Current art world statistics demonstrate that the fight for gender and race equality in the art world is far from over: only sixteen percent of this year’s Venice Biennale artists were female; only fourteen percent of the work displayed at MoMA in 2016 was by nonwhite artists; only a third of artists represented by U.S. galleries are female, but over two-thirds of students enrolled in art and art-history programs are young women. Arranged in thematic sections focusing on feminism, race, and sexuality, "Curatorial Activism" examines and illustrates pioneering examples of exhibitions that have broken down boundaries and demonstrated that new approaches are possible, from Linda Nochlin’s “Women Artists” at LACMA in the mid-1970s to Jean-Hubert Martin’s “Carambolages” in 2016 at the Grand Palais in Paris.

Résumé:
Harald Szeemann (1933-2005) was one of the most influential curators of the recent past. An entire generation of curators has been inspired by his independent way of creating exhibitions and his emphatic method of presenting contemporary art. In retrospect, Szeemann's infallible interest in artistic loners with strong attitudes and powerful personalities seems like a vehement contradiction of the kind of art market that focuses on trends and movements. This volume describes the "Szeemann principle," the visions of an enlightened artistic curator, and provides an overview of the most important stations of his singular curatorial career: the legendary exhibitions "When Attitudes Become Form" and documenta 5, the great thematic explorations such as "Bachelor Machines" and "Der Hang zum Gesamtkunstwerk," his discovery of the young Eastern European scenes, and the Biennials in Venice, Lyon, and Seville.

Résumé:
The two Essen-based photographers Petra Wittmar and Ulrich Deimel have been considered top league German architecture photographers since their participation in the Venice Architecture Biennale in 1996. Their latest chosen task has been a documentary photographic presentation of architecture from the period between the wars in North-Rhine Westphalia. Important master builders such as Dominikus Böhm, Fritz Schupp, Peter Behrens or Bruno Paul created structures in the Rhine-Ruhr area. The mine building Zollverein by Schupp/Kremer at Essen can hardly be matched for its functionalist austerity and aesthetic homogeneity, the elegance of the Disch house by Bruno Paul in Cologne has set standards. The photographers also discovered and payed tribute to a number of unknown master pieces, presenting an assembly of portraits of architecture from this era, with characteristic and often surprising details.

A multitude of port cities dot Europe’s coastline, each with its own history and relationship to sea transportation and development. In the era of climate change, these cities can offer paradigms and guidance for sustainable development. Taking a comprehensive, map-based approach, "Port city atlas" offers visualizations of 100 port city territories located on four seas and connected through shared waters—from Amsterdam, Antwerp, Barcelona, Bilbao, Bordeaux, Bremen, Calais, Cork, Dover, Dublin, Felixstowe, Fredericia, Ghent, Hamburg, Helsinki, Kiel, Københavns and La Rochelle to Limerick, Liverpool, London, Lübeck, Malmø, Palermo, Ravenna, Riga, Rønne, Rotterdam, Sköldvik, Stockholm, Tallinn, Venice, Zeebrugge and countless others. Conceived as a reference work, "Port city atlas" provides a foundation for comparative analysis beyond the case-study approach, offering a uniquely sea-oriented take on the understanding and urban design of Europe.

Today, that dynamic approach is being taken to a new level—as climate becomes less forgiving. We have witnessed firsthand how water and fire are attacking us with unprecedented ferocity." This two-volume publication accompanies the 19th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice, titled "Intelligens. Natural. Artificial. Collective." Contributions from more than 750 participants—including architects and engineers, mathematicians and climate scientists, philosophers and artists, chefs and coders, writers and woodcarvers, farmers and fashion designers, and many more—explore how effective methods of adaptation to our changing environment demand inclusivity and collaboration.

Résumé:
In the forty years since the first iteration of Venice Architecture Biennale, the field of architecture has seen a remarkable change in the role played by exhibition-making. While architecture and display have long been intertwined practices, a rapid proliferation of large-scale perennial exhibitions—particularly in the twenty-first century—has resulted in the biennial / triennial becoming an integral part of our discipline, a new geography of itinerant display that has profoundly altered the contours of architectural thought. Between format, space, and content, what are the various agencies and effects of these events? Biennials / Triennials asks these questions and others of a range of curatorial agents and visits crucial sites of recent exhibitions that reveal what is at stake in the newfound ubiquity of the architectural –ennial.

This book explores how artists and curators evoke the past as a part of the present within the framework of contemporary art biennials. Can the nonlinear and poly vocal form of the art biennial—distinctly different from that of historical museums and academia—provide an experimental testing ground for publicly processing the past and reimagining the future? Conceived as a resource for the fields of art and exhibition studies, as well as for readers interested in history and social change, the book includes reflections on artistic and curatorial strategies, from Lagos to Prishtina and from Venice to Gwangju. The 2019 and 2021 editions of the Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art are featured as case-studies opening up for a wider discussion about the relationship between art and the production of historical consciousness.

Résumé:
In the two related bodies of work that form this volume’s centerpiece, New York–based photographer Zoe Leonard (born 1961) poses fundamental questions about the medium of photography and the nature of sight. In a series of large-scale installations, the artist employed the principle of the camera obscura, pairing it with gelatin silver photographs of the sun. The image in Leonard’s room-size camera obscuras is immersive and continuous, shifting constantly in response to the fleeting light of the outside world and unraveling in the surrounding space to come into its full vibrancy. Leonard’s camera obscuras have been sited in cities in Europe and the United States, from Venice and London to New York and Marfa. This title explores this body of work through photographs that document these installations in five international cities.
