny's wardrobe! Re-inventing the looks of 1989 for 2008, Sevigny has designed her first collection for the discerning New York/Los Angeles boutique Opening Ceremony. It's a concise and carefully assembled collection, comprised of 40 pieces, and this volume presents each of them as photographed by Mark Borthwick, who first shot Sevigny for Purple magazine 10 years ago. The collection was inspired by the teen fashions of the late 80s and early 90s in Connecticut and New York, where Sevigny grew up, and further inflected by the looks of "women who are outrageous yet effortless--Liz Goldwyn, Cecilia Dean, Angelica Houston, Marlene Dietrich, Debbie Harry, Poison Ivy, Slim Keith, Patti Smith." In Sevigny's vision, calico and Liberty prints might be matched with gingham check trousers--each piece evokes a look but can be combined to many ends. In this mix-and-match volume, in which each page is split into two separately flippable sections, Sevigny models each ensemble with a minimum of fuss, allowing the clothes to speak for themselves. Borthwick's ethereal photographs are complemented with drawings by Marika Thunder, Rita Ackerman, Lizzie Bougatsos, Benjamin Cho, Dan Colen, Matt Damhave, Amy Gartrel, Lily Ludlow and Spencer Sweeney.

Résumé:
Every driver in North America shares one miserable, soul-sucking universal experience—being stuck in traffic. But things weren’t always like this. Why is it that the mass transit systems of most cities in the United States and Canada are now utterly inadequate? ''The lost subways of North America'' offers a new way to consider this eternal question, with a strikingly visual—and fun—journey through past, present, and unbuilt urban transit. Using meticulous archival research, cartographer and artist Jake Berman has successfully plotted maps of old train networks covering twenty-three North American metropolises, ranging from New York City’s Civil War–era plan for a steam-powered subway under Fifth Avenue to the ultramodern automated Vancouver SkyTrain and the thousand-mile electric railway system of pre–World War II Los Angeles. He takes us through colorful maps of old, often forgotten streetcar lines, lost ideas for never-built transit, and modern rail systems—drawing us into the captivating transit histories of US and Canadian cities. Berman combines vintage styling with modern printing technology to create a sweeping visual history of North American public transit and urban development. With more than one hundred original maps, accompanied by essays on each city’s urban development, this book presents a fascinating look at North American rapid transit systems.

Résumé:
The author, Gerhard Mack, explores the architecture of each individual museum in detail, and highlights current tendencies in museum building in his seminal essay "Time Rediscovered". This is complemented by an introduction by Harald Szeemann, who as curator of the Kunsthaus in Zürich, was appointed director for Fine Arts at the Biennale in Venice this year. The museums examined in this book are Kunsthaus in Bregenz, the Museum of the Beyeler Fondation near Basel, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the Getty Center in Los Angeles and the Moderna und Arkitektur Museet in Stockholm all opening within a year of one another. The Tate Gallery of Modern Art which is being built by Herzog & de Meuron in a former power station on the Thames in London is to be completed in May 1999. Conversations with the architects Frank O. Gehry, Jacques Herzog, Richard Meier, Rafael Moneo, Jean Nouvel, Renzo Piano and Peter Zumthor reveal the wide spectrum of design concerns in contemporary museum design and building. In the Pavilion at the Beyeler Fondation, the interaction of nature, light and the presentation of art is an impressive experience. Jean Nouvel perceives the museum as a public place, bringing the various areas of 'urban chaos' into contact with each other. A total of eight projects are presented.
