Résumé:
One of the greatest challenges for art and culture is to represent diversity. But what precisely does this term mean and why does it so often placate rather than produce what it names? Professor Steven Vertovec, Director of the Max-Planck-Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity (Göttingen, Germany) puts forward the notion of “super-diversity,” noting “the need to re-evaluate conceptions and policy measures surrounding diversity by way of moving beyond an ethno-focal understanding and adopting a multidimensional approach.” Developing this idea further, while aiming to question and complicate the focus on immigration in the current debate, the prolific and provocative scholar and activist Tariq Ramadan weighs in on the subject. In the resulting essay, translated into Dutch and Arabic, Professor Ramadan sets out an argument that foregrounds universalism as a necessary, if devalued, horizon and offers a critique of the uses and limits of dialogue and discourse within the day-to-day practice of super-diversity.

The latest issue of the biannual publication from the public "art think-tank" Casco, based in The Netherlands, explores the notion of playfulness itself as a method and value in cultural practice, positioning it to contrast with fashionable ideologies like "lifelong learning" and "work as play." The publication addresses the impact of the notion of play and gaming methods in cultural work, [exploring connections between text and images and addressing the various research methods to question the historical shift in the concept of the game and playfulness.] Casco, Office for Art, Design and Theory, is devoted to studying art in the public realm, and the relation between art and the physical, social and political environment.

Richard Sennett has spent an intellectual lifetime exploring how humans live in cities. In this pair of essays he visits two of the world's greatest cities at crucial moments in their history to meditate on the condition of exile in both geographical and psychic space: the Jewish Ghetto of Renaissance Venice, where state-imposed outsiderdom was translated into a rich community identity; and nineteenth-century Paris, a magnet for political exiles, where the experience of displacement seeped into the city's culture at large.

Résumé:
Celebrated as the man who wrote an entire novel without using the letter 'e', and another in the form of a vast jigsaw puzzle, Georges Perec found humour - and pathos - in the human need for arrangement and classification. The essays in Thoughts of Sorts explore the rules by which we find a place in the world. Is thinking a kind of sorting? Is sorting a kind of thought?

Résumé:
In Vibrant Matter the political theorist Jane Bennett, renowned for her work on nature, ethics, and affect, shifts her focus from the human experience of things to things themselves. Bennett argues that political theory needs to do a better job of recognizing the active participation of nonhuman forces in events. Toward that end, she theorizes a “vital materiality” that runs through and across bodies, both human and nonhuman. Bennett explores how political analyses of public events might change were we to acknowledge that agency always emerges as the effect of ad hoc configurations of human and nonhuman forces. She suggests that recognizing that agency is distributed this way, and is not solely the province of humans, might spur the cultivation of a more responsible, ecologically sound politics: a politics less devoted to blaming and condemning individuals than to discerning the web of forces affecting situations and events.

Résumé:
In this publication, readers learn how to look at stale clichés with fresh eyes, as artists do, and discover that clichés provide the key to understanding Modernism, from the puns of James Joyce to Ionesco’s Theater of the Absurd. McLuhan mines the greats of modern literature, such as Yeats, Eliot, and Pound, and points the way to richer understanding of their work. Discussion ranges over conventional topics of literary analysis such as genres, esthetics, rhetoric, paradox, mimesis, and parody, though never in conventional fashion, because McLuhan deliberately stakes his turf in a manner that draws technology and culture together. As a result, the key terms cliché and archetype are not confined to language but are shown to have counterparts in the non-linguistic world.

Résumé:
In the same year that Wyndham Lewis published Self Condemned, Marshall McLuhan took inspiration from Lewis’s journal Blast and produced Counterblast, intended, like Self Condemned, to shake the city of Toronto out of its smugness, complacency, and spiritual torpor. This publication spirals beyond its inspiration, pinpointing the paradox of creative and destructive changes issuing from the same social forces, as Lewis had noted, but at the same time revealing the origins of McLuhan’s cultural probes, the basis of the model for media analysis that would find full expression in his writings through more than thirty years following the appearance of Counterblast.
