The architectural principle of the cellular compartment floor plan is as simple as it is economical, yet it allows for spatial and combinable freedom that can be interpreted in ever-new and ever-different ways. The resulting self-contained units or spatial sequences are suited for residential purposes as much as for office buildings, museums, or schools, with the floor plans providing highly dynamic and surprising traffic patterns and views. The cellular compartment floor plan is the generating principle in many buildings, projects, and competition entries by the renowned Basel-based Luca Selva Architects, who have been continually developing this typology in their practice, modifying it and adapting it for new applications in different projects. The cellular compartment floor plan is therefore the ideal focus of this new book on the work of the prolific firm. Numerous plans and photographs are supplemented with a theoretical essay by Christoph Wieser and a conversation between Luca Selva and Patrick Gmür. Shedding light for the first time on this surprisingly sparsely researched topic, this comprehensive book will have significance for the discourse reaching well beyond the exemplary designs by Luca Selva Architects.

Résumé:
This 768-page volume stands as the most comprehensive source on the Canadian collective General Idea, founded in Toronto in 1969 by Felix Partz, Jorge Zontal and AA Bronson and active until the deaths of Partz and Zontal in 1994. The book is arranged in three parts: Performances and Actions, In the Streets and In the Showroom. The first two parts focus on ephemeral, time-based and even disposable works. The third part includes a plate section offering a near-complete visual survey of General Idea's practice. Facing-page comparative images show works as they appeared in historical installations or other relevant contexts. These three sections correspond broadly to the collective’s development: from performances, actions, pageants and other practices (1969–78), through works engaging with mass-media formats such as the magazine, television and video (1972–’80s), and finally to works conceived for galleries and museums (1985–94). The publication features a prologue by AA Bronson, a conversation between him and Beatrix Ruf, and new texts by international scholars. The appendix includes a complete scholarly bibliography, exhibition and performance histories, and an illustrated chronology of the group.

The special relationship between photography and architecture, between photography and space, the specific encounter when the tangent touches the circle is explored in this new series of exhibitions and publications in which contemporary artists are invited to enter into visual conversations with a body of photographs selected from the extensive collection of the CCA. "Tangent" is inaugured with the work of Alain Paiement. The book takes the form of a conversation between Hubertus von Amelunxen and Alain Paiement, and presents the new works by Paiement as well as the photographs he himself chose from the CCA collection.

The first book to look extensively at conceptualism in Canada, published to accompany a touring exhibition. The most transformative art movement of the late 20th century, conceptual art became a global phenomenon long before it was popularized by a new generation of artists and institutions in the early 21st century. Its various manifestations in Canada, however, have remained a limited concern, a whispered art history circulated among artists and writers primarily in alternative publications and artist-run centres. Traffic: Conceptual Art in Canada 1965-1980 is the first publication and exhibition to track the complex, rigorous and diverse manifestations of conceptual art in the country. Presenting work by more than 90 artists, Traffic examines the particular local and geographic needs and interests enacted by individual artists, collectives and art communities from across the country. The book includes essays by six curators, a conversation with an international group of scholars, an annotated chronology and many reproductions of conceptual artworks produced in Canada. Co-published by the Vancouver Art Gallery, Art Gallery of Alberta, Justina M. Barnicke Gallery (Hart House, University of Toronto), Leonard & Bina Ellen Gallery (Concordia University) and Halifax, INK

Résumé:
Informed by early twentieth-century avantgardes, principally cubism and expressionism, Dana Schutz's art is an extraordinary and joyful mash-up where a multitude of references and allusions collide. The exhilarating results can be understood as a productive conversation with the history of painting and as a compelling testament to painting's complex and unending death throes. With its conflations of Gericault, horror films, Ensor, Picasso, Guston, porn, and pop culture, her work appears to counter and confront the imperious Internet information colossus, where everything is available at once. This bilingual publication accompanies an exhibition of new and recent work. Born in 1976, Dana Schutz is a New York based artist whose work over the past decade has had a notable influence on contemporary painting. She has had solo exhibitions at, notably, Miami Art Museum (2012); Denver Museum of Contemporary Art and Denver Art Museum (2012); and Hannover Kesterngesellschaft and Hepworth Wakefield (2013). Her work is found in numerous collections including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, The Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, and Whitney Museum of American Art.

Résumé:
Maurice R. Stein and Larry Miller’s 'Blueprint for Counter Education' is one of the defining (but neglected) works of radical pedagogy of the Vietnam War era. Originally published as a boxed set by Doubleday in 1970, the book was accompanied by large graphic posters that could serve as a portable learning environment for a new process-based model of education, and a bibliography and checklist that map patterns and relationships between radical thought and artistic practices—from the modernist avant-gardes to postmodernism, from the Bauhaus to Black Mountain College, from Theodor Adorno and Walter Benjamin to Buckminster Fuller and Norman O. Brown—with Herbert Marcuse and Marshall McLuhan serving as points of anchorage. 'Blueprint for Counter Education' thus serves as a vital synthesis of the numerous intellectual currents in the countercultural debate on the radical reform of schools, universities and ways of learning. To accompany this new facsimile edition of the book and posters, an 80-page booklet features a conversation with the original Blueprint creators, Maurice R. Stein, Larry Miller and designer Marshall Henrichs, as well as essays from Jeffrey Schnapp, Paul Cronin and notes on the design by Adam Michaels of Project Projects.

Résumé:
Robert A. M. Stern is dedicated to the synthesis of tradition and innovation. In more than thirty-five years of practice, he has produced a wide range of building types with a variety of stylistic influences, all inspired by the great legacy of American architecture. His firm, Robert A. M. Stern architects, was first recognized for its distinguished houses, and residential design remains the cornerstone of the practice. This illustrated monograph-a companion to "Robert A. M. Stern: houses"- presents twenty-six of the firm's most memorable houses. Located in diverse settings across North America-from a valley in Colorado with views of the Aspen mountains to a bluff overlooking Long Island Sound to an island off the coast of British Columbia-these houses reveal the architect's emphasis on the importance of context and his dedication to exploring the nature of space. Each house invokes the vernacular architectural heritage particular to its region while reflecting its unique natural surroundings. Whether they are Shingle style "cottages" by the sea, colonial Georgian country estates, or elegant Regency designs, Stern's houses are unique both for their timelessness and their ability to evoke a conversation with the past-a dialogue he believes lies at the heart of architecture.
