Résumé:
The profession architect has expanded in recent years, not just in terms of the cultural influences, but equally with respect to scientific advances. The inventive economy has also led to new lifestyle choices and a new role for the architect and architectural practice. We talk of an architecture that is either pre-crisis or post-crisis, the latter resulting in a call for responsible architecture (affordable, sustainable, attainable, and healthy). This development led to changes in the UNStudio practice; with the introduction of Knowledge Platforms and the development from a network to a knowledge practice. Now compiled into an inspiring publication,Knowledge Matterswill help architects to run a better studio and to share knowledge.

Résumé:
Slavs and Tatars is a multi-artists' collective which is fascinated by the area east of the former Berlin Wall and west of the Great Wall of China. Through their often-playful art they delve into the riches of this cultural crossroads, the romantic sphere of influence between Slavs, Caucasians, and Central Asians. Here they plunge into the fables and myths of the mountainous Caucasus region: the first part addresses the complexity of languages and identities on the fault line of Eurasia, and the second part, titled Steppe by Steppe, explores the region's seemingly reactionary approaches to romance. Whether they're looking at art, fashion, lifestyle or science, Slavs and Tatars bring a new point of view to the table.

Résumé:
Urban gambling, linked to poverty, crime and corruption, was once considered a blight on U.S. cities. Gambling then followed the exodus of Americans into the suburbs after World War II, and now most Americans live within a four-hour drive of a casino. What explains the success of places like Las Vegas? The self-contained casino resort removes gambling and its social problems from cities and provides Americans the comfort of gambling in a setting matched to their suburban lifestyle. In a detailed look at the growth of the earliest casino resorts to the "pleasure palaces" and riverboat casinos of today, "Suburban Xanadu" locates the rise of the casino resort in suburbanization and the significance of this development for today.

Résumé:
The great Swiss-German modernist author Robert Walser lived eccentrically on the fringes of society, shocking his Berlin friends by enrolling in butler school and later developing an urban-nomad lifestyle in the Swiss capital, Bern, before checking himself into a psychiatric clinic. A connoisseur of power differentials, his pronounced interest in everything inconspicuous and modest — social outcasts and artists as well as the impoverished, marginalized, and forgotten — prompted W. G. Sebald to dub him 'a clairvoyant of the small.' He was long believed an outsider by conviction, but Susan Bernofsky presents a more nuanced view in this biography. Setting Walser in the context of early twentieth century European history, she provides illuminating analysis of his extraordinary life and work.

What does living in the city mean today? Urban centres promise diversity and agglomeration – they are the motors for changes in society. By means of 26 townhouses, urban multi-storey residential buildings and residential quarters for families, couples, flat/house shares and singles, this book presents a range of current lifestyle and living models. From organisation of the floor plan to construction details, various urban design and social aspects are presented. What decisions are made with regard to the degree of openness to and delimitation from the surrounding environment, which materials are used, how much private and communal space is planned? It is also considered how extensions, conversions and renovations can help to meet economic and ecological living requirements in the city.

Résumé:
"The Expendable Reader" collects the key writings of John McHale (1922-1978): artist, theorist, graphic designer, sociologist, cofounder of the Independent Group and (according to Lawrence Alloway) "the father of Pop." It compiles over a dozen key texts from a range of rare magazines, bringing unavailable material back into the hands of a broader audience. In addition to these writings, "The Expendable Reader" reproduces samples of the dynamic page layouts deployed in McHale's texts. All of McHale's writings wrestle with questions of expendability and the future, and the way these phenomena affect traditional conceptions of culture. While many of the terms he dwells on, such as "expendability," "lifestyle" and "network," have become central terms of contemporary cultural criticism, McHale's voice is strangely missing from the debate.

''Coffee'' --it's the thing that gets us through, and over, and around. The thing--the beverage, the break, the ritual--we choose to slow ourselves down or speed ourselves up. The excuse to pause; the reason to meet; the charge we who drink it allow ourselves in lieu of something stronger or scarier. ''Coffee'' goes to lifestyle, and character, and sensibility: where do we buy it, how do we brew it, how strong can we take it, how often, how hot, how cold? How does coffee remind us, stir us, comfort us? But ''Coffee'' is about more than coffee: it's a personal history and a promise to self; in her confrontation with the hours (with time--big picture, little picture), Dinah Lenney faces head-on the challenges of growing older and carrying on.
