Résumé:
Grafton Architects have long been known for their attunement to questions of site and culture in their buildings, and their recent institutional projects show the firm’s remarkable sensitivities and talents. But Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara—winners of the Silver Lion at the 2012 Venice Biennale and the 2008 World Building of the Year by the World Architecture Festival—are equally drawn to words and ideas. This collection of lectures delivered at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation (including the Kenneth Frampton Endowed Lecture) highlights their intellectual and literary interests, and includes a dossier of their recent work as well as critical commentary from Kenneth Frampton.

Résumé:
In a letter written near the end of his life, Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720–1778) explained that he left his native Venice because no patrons were willing to support "the sublimity of [his] ideas." Residing in Rome, he became internationally famous as a printmaker and designer, among other numerous pursuits. While Piranesi’s notoriety stems from his etchings, he was also an accomplished draftsman who first developed much of his work in drawings. This is the most comprehensive, updated study of Piranesi’s drawings with over two hundred illustrations offering insight into his life and creative endeavors. Coinciding with the Morgan’s Spring 2023 exhibition, the volume diligently surveys the artist’s enduring work as an artistic force.

Résumé:
This new monograph, the first in 10 years to bring together a truly substantial body of Gillick's work, takes as its focus the artist's projects of the last five years, proposing a new reading of his oeuvre. It draws attention to the rigor of the thinking developed in both his sculptural work and his writings, as well as to his sharp visual sense of the structural and formal properties of his materials. Gillick appeared on the scene at the beginning of the 1990s, right in the middle of the YBA phenomenon, and has since had wide exposure in exhibitions like Documenta, Manifesta and the Venice Biennale, and in being nominated for the 2002 Turner prize.

Résumé:
The experience of architectural spaces is formed by the way they are staged. The Drama of Space examines the composition and articulation of architectural spaces in terms of spatial dramaturgy, as a repertoire of means and strategies for shaping spatial experience. This fundamental approach to architectural design is presented in four parts: Archetypal principles of spatial composition are traced from the study of three assembly buildings of the early modern period in Venice. Theatre, film, music, and theory provide background knowledge on dramaturgy. Detailed analyses of 18 international case studies offer new perspectives on contemporary architecture. The book ends with a systematic presentation of the dramaturgy of space, its parameters and tools, in architectural design.

Résumé:
"Constructed narratives" brings together essays and several recently completed buildings by David Adjaye, in the United States and elsewhere. In the essays, Adjaye shows how his approach to the design of temporary pavilions and furniture, private houses, and installations at the 2015 Venice Biennale feeds into his designs for public buildings. Other essays discuss his engagement with geography, the urban environment, his approach to materiality, and architectural types. The presented projects include two public libraries and the National Museum of African American History and Culture, all in Washington D.C., a residential mixed-use building in New York, and a hybrid art-retail building in Beirut. Two of Adjaye’s current projects are also included.

Résumé:
From their Southeastern European bases in Bucharest and Sofia, artists Dan Perjovschi and Nedko Solakov have taken the international art world by storm over the course of the last 15 years, showing their work either solo or jointly at such prestigious venues as the 2007 Venice Biennale, Documenta 12 in Kassel, Germany and The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Both artists work with pictures, texts and biting irony to comment on the social, political and cultural status quo. Early this year, Perjovschi and Solakov took over Vienna's BA-CA-Kunstforum, drawing all over the walls, floors and surrounding architecture with felt-tipped markers and pencils. Political, witty, subversive and fresh, this winning exhibition is documented here.

Résumé:
The latest addition to the authoritative monograph series documenting each of Alvar Aalto's architectural projects focuses on the house Aalto and his second wife Elissa designed for the Parisian art dealer Louis Carré in the mid-1950s. This profusely illustrated volume describes the architecture of the building, the exceptional interiors and life in the house. It also includes a biographical sketch of Carré, who met Aalto at the opening of the pavilion Aalto had designed for the 1956 Venice Biennale. The friendship between Aalto, the radical experimenter, and Carré, the perfectionist patron of the arts, lasted the rest of their lives, and Maison LC became one of the most exceptional collaborations between architect and client ever built.

Résumé:
The NAi Prize is to be awarded every two years to the best building by a young Dutch architectural practice. This book documents the five short-listed buildings by VMX Architecten, NL Architects, Korteknie Stuhlmacher Architecten, MVRDV and René van Zuuk Architekten and analyses the current position held by young Dutch architects. Are they following in the footsteps of their forebears or blazing a trail of their own? Is there greater leeway in the Netherlands for experiment or can comparable architecture be found elsewhere? And can these five practices be regarded as a barometer for the latest generation of designers? The short-listed projects were presented during the Venice Biennale 2002. Photography: Ralph Kämena, design: Coppens en Alberts.
