Résumé:
The creative forms of literature and architecture appear to be distinct, one constructing a world on the page, the other producing the world in which we live. It is a conscious act to read literature, but the effects of architecture can pass by unnoticed. Yet, despite such obvious differences, writers and architects share a dynamic with their readers and visitors that is unpredictably similar. Writing and Seeing Architecture unveils a candid conversation between Christian de Portzamparc, celebrated French architect, and influential theorist Philippe Sollers that challenges us to see the analogous nature of writing and architecture. Their fascinating discussion offers a renewal of visionary architectural thinking by invoking past literary ideals that sought to liberate society through the reinvention of writing itself. Urging that new rules be set for each creation rather than resorting to limitations of the capitalist society, the authors’ daring confrontation of the interactions between writing and designing a space forcefully demonstrates the importance of intellectuals and practitioners intervening in the public sphere.

There's something irresistible about a skyscraper. It can reshape an entire city skyline and from the building's top floors, people can see the world from a different perspective. Travelling from New York City to Dubai, from London to Shanghai and from Kuala Lumpur to Chicago, this colourful book features double-page spreads for each of the skyscrapers it profiles. Each chapter includes photographs, information on the building's architect and history and interesting facts about its construction and use. For instance, why is the Chrysler Building so admired, even though it doesn't stand nearly as tall as other skyscrapers? How do you measure the height of a building and how do you make sure it doesn't topple over in strong winds? How has skyscraper technology changed, from the steel frame skeletons that supported the earliest towers to the advanced computer programs that are now needed to design buildings more than 100 stories high? How has city life changed since the first skyscrapers were built?

Résumé:
Detailing architect Florian Beigel's prize-winning land reclamation project, this book is a study of urban planning typology and the derivation of an urban land-use concept plan based thereon including solutions to environmental issues. Florian Beigel and the Architecture Research Unit were invited by the Provincial Government of Jeollabukdo, Korea in 2008, along with seven other teams to participate in an international ideas competition to develop urban design proposals for the Saemangeum land reclamation project. Saemangeum Island City comprises a surface area of some 400 km^2, more than a quarter of the area of Greater London (which is approx. 1.570 km^2). The design project by ARU / London Metropolitan University was declared one of three winning competition proposals and selected to be part of the main exhibition at the 2010 Venice Biennale. The urban land-use concept plan begins with a phased landscape infrastructure design of 8 new islands with a highly remarkable solution as to environmental issues.

Résumé:
Bertrand Goldberg (1913-1997) was a visionary Chicago architect whose designs for housing, urban planning, and industrial design made a distinctive mark in the modern era. This handsome publication, the first to focus in-depth on the entirety of Goldberg's life and work, traces his development from his early Bauhaus training to his notable architectural achievements. Featuring previously unpublished material, it also includes Goldberg's plans for unrealized projects as well as his collaborations with other prominent modern architects, such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Buckminster Fuller. Goldberg's interest in the social dimension of architecture was reflected in many of his cutting-edge designs. In 1959, he conceived the plan for his most iconic structure, the sixty-story Marina City residential towers, in the heart of downtown Chicago. He created a number of hospitals that offered a new paradigm for how patients and staff interacted within the space. Goldberg's progressive designs also extended to schools, prefabricated structures, and furniture.

Résumé:
Hailed as “one of the greatest minds of our times,” Richard Buckminster Fuller is known as an American visionary, designer, architect, engineer, inventor and philosopher and was undeniably one of the key innovators of the 20th century. This book provides a visually rich and complete overview of Fuller’s design and architectural production, situating Fuller’s projects in their historical context. The book features never before published material from the Fuller archives which were recently donated to Stanford University. Michael John Gorman’s essay offers an in-depth analysis of Fuller’s work - focusing more attention on his innovative architectural projects than on other aspects of Fuller’s “design science” - as well as an interesting perspective on post-war American society and architectural culture. Chapters include concepts of Fuller’s philosophy, his manifesto for mass-produced housing, the role of mobile shelter in transforming behaviour, geodesic domes, and Fuller’s early experiments. Fuller’s achievements, astonishing design and production are fully documented using original and often unknown archival materials.

Résumé:
"Event-Cities 5" is the fifth and final volume in the MIT Press series documenting recent built and unbuilt projects by renowned architect Bernard Tschumi. This volume expands on the theoretical preoccupations that have shaped Tschumi's work in practice and pedagogy. In this volume, Tschumi embarks on what he calls a “poetics” that addresses both the rational elaboration of work and the irrational eruption of inexplicable elements in architectural projects. How do chance, intuition, and analogy, among other elements, intersect with the logical play of concept, context, and program to generate innovative and informed design? Highlights of this volume include circular building projects, works with suspended gardens and floating rectangular masses, superposed structures created via surrealist tactics, an immense educational research complex in France that hovers between building and urban design, a museum in China made from intersecting conic shapes, and a project for a cultural center in Italy that is structured as an investigation into courtyards and facades.

Résumé:
In a world where artificial intelligence has and increasingly important place in our daily lives, and more and more of our time is spent on screens, what does "Living as Nature" mean anymore? We wanted to answer this question in a two eyed seeing approach, a term coined by Mi’kmaw elder Albert Marshall referring to seeing from one eye with strengths of Indigenous ways of knowing, and from the other eye with the strengths of Western ways of knowing, and to use both of these eyes together to move forward. This can be seen through the pairing of Wendat values and the principles of the Montréal Declaration for a Responsible Development of Artificial Intelligence. We offer a mirrored reflection on this topic, from the perspectives of a researcher in AI for biodiversity conservation (Mélisande) and an Indigenous landscape architect (Carling): How can AI researchers working on applications in biodiversity reconcile Western science with Indigenous knowledge and ways of knowing of "Living as Nature?"

Résumé:
One of Austria’s most influential architects, Otto Wagner (1841-1918) played a key role in modernizing urban architecture. Forming an approach described as structural rationalism, Wagner pioneered use of materials such as glass, steel, and especially aluminium. He was associated with the Viennese Succession, a group of artists and designers headed by Gustav Klimt that initiated a departure from the conservative style of the Viennese Künstlerhaus. Among Wagner’s most important buildings are the Vienna Postsparkassenamt (Postal Savings building) and the Steinhof Church. Part of Taschen's Basic Architecture series. Each title in the series contains approximately 120 images, including photographs, sketches, drawings, and floor plans. Introductory essays explore the architect’s life and work, touching on family and background as well as collaborations with other architects. The body presents the most important works in chronological order, with descriptions of client and/or architect wishes, construction problems (why some projects were never executed), and resolutions. The appendix includes a list of complete or selected works, biography, bibliography and a map indicating the locations of the architect’s most famous buildings.

Résumé:
As readers of Huxtable's Pulitzer Prize-winning criticism know, she is a discerning writer fluent in architectural thought and practice. She now offers a fresh perspective on Frank Lloyd Wright's much scrutinized yet still surprising life. Comfortable with ambiguity and complexity, Huxtable not only parses both key events and overlooked subtleties, she also wrestles with the prickly questions about character and creativity raised by the contrast between Wright's self-serving, tyrannical behavior and his enormously influential achievements. Fascinated by Wright's supreme confidence, fiscal recklessness, con-man charm, and phoenixlike resurrections, Huxtable tells the still shocking stories of his abandonment of his first wife and six children; the gruesome murders at Taliesin, his Wisconsin estate; and the conflicts with his vindictive second wife that landed him in jail and left him homeless. But Huxtable is no less compelling in her chronicling of Wright's ever-evolving vision of "organic architecture," which gave rise to his Prairie house; the Usonian house, the prototype for the ranch house; and many other innovations, thus renewing appreciation for a wildly unconventional but essential architect.

Résumé:
Among distinguished contemporary designers, Alessandro Mendini is perhaps most deserving of the overused title of Renaissance man. Painter, writer, architect, theorist, designer: his work in all these fields has influenced generations of other artists and craftsmen and delighted even those who don’t know his name but have entered his spaces (like his stores for Alessi and Swatch), sipped from his espresso cups, and rested in his chairs. Through his work as a founder of Studio Alchimia in 1979 and editor of the magazines Casabella, Modo, and domus, Mendini has fought the strictures of modernism and championed the expressive value of decoration, which is the foundation for the development of his designs. This book offers a window into Mendini's working methods by presenting some 2,000 of his introductory designs, sketches, and texts that would eventually be realized as objects and buildings. This one-of-a-kind archive is both an important contribution to the history of design for scholars and students and a source of inspiration for designers and artists.
