Included are representations of artworks and museum exhibits created by artists Oliver Ressler, Sayler/Morris, Dread Scott, Temporary Services, and others, original Isotype graphics drawn from the museum’s lexicon of “capitalisms,” and texts from Lucy Lippard, Lester K. Résumé:
Certificates of authenticity are a critical aspect of art works today. They often embody the artwork itself, while referring to it, serving as its deed, legal statement, and fiscal invoice. Certificates by artists validate the authorship and originality of the work and they allow the work of art to be positioned in the marketplace as a branded product. Providing examples of artists certificates from the past fifty years, this book reveals how roles have shifted and developed, as well as how the materials and content of art have changed. With certificates by Judith Barry, Pierre Bismuth, Daniel Buren, Marcel Duchamp, Dan Flavin, Liam Gillick, Hans Haacke, Edward Kienholz, Yves Klein, Joseph Kosuth, Sol LeWitt, Piero Manzoni, Gordon Matta-Clark, Jonathan Monk, Robert Morris, Antoni Muntadas, Yoko Ono, Robert Rauschenberg, David Shrigley, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Ben Vautier, Lawrence Weiner, Franz West and others.

Résumé:
From the time of its invention, photography has enabled artists not only to capture the world around them but also to create worlds of their own. "Utopia/Dystopia" investigates how artists from the late 19th century to the present have used photographic fragments or techniques to represent political, social, or cultural states of utopia or dystopia. Artists have employed a number of strategies to this end, such as cutting, fragmenting, and puncturing images as well as reassembling those culled from ready-made materials or giving a subject multiple exposures. The resulting photographs, photocollages, photomontages, and other creations question the validity of seamless pictorial images, and attempt to dismantle the notion of photography as an objective medium. This publication features approximately forty-five exemplary works by artists such as Herbert Bayer, John Heartfield, Hannah Hoch, Arata Isozaki, El Lissitzky, Carter Mull, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Vik Muniz, Man Ray, Okanoue Toshiko, and many others.

Résumé:
This publication documents more than 130 alternative spaces, groups, and projects, and the significant contributions these organizations have made to the aesthetic and social fabric of New York City. Alternative art spaces offer sites for experimentation for artists to innovate, perform, and exhibit outside the commercial gallery-and-museum circuit. In New York City, the development of alternative spaces was almost synonymous with the rise of the contemporary art scene. Beginning in the 1960s and early 1970s, it was within a network of alternative sites--including 112 Greene Street, The Kitchen, P.S.1, FOOD, and many others--that the work of young artists like Yvonne Rainer, Vito Acconci, Gordon Matta-Clark, Ana Mendieta, David Wojnarowicz, David Hammons, Adrian Piper, Martin Wong, Jimmie Durham, and dozens of other now familiar names first circulated. Through interviews, photographs, essays, and archival material, Alternative Histories tells the story of such famous sites and organizations as Judson Memorial Church, Anthology Film Archives, A.I.R. Gallery, El Museo del Barrio, Franklin Furnace, and Eyebeam, as well as many less well-known sites and organizations. Essays by the exhibition curators and scholars, and excerpts of interviews with alternative space founders and staff, provide cultural and historical context.

Résumé:
From its Futurist and Dadaist origins to the body art of the 1970s and more recent developments in the genre, the history of Performance art is oriented around a fairly consistent set of elements: movements, speech, the body, impermanence, audience participation. But artists have also produced installations and performative objects for their performances, whose status becomes ambiguous once the action is over. Not to Play with Dead Things pays overdue attention to these frequently orphaned props of performance art, documenting works from the 1960s to the present by artists as diverse as Richard Jackson, Paul McCarthy, Roman Signer, Mike Kelley, Franz West, Jim Shaw, Guy de Cointet, John Bock, Spartacus Chetwynd, Catherine Sullivan and Erwin Wurm. Not to Play with Dead Things asks: are these objects relics of their own making? And is their hybridity a kind of resistance to the streamlining of art?
