This catalogue to the CCA's exhibition presents four of the most representative and best documented of the artificial excavation projects: an urban design scheme for Cannaregio West in Venice (1978); a housing project near Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin (1980-1981, partially realized 1982-1986); a design for the University Art Museum at California State University, Long Beach (1986); and Chora L Works (1985-1986), a garden for the Parc de La Villette in Paris designed in collaboration with Jacques Derrida. Each project is presented through the architect's drawings and models, over 200 images in all, more than 150 of them in colour, most from the collections of the Canadian Centre for Architecture. Each project sequence begins with a theoretical text by Eisenman, then goes on to a project history describing the site and explaining Eisenman's design strategy. The unprecedented publication of complete series of conceptual drawings not only illustrates Eisenman's design process in detail, but also traces the transformation, through drawing and model making, of his architectural discourse. With essays by Alan Balfour, Yve-Alain Bois, Jean-François Bédard, Jean-Louis Cohen, Kurt W. Forster, K. Michael Hays, Arata Isozaki, and Fredric Jameson.

Featuring over 150 kiosks – from Ljubljana to Warsaw, and from Belgrade to Berlin – this photobook provides previously unseen documentation of the remaining modernist booths that witnessed the socio-political transformation of Central and Eastern Europe at the end of the 20th century. While some remain active or have undergone refurbishment, others have been abandoned or have slowly faded from the urban landscape. The photographs in this unique collection were taken over the last decade by Zupagrafika’s founders, David Navarro and Martyna Sobecka. The book includes a foreword by urban explorer Maciej Czarnecki and an introduction by architectural historian Anna Cymer, offering invaluable insights into the history of these mobile structures.

Edward Burtynsky’s imagery explores the intricate link between industry and nature, combining the raw elements of mining, quarrying, shipping, oil production, and recycling into eloquent, highly expressive visions that find beauty and humanity in the most unlikely places. These images are metaphors for the dilemma of our modern existence: we are drawn by desire-the desire to live well and in comfort-yet we all know that the world is suffering to meet those demands. Our dependence on nature to provide the materials for our consumption and our concern for the health of our planet sets us into uneasy contradiction and feeds the dialogue in Burtynsky’s images between attraction and repulsion, seduction and fear. Burtysnky’s latest body of work gives visual form to the industrial and urban transformation of China, a place where industrial forces are gathering on a scale that the world has never experienced before. By its very definition, the touristic landscape is a construct in which cultural and functional aspects have a role. As far back as the 18th century, the experience of a touristic landscape was become a physical one; an irreversible transformation of the landscape has been the result. This edition of "OASE" focuses on architecture's contribution to the structuring of mass tourism in the context of landscape, on how architecture frames the landscape and regiments the flow of tourists. The relationship between architecture and tourism has been the subject of ample research from the urban point of view, resulting in various theories about the "tourist gaze." Themes like identity and city branding are familiar to us all these days, but the relationship between architecture and the touristic landscape has thus far received much less consideration. FRS Yorke (1906–62) was an architect who completely followed that trajectory. His book "The modern house" (1934) placed his detailed knowledge of European architecture as an introduction to modern architecture for generations of architects, and provided inspiration for his own designs. But it was only after World War II, and the social and political change which came in its wake, that Yorke was able to turn his reputation as a modernist into commercial success. As his pre-War contemporaries gave up architecture or moved abroad, his practice – Yorke, Rosenberg and Mardall – drew on his experience of working on large, state-funded construction projects during the War, and participated in the transformation of Britain’s social and physical fabric with its new housing, hospitals, schools, universities and airports. This book concludes with a memoir by David Allford, who worked with Yorke and Yorke, Rosenberg and Mardall from 1952 until 1989.
