Résumé:
Some cities seem destined to become major financial capitals, yet never do--Seville, for instance, was the centre of Spain's opulent New World Empire, but failed to become a financial metropolis. Others, like former colonial backwater Hong Kong, defy the odds by growing into major trading centres. What are the key factors distinguishing those cities that become wealthy from those that don't? Christopher Kennedy illuminates how geography, technology, and especially the infrastructure of urban economies allow cities to develop and thrive. The Evolution of Great World Cities unfolds through the tales of several urban centres -including Venice, Amsterdam, London, and New York City - at key junctures in their histories. Kennedy weaves together significant insights from urbanists such as Jane Jacobs and economists such as John Maynard Keynes, drawing striking parallels between the functioning of ecosystems and of wealthy capitals. The Evolution of Great World Cities offers an accessible introduction to urban economies that "will change the way you think about cities."

Résumé:
The works of Sou Fujimoto resist any form of conventional categorization. This young Japanese architect stands for unconventional buildings that cannot be described by standard criteria and definitions such as inside/outside or public/private. Clear divisions such as between floor levels and rooms are shattered by his complex ground plans and interlocking structures which—in a reference to the idea of the cave—he describes as “Primitive Future.” With this approach he creates forms that are committed to a playful interaction between user and space. Alongside private residences, such as the well-known N House, his library for Musashino Art University has achieved particular recognition. In addition he was represented at the 2010 Venice Biennale with a design for a house. In his personal sketchbook Sou Fujimoto offers insights into his design process. Through the sketches, drawings, and notes readers can trace how his complex concepts are made manifest and develop on paper.

Résumé:
This elegant, boxed set introduces two new works by Thomas Demand, both presented during the 2007 Venice Biennale. The first volume presents "Processo Grottesco," a life-sized paper model of a grotto, complete with stalagmites and stalactites, that was exhibited along with other source materials and Demand's final photographic images. With a section of its pages cut in two, so that one can flip through old cave postcards on top or details of the finished artwork on the bottom, this volume contains rich, exhaustive documentation of the project, including historical documents, working drawings, models in progress, close-up details and final artworks, as well as an essay by Germano Celant. The second, slimmer, silver-edged volume presents the Yellowcake photographs, which portray the Nigerian Embassy in Rome--famous for "sparking" the United States' 2003 invasion of Iraq. It includes essays by Robert Storr and Alex Farquharson, as well as a summary of "Nigergate" by investigative journalist Carlo Bonini.

Résumé:
This book object combines two volumes and covers the sweep and depth of Lewis Baltz’s influential oeuvre. Rule Without Exception is a re-issue of Baltz’s award-winning mid-career retrospective book which accompanied a travelling exhibition of the same name in 1991. The book surveys Baltz’s work from The Prototype Works of 1967 through to Sites of Technology of 1991, showing the range of his images of industrialised landscapes and technological sites. Each section of the book is accompanied by installation views as well as texts by distinguished writers, some newly commissioned for this edition. Only Exceptions is a new book chronicling Baltz’s work – now usually site-generated commissioned works – from 1992 to the present and is published on the occasion of an exhibition organized by the Kunstmuseum, Bonn. Only Exceptions includes Baltz’s work in California, Leipzig’s “Black Triangle”, Reggio Emilia, Groningen, Rome, Venice, and two projects with Jean Nouvel in France and Italy.

Résumé:
The Slovak artist Jana Želibská’s (b. Olomouc, former Czechoslovakia, 1941; lives and works in Bratislava, Slovakia) output ranges from fine art prints, drawings, paintings, objects, and videos to environments, conceptual art, installations, and intermedia art. She first emerged as a major figure on Slovakia’s independent art scene, which embraced conceptual and performative approaches, in the 1960s. Her confidence and progressive convictions speak from her early installations, which candidly address erotic desire and shatter patriarchal structures. The female body stands at the center of Želibská’s immersive environments and paintings. She likes to toy with the audience’s voyeuristic desire, integrating mirrors where one would expect to see female genitalia and veiling parts of the body with curtains. "Jana Želibská—Discovery of Possibility" is the artist’s first solo exhibition outside Slovakia after she made her international debut in the shared pavilion of the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic at the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017. The accompanying catalogue is the first publication on her oeuvre in the German-speaking countries and includes contributions by Nathalie Hoyos, Lucia Gregorová Stach, Rainald Schuhmacher, and Alfred Weidinger.

Résumé:
From Epicentres to the luxury raves of guerilla stores, from minimalist aesthetics to pop editorials. The fashion system expects innovation, flexibility, softness and entertainement from architecture. It wants legitimisation. It wants the values of the brand staged by architecture laden with meaning. Tracing 30 years of architecture for fashion and communication strategies, from Elio Fiorucci to Rei Kawakubo, by way of Calvin Klein and Giorgio Armani, learning the Japanese lesson and overturning communicative logics with Prada, what will the possible future scenario of a relationship between fashion and architecture be? Claudio Marenco Mores, architect, graduated from the IUAV en Venice with a thesis on the use of architecture as a means of brand communication. He specialised in brand design and marketing for luxury goods at the European Institute of Design. He has worked as editor for various fshion magazines and is currently the marketing manager for a company involved in lighting design. MODE is a project by Fondazione Pitti Discovery directed by Maria Luisa and devoted to the ideas and figures of the fashion world.

Résumé:
"Elements of Architecture" focuses on the fragments of the rich and complex architectural collage. Window, façade, balcony, corridor, fireplace, stair, escalator, elevator: the book seeks to excavate the micro-narratives of building detail. The result is no single history, but rather the web of origins, contaminations, similarities, and differences in architectural evolution, including the influence of technological advances, climatic adaptation, political calculation, economic contexts, regulatory requirements, and new digital opportunities. It’s a guide that is long overdue—in Koolhaas’s own words, “Never was a book more relevant—at a moment where architecture as we know it is changing beyond recognition.” Derived, updated, and expanded from Koolhaas's exhaustive and much-lauded exhibition at the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale, this is an essential toolkit to understanding the fundamentals that comprise structure around the globe. Designed by Irma Boom and based on research from the Harvard Graduate School of Design, the 2,600-page monograph contains essays from Rem Koolhaas, Stephan Trueby, Manfredo di Robilant, and Jeffrey Inaba; interviews with Werner Sobek and Tony Fadell (of Nest); and an exclusive photo essay by Wolfgang Tillmans.

Résumé:
Critical theories such as those of the Frankfurt School of the twenties and thirties gave rise to a complex and sophisticated critique of modernity and modernism. The history and theory of twentieth-century architecture, which developed rather independently of this rich tradition, appear naive and unbalanced in comparison. In this exploration of the relationship between modernity, dwelling, and architecture, Hilde Heynen attempts to bridge this gap between the discourse of the modern movement and cultural theories of modernity. On one hand, she discusses architecture from the perspective of critical theory, and on the other she modifies positions within critical theory by linking them with architecture. She assesses architecture as a cultural field that structures daily life and that embodies major contradictions inherent in modernity, arguing that architecture nonetheless has a certain capacity to adopt a critical stance vis-à-vis modernity. The book provides architectural students with an introduction to the discourse of critical theory. The subchapters on Walter Benjamin, Ernst Bloch, Theodor Adorno, and the Venice School (Tafuri, Dal Co, Cacciari) can be studied independently.

Résumé:
Hermann & Valentiny first came to public attention in the 1980s with their villa in the Rauchstrasse, a part of the International Building Exhibition in Berlin, when postmodernism was at its peak in Europe. Since then the office which is based in Vienna and Remerschen has built in Austria, Luxembourg and Germany, and its architecture has progressed in both form and content. Representing Luxembourg at the architecture biennale in Venice, Hermann & Valentiny reveal how architecture and art can be successfully combined. This up-to-date report "Now" illustrates how conceptual questions and a comparatively restricted choice of materials dominate the work of Hermann & Valentiny. Wherever possible they use concrete to replace plaster; glass maintains its unique role; metal mesh acts as a membrane, allowing historical architecture to shimmer through. Moreover, colour has a special function in their architecture. Not just black and white, but also tomato red, melon yellow, peppermint green... Finally, the book reveals the architects' general concepts which incorporate the living, the natural surroundings in the plans.
