This volume documents a new project by the visionary architect and theorist. Commissioned by the Institute of Contemporary Art Philadelphia, Tyng has created an installation-scale model that realizes the ambition of all of her work: to inhabit geometry. Exploring her life-long fascination with the Platonic solids, the book also features related models and documentation of past projects, including Tyng and Kahn's never-built design for City Tower in Philadelphia (1952-1956).

They transmuted the difficulties of capitalism into a repertory of startling images that revealed the disturbing realities of consumer society, even in those places still resistant to the penetration of modern architecture, such as Superstudio and Archizoom’s Florence. Their model, though exhausted in the space of experimentation, went on to inspire a generation of architects, from the High Tech movement to Rem Koolhaas.. In the light of these examples, how to define a unified 'dystopian' method of design, i.e. a common ground for an architecture that, by its very nature, seems to resist systematization? Are the most recognizable architectural expressions of this theoretical framework — characterized by brazen displays of technology and structures of overwhelming scale — merely isolated cases, albeit of particular iconic power? Or do they belong to a wider landscape of antirational architectural projects? And to what extent are these disturbing expressions premised on the utopian tradition or, better yet, the conceptual model of 'negative thought'? The goal of this book is to respond to such questions, thus initiating an open dialogue about the legitimacy of this critical category.

He experimented with different media in search of a solution, producing works in ceramic, concrete, and eventually plastic resin. The large size and relief surface of his 1967 Mur Bleu (Blue Wall) catapulted his painting into the third dimension in a big way. Many commissions followed, and today Dubuffet's massive architectural forms grace several cities across the globe. The artist did not intend for these structures to be mere supports for his paintings; he meant for them to give his work architectural space. His efforts in this area earned him the medal of the American Institute of Architects in 1982. Leiter’s studio in New York’s East Village, where he lived from 1952 until his death in 2013, is now home to the Saul Leiter Foundation, which is undertaking a full-scale survey and organization of Leiter’s more than eighty thousand images with the aim of compiling his complete archive. The author of this publication visited Brasilia's vast building sites for the first time in 1958. He returned many times over the years, documenting with his camera growth and further development of this built Utopia. Besides documenting the buildings in various stages of completion, Burri took portraits of Niemeyer and his workers and photographed Brasilia's street scenes and people and aerial views of the city's first slums. His images capture the strong sense of a new era and a vibrant atmosphere of hard work and strain; they reflect the huge dimensions of the landscape and the great scale of this project and its ambition to design and build a new capital. This book presents a large selection from hundreds of colour and black-and-white photographs, the majority of them published in this book for the first time.

The commons as a contested political idea has been continually articulated and reproduced in many disciplines and in relation to specific historical and geographical contexts. Since the 1960s, the concept of commons has started to play an increasingly important role in the field of urban studies. While commons are usually perceived as the material spaces of the city such as streets, parks, public spaces, etc., they are also perceived as the immaterial public realm- including subaltern and mainstream culture, knowledge, language, and modes of sociality. As the commoning process continuously involves the substance of urban spaces, be it physical or virtual, the concept of commons has actively contributed to reshaping spatial imaginaries such as urban islands, archipelagos, and thresholds. This issue of 'New Geographies' proposes the concept of commons as a mode of thinking that challenges assumptions in the design disciplines such as public and private spaces, local and regional geographies, and capital and state interventions. It expands the production of space as the commons into a planetary territory all the way from the intimate and subjective scale of the body to the connected material and immaterial spaces. In doing so, NG 12 aims to foreground the significance of political thinking in the process of space production, and invites to imagine alternative social relations and modes of urbanization.

The commons as a contested political idea has been continually articulated and reproduced in many disciplines and in relation to specific historical and geographical contexts. Since the 1960s, the concept of commons has started to play an increasingly important role in the field of urban studies. While commons are usually perceived as the material spaces of the city such as streets, parks, public spaces, etc., they are also perceived as the immaterial public realm- including subaltern and mainstream culture, knowledge, language, and modes of sociality. As the commoning process continuously involves the substance of urban spaces, be it physical or virtual, the concept of commons has actively contributed to reshaping spatial imaginaries such as urban islands, archipelagos, and thresholds. This issue of 'New Geographies' proposes the concept of commons as a mode of thinking that challenges assumptions in the design disciplines such as public and private spaces, local and regional geographies, and capital and state interventions. It expands the production of space as the commons into a planetary territory all the way from the intimate and subjective scale of the body to the connected material and immaterial spaces. In doing so, NG 12 aims to foreground the significance of political thinking in the process of space production, and invites to imagine alternative social relations and modes of urbanization.

Celebrated as one of the most innovative and daring architects of the twentieth century, Bruce Goff (1904–1982) imagined a truly independent modern American architecture throughout his six-decade-long career, which began when he was just twelve years old, working as an apprentice at an architectural firm in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Distinguishing himself from the restrained modernism of the postwar period, Goff created single-family homes that were at once livable and adventurous, featuring radical spatial relationships, and designed fantastical large-scale commercial and industrial spaces. His architectural legacy often overshadows his equally experimental artistic career; this book explores the full sweep of Goff’s creativity, which flowed between media and artistic practices. It highlights 150 objects, including architectural drawings and models; abstract paintings; and photographs, ephemera, and building fragments. Inspired by a range of cultural and artistic traditions, from Native American art to Japanese joinery and the landscapes of science fiction, Goff’s work represents a unique synthesis of diverse influences.
