Résumé:
“Street architecture” is an ethos based not on a proposed urban theory, but on urban observation. Like a puzzle formed by pieces of various scales, it represents an array of forces, from the client’s brief to the builder’s realisation. In this book by Karin Templin the residential designs of Amsterdam-based architect Hans van der Heijden are examined in the context of housing and urban design practice, as seen in the street architecture of Florence and other European cities. Besides providing insights into Van der Heijden’s design approach, she looks at the principles of street architecture which could be of interest to urban architects and students, as well as developers and planners.

Résumé:
While lying on the beach in Nice one day, eighteen-year-old Yves Klein and his friends decided to divide the world up among themselves. Klein (1928-1962) chose the air, the cloudless sky. He remained fascinated with the element and its immaterial quality throughout his life. In the late fifties, he and the German architect Werner Ruhnau developed plans for an "architecture of air" composed of walls and roofs of air-as represented, for example, in the idea of the "Temple of the Elements" with fountains of water and fire and a café protected against the rain only by air currents. Klein associated this idea with a philosophy of optimism devoted to the creation of a paradise on earth, a Garden of Eden in which human beings would be free to pursue their own interests. The publication is the first book devoted exclusively to this aspect of Yves Klein's art. It includes reproductions of drawings and other works as well as essays and lectures on the subject. Additional articles by other authors emphasize the significance of Klein's work to the theme of the immaterial.

Résumé:
French designer and self-taught architect Jean Prouvé applied manufacturing techniques to the world of art and design, while also maintaining a social consciousness that informed his commissions. His commitment to “logic, balance and purity” led him to create standardized, affordable furniture and portable, packable houses: most notably the Maison Tropicale for use in France’s African colonies. Despite the overtly industrial aspects of his oeuvre, Prouvé’s work is admired and collected the world over for its graceful yet utilitarian simplicity. Constructive Imagination unites over 100 pieces of Prouve’s emblematic furniture and architectural works, bolstered by sketches and other archival material. The glossy bilingual volume includes five unpublished essays on Prouvé, including one by former Museum of Modern Art, New York curator Juliet Kinchin.

Last June, with the accompaniment of international media attention, the decision was made for a second stage of the Mariinsky Theater in St Petersburg. This opera house, famous worldwide, also due to its director and conductor Valery Gergiev, will receive a contemporary second building, built in close vicinity of the existing Mariinsky Theater, on the other bank of Kryukov canal, with additional 2000 seats. It will fully meet present day performance and technical demands. In order to underline the importance of this project for the Russian Federation, an international invited competition was launched in which the French architect Dominique Perrault, already an established figure among the world's architectural elite due to the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, emerged as the winner.

Résumé:
The Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin is not only a museum but also an architectural milestone. The last building of the great German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969 is widely considered one of the most perfect statements of his aesthetic, with its monumental steel columns and cantilevered roof with glass enclosure. The Neue Nationalgalerie is especially famous for its 50 x 50-meter hall. There is no other van der Rohe structure in which the boundary between inside and outside is as porous as in this famous hall. This publication presents the building from today's perspectives, but also features historical photographs taken during the construction period, the building's opening in 1968 and the spectacular early exhibitions that took place there.

Résumé:
The aesthetic of architect Hector Guimard (1867–1942) has long characterized French Art Nouveau in the popular imagination. This groundbreaking book showcases all aspects of his artistry and recognizes the fundamental modernity of his work. Known for, among other things, the decorative entrances to the Paris Métro and the associated lettering, he often looked to nature for inspiration, and combined materials such as stone and cast iron in unique ways to create designs composed of curves and waves that evoked movement. Guimard broke away from his classical Beaux-Arts training to advocate a modern, abstract style; he also pioneered the use of standardized models for his design objects and experimented with prefabricated designs in his social housing commissions, advancing the technology of the time.

Résumé:
This collection of essays by architect Mario Gooden investigates the construction of African American identity and representation through the medium of architecture. These five texts move between history, theory, and criticism to explore a discourse of critical spatial practice engaged in the constant reshaping of the African Diaspora. African American cultural institutions designed and constructed in recent years often rely on cultural stereotypes, metaphors, and clichés to communicate significance, demonstrating "Africanisms" through form and symbolism?but there is a far richer and more complex heritage to be explored. Presented here is a series of questions that interrogate and illuminate other narratives of "African American architecture," and reveal compelling ways of translating the philosophical idea of the African Diaspora's experience into space.

Résumé:
"Dirty Old River" brings together twelve essays penned by Tom Emerson over the past two decades. Written on very different occasions as contributions to books or articles in magazines, they explore a wide range of topics through the lens of architecture. The book’s title is borrowed from the British rock band The Kinks’ cult song “Waterloo Sunset” to symbolize a journey through the interweaving of culture, imagination, and the built environment. Naturally, Emerson writes about architecture: how it is designed, drawn, and built. Yet he also turns his attention to other, wider fields, from the transformation of materials to the nuances of human creativity, the explosive early works of his celebrated fellow architect Frank O. Gehry, and the intimate craftsmanship behind the literary spaces of French writer Georges Perec.
