The authors chronicle efforts of progressive social movements that worked throughout the twentieth century to create a more livable, just, and democratic Los Angeles. These movements-what the authors call Progressive L.A.-have produced a new kind of labor movement, community-oriented environmentalism, and multi-ethnic coalition politics. This book shows how reformers have fought to transform a city characterized by huge economic disparities, concrete-encased rivers, and an endless landscape of subdivisions, freeways, and malls into a progressive model for regions around the country. "The next Los Angeles" includes a decade-by-decade historical snapshot of the city's progressive social movements and an in-depth exploration of key trends that are remaking L.A. at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Plus que sous la forme d'une recherche d'autonomie, il faut donc concevoir la modernité en des termes d'inquiétude et d'espoir. L'architecture moderne, phénomène central de la modernité, vise à réformer le monde vécu afin de rendre possible une existence nouvelle, un "esprit nouveau". Les textes et les oeuvres de Le Corbusier expriment une telle volonté de briser les habitudes anciennes par la transformation de l'espace architectural et par la création d'une poésie nouvelle. The uncertain state of Europe is the primary concern of Multiplicity : a multidisciplinary group of Europeans architects, photographers, urban developers and artists who met to explore and develop a series of studies focusing on contemporary European cities and their ongoing changes. The group uses on-site investigations, documented with beautiful photographs by Francesco Jodice and Gabriele Basilico, to illustrate the radical and dramatic changes occurring on European land and in its cities. Traditional spaces are slowly, yet forcefully, transforming due to the constant economic, political, and social upheavals and alterations. With an introduction by prominent political and intellectual figures such as Etienne Balibar, Rem Koolhas and Jeremy Rifkin, this volume analyses 24 cases of urban transformation. The cases cover geographical locations from Paris to Pristina, Helsinki to Bucharest, and show the extraordinary riches a modern city can offer while, at the same time, highlighting the abnormal spaces created by the existence of a so-called secondary world. Fleeting moments and encounters often act as a base for his critical photographic practice. The central protagonists in his most recent project, titled Stadt für Alle (transl. City for All), are countless cranes, excavators, and construction signs. They are the tools that power the remaking of any city’s urban fabric – here Berlin mostly sets the example. Building pits constitute the foundation for farewells and new beginnings. Advertising banners for luxury developments vie against protest placards hanging limply on the façades of older buildings. The artist has compiled a pictorial atlas that prompts reflections on the transformation of the city and thereby gives form to the advancing gentrification, the constant feeling of threat and the increasing loss of inner-city street culture. Hutchinson’s writing complements the deft visual analysis of these processes: "The way you look at me, smiling while I’m losing my vision" is one such observation that, in conjunction with his images, opens up a space for interpretation and a probing inquiry into what urban life will mean in the future.

Recently, as she skied on this path against the backdrop of uncertainty, environmental devastation, rising authoritarianism and ongoing social injustice, her mind turned to the water in the creek and an elemental What might it mean to truly listen to water? To know water? To exist with and alongside water? So began a quest to understand her people's historical, cultural, and ongoing interactions with water in all its forms (ice, snow, rain, perspiration, breath). Pulling together these threads, Leanne began to see how a "Theory of Water" might suggest a radical rethinking of relationships between beings and forces in the world today. The German pavilion at the 9th Venice Architecture Biennale offers an overview of more than 35 contemporary architectural projects in Germany which have manifested in peripheral urban areas, suburban spaces, and de-industrialized zones. The projects reveal the transformation and reactivation of banal everyday architecture--business parks, switching stations, water purification plants, and strictly coded and conventional housing types--to open up a new perception of the "deutschlandscape." Here, architectural norms are reworked and given a new aesthetic twist through ironic self-reflection. These built projects by a critical young generation of German architects reveal highly innovative use of new materials, generate suburban "plug-ins" (temporary and mobile architecture), and skillfully rework the familiar to create solutions for hitherto underrepresented yet vital areas on the urban fringe. Accompanying essays and interviews reveal the personal narratives behind the architecture. Contributions include: "urban therapist" Sonja Beeck on dealing with the psychological dimensions of shrinking cities in the former GDR; artist and urbanist Kai Vöckler on the German psychoscape; Omar Akbar of the Bauhaus Dessau on the wider implications of urban sprawl; Peter Cook on tuning suburbia; Angelika Fitz on strategic answers to restrictive building regulations; Peter Wilson on the marketing of place; and Rudolf Stegers on multi-layered meanings behind the architectural image.

In the mid 1960s Aldo Rossi launched what in retrospect appears a heroic endeavour: a redefinition of architecture founded in the knowledge of the rules and forms that constitute "the European city". Understanding this type of city as a collective artefact, Rossi sought to lead architecture out of the impasse created by a technocratic interpretation of functionalism after World War II. Tendenza, with Aldo Rossi and Giorgio Grassi as its main protagonists, proposed the study of existing cities as architectural phenomena, intending to identify enduring formal patterns that could be reworked into elements of a new design. In this issue of "OASE" these ideas and their bearings on architectural practice are traced through the work of Carel Weeber, arguably the most controversial and successful architect to adopt the Italian ideas and transform them in the Dutch context. This issue will examine the relevance of the experience of Tendenza now, against the background of the almost complete erosion of the urban nature of much of suburbanized Europe. Is the reference to "the European city" still tenable? The transformation of these ideas and design solutions in Holland allows us to gauge their effect on the architectural discipline and their contribution to rethinking existing cities.

This issue explores two interrelated trajectories in contemporary architecture: the renewed relevance of timber, and the transformation of obsolete industrial structures into new cultural territories. Through material innovation and the "overwriting" of time, it examines how architecture bridges the memory of place with future-facing value. It presents three projects that demonstrate the expanded potential of timber architecture today: the Ajung Lake Public Library in Jeonju, which translates the lakeside landscape into a rhythmic timber structure; the Historical Oberamteistrasse Museum in Germany, where the memory of a medieval city is refracted through a translucent glass envelope; and Limberlost Place in Toronto, which pushes the technical boundaries of tall timber construction. Further, three Korean responses to the "existing" (pre-existence) within industrial sites. From 111CM in Suwon, which overlays a modern timber structure onto an old factory frame, and Be-Fore, which leaves a wastewater facility’s raw scars intact, to the Donghae Quarry Remodeling, which reconfigures massive materiality into new spatial tension—these projects explore the poetics of the palimpsest, where the present is delicately written over the traces of the past. The issue also features the Office Building Arquipeo in São Paulo, and the Charleroi Exhibition Center in Belgium, redefined through a strategy of subtraction and void.
