Résumé:
In the late 19th century, a centuries-old preference for highly ornamented architecture gave way to a budding Modernism of clean lines and unadorned surfaces. At the same moment, everyday objects—cups, saucers, chairs, and tables—began to receive critical attention. Alina Payne addresses this shift, arguing for a new understanding of the genealogy of architectural modernism: rather than the well-known story in which an absorption of technology and mass production created a radical aesthetic that broke decisively with the past, Payne argues for a more gradual shift, as the eloquence of architectural ornamentation was taken on by objects of daily use. As she demonstrates, the work of Adolf Loos and Le Corbusier should be seen as the culmination of a conversation about ornament dating as far back as the Renaissance. Payne looks beyond the usual suspects of philosophy and science to establish theoretical catalysts for the shift from ornament to object in the varied fields of anthropology and ethnology; art history and the museum; and archaeology and psychology.

Résumé:
The five-volume set "Food for architects" is dedicated to the buildings and recipes of the renowned Zurich-based firm Steib Gmür Geschwentner Kyburz Partners. As enthusiastic housing designers, they have been searching for both the perfect floor plan and the perfect spaghetti for three decades. Volume 1 of this first comprehensive book on the firm’s work brings together brief personal texts on the various types of rooms in a house or apartment as well as other aspects of living. Volume 2 offers insights into the evolution and design methods of Steib Gmür Geschwentner Kyburz Partners, documenting sixty-five key buildings and projects from their portfolio. Volume 3 features floor plans of a total of 168 furnished apartments with concise comments, interspersed with recipes for twelve spaghetti dishes. In a photo essay, volume 4 introduces the inhabitants of eleven apartments from various realized buildings, who also speak about their homes in brief interviews. The dessert of this five-course menu is the concluding volume 5, featuring a conversation with the firm’s four partners—Jakob Steib, Patrick Gmür, Michael Geschwentner, and Matthias Kyburz—as they discuss topics that are key to their architectural work.

Résumé:
This book offers a portrait of the lives and struggles of Palestinians living in the occupied Palestinian territories on the West Bank, in particular the South Hebron Hills and the Jordan Valley. Among the topics highlighted are house demolitions; confrontations between Palestinian shepherds or farmers and Israeli settlers, soldiers, and police; the daily challenges of sheer existence posed by the occupation system, intent on pushing Palestinians off their land; and the tenacity and courage that these conditions require. The book endeavors to impart to the reader a sense of the beauty of the landscape, the sound of the language, the taste of friendships, and the richness of a way of life that is threatened with extinction. Voices of activists, both Palestinian and Jewish, are also present. The introduction sets forth, in brief, the historical context that generated present realities in Palestine as well as the history of the authors’ partnership. The book’s viewpoint reflects many years of activism on the peace and human rights front in Palestine as well as an ongoing conversation between two authors who have experienced together the continually renewed astonishment that comes with such encounters.

Résumé:
As the world adapts to the consequences of a global pandemic, museums continue to experience unprecedented disruption and change. At the same time, there is a growing debate and dissent over what museums are for, who they speak to, and what the histories, objects, and ideas they are tasked with holding reflect—all taking place within a public sphere that feels increasingly dynamic and volatile. Taking a wide-ranging and thought-provoking look at the roles and responsibilities of some of our most well-known and best-loved public institutions, ''Gathering of Strangers'' explores the critical challenges and opportunities for the museum at this point in the twenty-first century. Moving from the historical origins of the gallery to important current debates taking place around art and public engagement, the climate emergency, race equality and decolonization, and the value of the arts in education—this book sets out the role of art and artists in imagining and shaping our collective future. It is also a love letter to the museum, from a sector leader who is at the forefront of the cultural conversation today.

Résumé:
It was their almost obsessive interest in mathematics, fascination with technique and pleasure in designing that caused Moshé Zwarts and Rein Jansma to join forces in 1990. Given the sheer size of their output, it is impossible not to be confronted regularly with projects by Zwarts & Jansma. The major infrastructure works like bridges, viaducts, tunnels, stadiums and sports complexes loom large in our daily environment. What we often do not see is how ingeniously this work fits together and what processes brought it to that stage. In a conversation with collegue-architect Philippe Samyn this aspect is discussed in particular. Zwarts and Jansma themselves also describe in this book their often unusual sources of inspiration and motive forces. Yet for all that, the design process they follow is a rational one that since the 1980s has consistently featured the computer as a design resource. The book gives a complete overview of the work of Zwarts & Jansma Architects. A selection of thirty works are fully documented in site plans, floor plans, sections and details and of course text, plus photographs taken specially for this book by Rob 't Hart.

Résumé:
Marc Camille Chaimowicz was one of the first artists to merge the realms of performance and installation art.His important 1972 installation Celebration? Realife featured masks, mirrors, various small objects, including masks and a mirror ball, music by the Rolling Stones, David Bowie, and others-and the artist, serving tea and engaging visitors in conversation in an adjacent room. It raised questions about public/private dichotomies, art/design boundaries, and identifications based on gender, and recast the artist as a kind of art director and stage designer. This work's recent reinstallation (as Celebration? Realife Revisited 1972/2000) and the critical acclaim it inspired confirms Chaimowicz's importance and points to his relationships with artists as different and as difficult as Cerith Wyn Evans, Jutta Koether, Kai Althoff, and others. This richly illustrated study of Celebration? Realife, with many color images, uses Chaimowicz's installation to reconstruct that cultural moment in the 1970s when the role of the artist and the relationships of art, design, popular culture, and performance changed. Tom Holert is an art historian, independent scholar, and critic who has published widely in magazines including Artforum and Bookforum.

Résumé:
No building better embodies the ineffable qualities of rural France than the lavoir, the communal washhouse that, until a few decades ago, was the central gathering place for women in many small villages across the French countryside—as much a part of communal life as the market. These open-air laundry rooms first appeared for the private use of the social elite in the seventeenth century, but flourished as public spaces after the Revolution. Later, they became architectural monuments of regional styles and local materials, often hand-cut stone and hewn timbers, revealing centuries of masonry and woodworking tradition. As running water and modern appliances became standard in French homes after World War II, the lavoirs were abandoned, and with them three hundred years of women's gathering and conversation. In spite of the efforts of preservationists, hundreds of them have faced abandonment, vandalism, and decay. Through duotone photographs, thoughtful sketches, and detailed watercolors, Mireille Roddier safeguards these places. Her text outlines the history, politics, health, water technology, and social background of the buildings and unveils them as an important architectural type worthy of our study, admiration, and protection.

Résumé:
''Who is the architect?'' explores how the figure of the architect has been constructed and challenged in recent years. Traditionally perceived as male, Western and individualistic, architects are now being urged to redefine themselves in a more diverse, inclusive manner. The publication discusses the need to challenge norms and establish caring as an essential quality in the architectural discourse. With the threat of environmental collapse and other societal challenges, the need for collective teamwork and empathy has become central in establishing a common understanding that includes all beings. ''Building diversity'' aims to tackle these issues and explore topics on diversity and equality in the architectural field's past, present and future. The publication features thoughts and ideas from a broad range of countries and diverse perspectives on the architectural field, contributing to a wider dialogue about inclusion, intersectionality and progress. ''Building diversity'' is not intended to provide concrete solutions but aims to stimulate discussion and open up venues for hosting dialogues pointing to possible paths and the expansion of perspectives. It is an important contribution to the ongoing conversation about diversity and equality in the architectural field.
