In this publication famous historical gardens from all over Europe are analysed, and these graphic analyses allow us to see into the mind of the designers. By highlighting the design processes, they also function as models for future landscape projects. More than 30 renowned gardens have been examined and documented with a wealth of illustrations. Amongst the parks presented are Palladio’s Villa Emo, the perfect order of the Baroque garden Vaux-le-Vicomte near Paris or the pastoral yet mysterious park of Blenheim Palace near Oxford.

Among the sketches and models is a series of three wooden models attributed to the Swiss architects Hans Ulrich and Johannes Grubenmann. Bridge-building had always fascinated Soane. As a student, he had even won a gold medal for his design of a wooden bridge. During his long professional career, Soane often planned bridges and was consulted about their construction. On his way home from the "grand tour" of Italy, he took a detour through Switzerland to see some bridges built by the Grubenmann brothers. The bridges at Wettingen, Reichenau and Schaffhausen left a lasting impression on the young architect. Years later, in his lectures to the Royal Academy, he would praise their "sublime simplicity".

The Pavilion, designed by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), is an unzipped wall that is transformed from straight line to three-dimensional space, creating a dramatic structure that by day houses a café and by night becomes a space for the Serpentine’s Park Nights performance program. Kunlé Adeyemi’s Summer House is an inverse replica of Queen Caroline’s Temple—a tribute to its robust form, space and material, recomposed into a new sculptural object. Barkow Leibinger were inspired by another, now extinct, 18th-century pavilion also designed by William Kent, which rotated and offered 360-degree views of the Park. Yona Friedman’s Summer House takes the form of a modular structure that can be assembled and disassembled. Asif Khan’s design is inspired by the fact that Queen Caroline’s Temple was positioned in a way that would allow it to catch the sunlight from the Serpentine lake.
