"The signature of all things" is Giorgio Agamben’s sustained reflection on method. Résumé:
"The signature of all things" is Giorgio Agamben’s sustained reflection on method. To reflect on method implies for Agamben an archeological vigilance: a persistent form of thinking whose path is to expose, examine, and elaborate that which remains obscure, unthematized, even unsaid, in an author’s thought. To be archeologically vigilant, then, is to return to, even invent, a method attuned to a "world supported by a thick plot of resemblances and sympathies, analogies and correspondences." The range of authors and of topics Agamben collects in this slim but dense volume exemplifies this search to create a science of signatures that exceeds either a semiology or hermeneutics vainly attempting to determine the pure and unmarked signs that signify univocally, neutrally, and eternally.

Résumé:
In "Unfamiliar journeys", photographer Alan McKernan takes us on an unconventional excursion through his home town, the ever-changing city of Liverpool. McKernan has spent the past ten years documenting the city’s evolution, and these photographs reflect both the grandeur and decay of this modern urban landscape. As well as Liverpool’s architectural landmarks, "Unfamiliar journeys" captures deserted warehouses, boarded-up butchers’ shops, the cathedral glimpsed between shabby terraces. Signs of Liverpool’s recent economic boom – billboards, towering high-rises, skeletal construction cranes – also feature. It takes a moment to realize that there are no people in McKernan’s vision of the city. The unusual viewpoints and stark pattern of cast shadows caught on black and white silver-based film enhances this feeling of eerie enchantment.

Résumé:
"Old Europe" is beginning to show strong signs of renewed vitality, to judge from the results of this latest edition of the European Union prize for contemporary architecture - Mies van der Rohe award 2003. And not only because 269 works were selected, or because the number of competing countries (particularly those of Eastern Europe) is steadily increasing, bit also by virtue of the high average standard of the entries, particularly of the winning projects and 40 runner-up featured in this catalogue. In the end, the winning project encompasses all this : Zaha Hadid's tram station in Strasbourg is at the same time a strategy, open-ended, imperfect, intelligent and playful. But it also resolved and unafraid to identify with conventional architectural qualities.

Résumé:
The town of Djenne on the Bani River in Mali has been a thriving settlement for more than two millennia. Renowned for its mud-brick architecture, monumental mosque, and merchant-traders' houses, Djenne remains one of Africa's most distinctive cities. Trevor Marchand signs on as a builder's apprentice and takes readers on his journey from raw labourer to skilled craftsman. He explores the professional associations of masons, their social networks, training regimes, and changing fortunes. With his fellow builders, he produces mud bricks and plasters, constructs walls and ceilings, and sculpts rooftop crenellations using specialized tools. Marchand describes the raising of a mud-brick house and explores the technical, social, and magical processes involved in making buildings and renewing the unique urban environment of Djenne.

Résumé:
This book features images by American photographer William Wylie (b. 1957) taken over the course of five years. The photographs reanimate the ancient city of Pompeii, showing the ongoing cycles of deterioration and preservation that mark it as a living landscape. Wylie captures Pompeii’s former grandeur, including its terracotta reliefs and wall paintings, while also drawing attention to the signs of an active excavation site, from plaster casts in glass cases to ceramic fragments in storage facilities. His elegant compositions and command of light and shadow highlight how natural phenomena, pollution, and human intervention are continually reshaping the city. People, however, are notably absent in the photographs. Wylie beautifully documents Pompeii’s present by engaging with the tenuous relationship that the archaeological site maintains with the past.

Résumé:
This special edition was conceived on the occasion of the Centenary of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, which relied on Promemoria to talk about its archives through a new perspective and an unusual format as proposed by the editorial staff of Archivio Magazine. Every archive hides a special story, one or more tales that have never been read, never been heard: traces, signs that can give life to new interpretations of the past and the present. To sharper visions of our future. The UCSC Centenary Edition by Archivio Magazine is a work of research and narration, an unprecedented witness to how unexpected a project born at the center of a story, at the center of History—in the archives—can be.
