Résumé:
Presenting a collection of 25 houses on five continents, Next Houses is a tour of the finest residential architecture of this young century. Author Ron Broadhurst has selected examples from nine countries, showcasing established superstars and emerging architects, including UNStudio, David Adjaye, and David Chipperfield, among others. The products of dialogue between demanding clients and innovative designers, these houses represent the best and most innovative living spaces, including homes created with sustainability and ecofriendliness in mind--such as Werner Sobek's H16 and Krauss Schönberg's Haus W--as well as homes constructed on challenging sites--such as Tadao Ando's 4x4 House or Alvaro Leite Siza Vieira's Casa Tolo. An authoritative collection, Next Houses demonstrates uniquely of-the-moment architecture, and offers up a vision of how we will think of homes in the decades to come.

Résumé:
Vladimir Sorokin’s first published novel, "The Queue," is a sly comedy about the late Soviet 'years of stagnation.' Thousands of citizens are in line for . . . nobody knows quite what, but the rumors are flying. Leather or suede? Jackets, jeans? Turkish, Swedish, maybe even American? It doesn’t matter–if anything is on sale, you better line up to buy it. Sorokin’s tour de(...)

It doesn’t matter–if anything is on sale, you better line up to buy it. Sorokin’s tour de force of ventriloquism and formal daring tells the whole story in snatches of unattributed dialogue, adding up to nothing less than the real voice of the people, overheard on the street as they joke and curse, fall in and out of love, slurp down ice cream or vodka, fill out crossword puzzles, even go to sleep and line up again in the morning as the queue drags on.

Résumé:
The publication of "Cultural Studies 1983" is a touchstone event in the history of Cultural Studies and a testament to Stuart Hall's unparalleled contributions. The eight foundational lectures Hall delivered at the University of Illinois in 1983 introduced North American audiences to a thinker and discipline that would shift the course of critical scholarship. Unavailable until now, these lectures present Hall's original engagements with the theoretical positions that contributed to the formation of Cultural Studies. Throughout this personally guided tour of Cultural Studies' intellectual genealogy, Hall discusses the work of Richard Hoggart, Raymond Williams, and E. P. Thompson; the influence of structuralism; the limitations and possibilities of Marxist theory; and the importance of Althusser and Gramsci. Throughout these theoretical reflections, Hall insists that "Cultural Studies" aims to provide the means for political change.

Nothing in the built world captures the imagination like the skyscraper. Behind every soaring tower stands a designer with courageous vision and enough engineering know-how to pull off incredible feats of architectural derring-do. Who Built That? Skyscrapers is a colorful tour of the world's tallest buildings and the larger-than-life personalities who built them. Beginning with a brief biographical sketch of each architect, illustrator Didier Cornille imaginatively depicts the construction of eight of the world's most impressive skyscrapers. From Gustave Eiffel's Eiffel Tower (1889) in Paris and Mies van der Rohe's Seagram Building (1958) in New York City to the tallest man-made structure in the world, Adrian Smith's Burj Khalifa (2010) in Dubai, this primer will introduce readers of all ages to new heights of architectural wonder.

Résumé:
The Public Collectors project, operated by Marc Fischer since 2007, encourages collectors of material culture — the kind that most museums won’t collect or exhibit — to “open” their collections to the public. Fischer’s perspective is intrinsically linked to his participation in underground punk and metal scenes in the 1980s, a sensibility that also inflects his practice as one-third of the celebrated artist collective Temporary Services. This collection meanders from paper ephemera to photography — including a visual tour of Chicago’s famed Swap-O-Rama. The contents also include adult Mexican comic books and postcards from outsider artist John Rininger. This publication is paired with documentation of the artist’s contribution to the 2014 Whitney Biennial plus an interview with punk ephemera collector Stephen Perkins, exploring the politics of collecting materials with little or no conventional cultural value.

Résumé:
"Ghostly ruins" shows the life and death of thirty structures, from transportation depots, factories, and jails to amusement parks, mansions, hotels, and entire towns. Author Harry Skrdla gives a guided tour of these structures at their peak of popularity juxtaposed with their current state. Structures discussed include the infamous Eastern State Penitentiary and Bethlehem Steel factory in Pennsylvania, the Packard Motors Plant and Book-Cadillac Hotel in Detroit, and Philip Johnson's New York State Pavilion from the 1964/65 World's Fair. There is the entire town of Centralia, Pennsylvania, where a trash fire set inside an old mine in 1962 morphed into an underground inferno that incinerated the town from underneath; more than forty years later, the subterranean fire still rages. The town is empty now, just as the many other abandoned places in this chronicle.

» (Susan Sontag)

Résumé:
Patterns - bold, colorful, muted, delicate, intricate, splashy, spare, figurative, abstract, dizzying, calming - are the subject in this comprehensive reference, the first to examine pattern as an essential part of twentieth-century design history. With stunning color plates and lively text, Lesley Jackson takes readers on a tour of the development of twentieth-century patterns from around the world. Organized by decade, "Twentieth-Century pattern design" details the technical innovations that affected the development of modern textiles and wallpapers. Focusing on surface pattern in the home, Jackson draws frequent parallels to the worlds of fashion, packaging, and graphics, and explores the interrelationship between painting and pattern design. The result is a book as inspiring as it is informative. "Twentieth-Century pattern design" is an invaluable resource for modern design enthusiasts and historians, collectors and interior and graphic designers.
