Résumé:
Between 1998 and 2005, the Structural Engineers Association of New York, along with the Museum of Modern Art's Department of Architecture and Design and the School of Architecture at both Princeton University and MIT, co-sponsored a lecture series in honor of the renowned Spanish and Mexican structural engineer Felix Candela, who led the early exploration of concrete shell structures. These lectures are now available in the format of this book: discussed is the work of the Uruguayan engineer Eladio Dieste, who pioneered the use of thin, light-filled shell structures in masonry. Cecil Balmond recounts his collaboration with architects Rem Koolhaas and Daniel Libeskind. The Swiss bridge designer Christian Menn discusses his iconic long-span prestressed concrete bridges, including the new Charles River Bridge in Boston. Leslie E. Robertson, who is especially known for his work on the structural design of the World Trade Center complex with Minoru Yamasaki, discusses this design along with many other projects. Mamoru Kawaguchi recounts his own work in fabric structures and his collaboration with architects Kenzo Tange and Arata Isozaki. Joerg Schlaich talks about his creative collaboration with Frank Gehry. Heinz Isler's contribution is in the aerea of freeform concrete shell constructions. David Billington and Maria Garlock recount the work of master builders Anton Tedesko, Pier Luigi Nervi, Felix Candela, and Heinz Isler.

Résumé:
The new building for Bayer’s company headquarters is innovative and transparent, functional yet sophisticated, embodying the ethos of this global concern. Indeed these were the factors which led Bayer to chose Helmut Jahn’s project in 1998. Comprising four storeys, the structure is semi-elliptical in shape. To the south it blends harmoniously with the Carl-Duisburg Park while to the north, a long garden pergola provides the link to the entry hall. In order to make maximum use of natural resources and minimize technical equipment the concrete structure has a twin shell facade, facilitating natural ventilation and optimizing daylight. This building skin regulates interior and exterior conditions and the integral heating and cooling system takes advantage of the low energy characteristics of water and the thermal storage capacity of concrete. This book portrays this structure in stunning duotone photographs, short texts and plans.

Iceland and architecture?
$49.95

Résumé:
Until comparatively recently, Iceland's architecture was determined by the lack of native trees on the island, which led to extraordinary clay structures covered in turf. With the invention of concrete, further stylistic leaps occurred--and again when Iceland briefly became one of Europe's richest countries. This volume surveys Iceland's unique conditions for architecture.

Résumé:
The architect Herman Hertzberger is one of the most important representatives of Dutch Structuralism. This movement, which emerged in 1960, is highly regarded in modern architecture. Structuralism takes as its starting point the idea that architecture should value the archetypal behaviors of humankind. Consequently, buildings should be inviting, and above all they must satisfy both the individual and the social needs of those who use them. Hertzberger gained international recognition for his office buildings, schools, and housing estates created between 1968 and 1990. In addition to fair-faced concrete and glass, they make use of precast concrete blocks, a “poor” construction material which contributes to their unique character. For this volume, photos by the Munich-based architectural photographer Klaus Kinold document Hertzberger’s masterpieces from their very earliest stages. Many of these buildings have since undergone significant changes, making Kinold’s images an important part of the historical record.
