Résumé:
In ''¡Presente!: the politics of presence'' Diana Taylor asks what it means to be physically and politically present in situations where it seems that nothing can be done. As much an act, a word, an attitude, a theoretical intervention, and a performance pedagogy, Taylor maps ''¡Presente!'' at work in scenarios ranging from conquest, through colonial enactments and resistance movements, to present moments of capitalist extractivism and forced migration in the Americas. ''¡Presente!''—present among, with, and to; a walking and talking with others; an ontological and epistemic reflection on presence and subjectivity as participatory and relational, founded on mutual recognition—requires rethinking and unlearning in ways that challenge colonial epistemologies. Showing how knowledge is not something to be harvested but a process of being, knowing, and acting with others, Taylor models a way for scholarship to be present in political struggles.

Résumé:
In recent years, the rise of research-creation--a scholarly activity that considers art practices as research methods in their own right--has emerged from the organic convergences of the arts and interdisciplinary humanities, and it has been fostered by universities wishing to enhance their public profiles. In this publication, Natalie Loveless draws on diverse perspectives--from feminist science studies to psychoanalytic theory, as well as her own experience advising undergraduate and graduate students--to argue for research-creation as both a means to produce innovative scholarship and a way to transform pedagogy and research within the contemporary neoliberal university. Championing experimental, artistically driven methods of teaching, researching, and publication, research-creation works to render daily life in the academy more pedagogically, politically, and affectively sustainable, as well as more responsive to issues of social and ecological justice.

Résumé:
This book is the first extended study of the life and work of German-born Venezuelan artist Gertrude Goldschmidt (1912–94), known as Gego. In locating the artist’s contribution to postwar art and her important place in the global conversations around modernity, Mónica Amor explores her intermedial practice as a model of cultural complexity at the ''edge of modernity.'' In situating Gego’s work alongside other local archives and against her European education and global reception, Amor offers a monographic model that complicates traditional approaches to history. She investigates the full range of Gego’s work, including her furniture workshop, her teaching at schools of architecture and design, her seminal reticuláreas, and her lesser-known prints. Through rigorous archival research, formal analysis, theoretical relevance, and deep exploration of historical context, this essential book unpacks Gego’s radical recasting of the modern sculptural project through her engagement with architecture, craft, and design pedagogy.

Résumé:
Assignments can give instructions, describe an exercise, present a problem, set out rules, propose a game, stimulate a process, or simply throw out questions. "Taking a line for a walk" brings attention to something that is often neglected: the assignment as a pedagogical element and verbal artefact of design education. This book is a compendium of 224 assignments, edited by Nina Paim and coedited by Emilia Bergmark. A reference book for educators, researchers, and students alike, it includes both contemporary and historical examples and offers a space for different lines of design pedagogy to converge and converse. An accompanying essay by Corinne Gisel takes a closer look at the various forms assignments can take and the educational contexts they exist within. Taking a Line for a Walk derived from an exhibition of the same name at the International Biennial of Graphic Design Brno 2014.

Résumé:
Modeling History revisits the material legacy of Kenneth Frampton's course Studies in Tectonic Culture, a collection of models familiar to anyone who has passed through Avery Hall. It looks back in order to project forward, and asks how the construction of architectural history through the making of models might generate new histories, practices, and ways of seeing. Produced on the occasion of the exhibition 'Stagecraft: Models and Photos' at Columbia University's Arthur RossArchitecture Gallery, Modeling History moves between modes of representation, past and present, to explore Frampton's theory and pedagogy concerning tectonics. The sixteen photographs enclosed in this book by photographer James Ewing reveal the possibilities of Frampton's radical approach today. Each image not only reengages with a model built during Frampton's seminar, but, by playing with the potentials of photography, also aspires to project similar material, tectonic, and poetic realities. Printed in a limited edition of 250 copies.

Résumé:
"Event-Cities 5" is the fifth and final volume in the MIT Press series documenting recent built and unbuilt projects by renowned architect Bernard Tschumi. This volume expands on the theoretical preoccupations that have shaped Tschumi's work in practice and pedagogy. In this volume, Tschumi embarks on what he calls a “poetics” that addresses both the rational elaboration of work and the irrational eruption of inexplicable elements in architectural projects. How do chance, intuition, and analogy, among other elements, intersect with the logical play of concept, context, and program to generate innovative and informed design? Highlights of this volume include circular building projects, works with suspended gardens and floating rectangular masses, superposed structures created via surrealist tactics, an immense educational research complex in France that hovers between building and urban design, a museum in China made from intersecting conic shapes, and a project for a cultural center in Italy that is structured as an investigation into courtyards and facades.

Résumé:
What role does drawing play in architectural education? How is drawing used as an instrument for communication, investigation, and representation in architecture and the construction industry? This book assembles contributions to the 2021 edition of the Lucerne Talks, the bi-annual Symposium on Pedagogy in Architecture at the Lucerne School of Engineering and Architecture. ''Drawing in architecture education and research'' offers a closer look at the importance of drawing culture in the curricula of Swiss schools of architecture and in the practice of architecture firms. Conceived as a compendium and reference book for students, teachers, and practitioners alike, this book explores the potential of drawing as a universal tool for communication and understanding among different societies, language groups, and professional communities. It considers drawing in its dual function as an object and a method for theory and practice in architecture and features strategies for a future transdisciplinary language of drawing that enables narrations and representations of new spatial concepts.

Résumé:
The creative imagination is not solely based on the intuitive capacities of individuals. One of the tasks of design education is to help provide the tools, techniques, and methods that enhance constructed imagination. At the same time, the modes and practices of design need to confront the challenges of our contemporary societies. The commitment to societal engagement through design excellence is at the core of the pedagogy at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. This volume celebrating the first seventy-five years of the GSD presents episodes in a rich history along with selected looks at current and future lines of teaching and research; these views reveal the constant oscillation between the pragmatic realities and the imagined yet never realized ideal that lies at the heart of design. The aspirations of the famous architecture school are demonstrated through a series of ideas, projects, practices–INSTIGATIONS–that reflect the mission for the GSD to reimagine and construct better futures.
