Collect Raindrops celebrates the important things: the change of seasons, slowing down the world for a moment so we can actually taste it, looking up at the stars to dream. Artist Nikki McClure’s delicate images exude an optimism that revolves around community, sustenance, parenting, and appreciating both the urban and rural landscape through a visual language that is uniquely her own. Armed with an X-acto knife, McClure painstakingly cuts out her images from a single sheet of black paper, creating a bold language that translates the complex poetry of motherhood, nature, and activism into a simple and endearing picture. The delicate nature of her work draws the eye, as each element has to be connected to the one next to it in some way, creating a fragile network of shapes and lines.

Résumé:
Sex and jazz, liquor and gambling: Montreal in the early twentieth century was a city that offered an exceptional nighttime scene in North America. By mid-century that scene came under scrutiny, and Montreal’s influential mayor Jean Drapeau would be elected for the first time on a reformist platform that promised to end corruption. Over more than three decades, Drapeau would endeavour to transform Montreal into a world-class global city by regulating its nightlife. "Montreal after dark" chronicles the spaces where nighttime regulations were enforced and contested. City authorities understood the night as enabling disorder, and they reorganized policing and crafted bylaws to gain control over it. Police and politicians mutually reinforced each other’s drive to morally cleanse the urban landscape, especially for international events like Expo 67 and the 1976 Olympics.

From 1936 to 1943, John Vachon traveled across America as part of the Farm Security Administration photography project, documenting the desperate world of the Great Depression and also the efforts at resistance, from strikes to stoic determination. This collection, the first to feature Vachon's work, offers a record of this photographer's vision and of America's land and people as the country moved from the depths of the Depression to the dramatic mobilization for World War II. Vachon's portraits of white and black Americans are among the most affecting that FSA photographers produced; and his portrayals of the American landscape, from rural scenes to small towns and urban centers, present a remarkable visual account of these pivotal years, in a style that is transitional from Walker Evans to Robert Frank.

Résumé:
Featuring a representative and graphically striking sample of the incredible range of letters, names, words and proverbs to be found on Amsterdam buildings, Typography and Architecture: Amsterdam in Letters is a compilation of more than 200 photographs taken by Dutch photographer Maarten Helle. By particularly focusing on typography that was specifically designed or commissioned by the architect of a building, Helle isolates an often forgotten aspect of architecture and of our urban landscape, as these elements are often visually subsumed by the louder yet more ephemeral typographic elements found on billboards, posters and graffiti. Helle's letters endure as architectural traces--often remaining when a building is repurposed--that represent an alternative history of the city. Born in Amsterdam in 1959, Maarten Helle began taking photographs of architecture, typography and Amsterdam in 1993.

Résumé:
Medieval architecture comprises more than the traditional image of Gothic cathedrals and the castles of chivaltry. A great variety of buildings - synagogues, halls, and barns - testifies to the diverse communities and interests in western Europe in the centuries between 1150 and 1550. This book looks at their architecture from an entirely fresh perspective. It shifts the emphasis away from such areas as France towards the creativity of other regions, including central Europe and Spain. It treats the subject thematically, seeking what all buildings, both religious and secular, have in common, and how they reflect the material and spiritual concerns of the people who built and used them. It considers how and why, after four centuries of shaping the landscape and urban patterns of Europe, medieval styles were supereded by classicism.

Tracing an unbroken line, the eye is guided from one sweeping landscape to the next without doubting their separateness in location and origin, showing the interconnectedness of distant environments, opening up conversations between the different (political) landscapes in which we live. Renate Aller is a German living in New York. Her large-scale photographs are held in numerous museums including the Hamburger Kunsthalle, the National Gallery of Art, Washington D. Résumé:
Since the early buildings in the 1950s at Udine in Friuli, Gino Valle has been recognised by international critics as one of the most original and creative European architects of the post-war period. His artistic talent, associated with a great intellectual curiosity and with a genuine passion for the experimentation of new construction systems, led Valle to develop an architectural work resolutely open and multiform. Whether in the smaller towns of Friuli and Veneto or in metropolitan centres as New York, Paris or Berlin, Valle realised a wide range of important works: social housing and banks, factories and offices, town halls and courthouses. These buildings make valuable contributions to debates concerning the relationship between new architecture and historic surroundings, between industrial and open landscape, between urban design and architectural intervention.

Résumé:
Work from the AA’s Diploma Unit 2 fuses two seemingly mutually exclusive paradigms in recent architectural discourse, mediating between technological performance as well as the manipulation of grounds, defined here as the external and internal circulatory systems that structure social organisations. In the process, the unit defines a new social agenda and aesthetic philosophy for transforming established design strategies, and lends conventional notions of sustainable design a new civic and cultural relevance. The projects are all either located within or influenced by a Brazilian context, rich in sculptural, variegated landscapes and African as well as indigenous Indian influences. Innovative design proposals shown in this book illustrate symbiotic relationships between urban society, environmental conditioning and landscape by articulating ground organisations to mediate and synchronise both environmental and cultural flows.

Résumé:
Fifty of the world’s greatest writers share their views in collaboration with the artist Matteo Pericoli, expanding our own views on place, creativity, and the meaning of home All of us, at some point in our daily lives, have found ourselves looking out the window. We pause in our work, tune out of a conversation, and turn toward the outside. Our eyes simply gaze, without seeing, at a landscape whose familiarity becomes the customary ground for distraction: the usual rooftops, the familiar trees, a distant crane. The way of life for most of us in the twenty-first century means that we spend most of our time indoors, in an urban environment, and our awareness of the outside world comes via, and thanks to, a framed glass hole in the wall.

A student of Carlo Scarpa, he inherited from him the artistic and artisanal attitude of the project, the taste for open forms and the sensitivity for an operational scale that extends from the material detail to the landscape. His work ranges from the design of objects and lamps where light becomes the protagonist, to urban housing projects, private and public buildings, exhibition installations and an important painting parenthesis.
