Résumé:
Danish artist and urban activist Jakob Kolding makes collages that ask: "Who built your neighborhood? For whom was it built? Who uses the space?" This is a visual and verbal dialogue on the dense urban landscapes familiar throughout the globe. Through essays, poignant collages of appropriated comic book images and black-and-white photos with text, Kolding makes it clear(...)

Résumé:
Danish artist and urban activist Jakob Kolding makes collages that ask: "Who built your neighborhood? For whom was it built? Who uses the space?" This is a visual and verbal dialogue on the dense urban landscapes familiar throughout the globe. Through essays, poignant collages of appropriated comic book images and black-and-white photos with text, Kolding makes it clear that urban planning has failed miserably, creating concrete corridors that are veritable holding tanks for the masses. But he also finds the spark of human spirit rising through youth street culture, pop music, and skateboarding. A definite reality check on architecture and urban planning! Essays by Stephen Graham, Simon Marvis, Iain Borden and Doreen Massey.

"Private Places" offers an intimate glimpse into the personal gardens of Chicago residents, exploring how they carved out these quiet spaces of flora and greenery in the cityscape of concrete and brick. Temkin's camera lens captures the lushness and vibrancy of these backyard gardens, roving over the diverse natural and artificial elements contained in each. His images chronicle how gardens are safe havens for these city dwellers, places where they can read, meditate, relax, and enjoy the experience of working with the soil and its fruits. Temkin notes, "The small gardens have bits and pieces of the person who owns them; found objects that are dear to them, keepsakes, statues, and personal items that reveal the person behind it."

Résumé:
As architecture programs throughout the country break out of the classroom and adopt the holistic methods of design/build programs, the need for a textbook that bridges the gap between construction materials and design sensibility is sorely needed. Students must be taught how a choice of material affects the form and look of a structure; they must also learn how inspired design can inject any material with true personality and zeal. Broken into five sections — glass, wood, metals, plastics, and concrete — "Materials for design" makes a thorough study of each material's properties, followed by a series of 10–12 case studies of that material put to imaginative use by today's architects from around the world.

Résumé:
The early twentieth century witnessed a transition from wood to timber construction, from log houses to dimensioned post and beams dressed for frame building. The subsequent development of laminated timber and new joinery techniques made wood a viable alternative to steel and concrete, and led to a number of awe-inspiring structures that captured, and continue to capture, the public imagination. One center of imaginative timber construction has been Switzerland, whose engineers, architects, and carpenters have provided fundamental knowledge and inspiration for builders in wood around the world. Developments in Timber Construction focuses not only on the best timber structures in Switzerland, but also on numerous international projects built by Swiss architects and engineers.

Résumé:
Comprehensive and illuminating, ''Orpheus in the Underworld'' centers on Adorno’s concrete and immediate engagement with musical compositions and their interpretation in the concert hall and elsewhere. Here, Adorno registers his initial encounters with the compositions of the Second Viennese School, when he had yet to integrate them into a broad aesthetics of music. Complementarily essays on Bela Bartók, Jean Sibelius, and Kurt Weill afford insight into his understanding of composers who did not fit neatly into the dialectical schema propounded in the Philosophy of New Music. Additionally, essays on recording and broadcasting show Adorno engaging with these media in a spirit that is no less productive than polemical and focused as sharply on their potentialities as on their shortcomings.

The textures andcolors of human-altered landscapes are endlessly fascinating. Seeing andphotographing this landscape from the air has opened up for me new ways ofcreative expression. Construction sites change by the day, and the light andexposure are never the same. Wood, steel, and concrete relate to each other ininfinite varieties of order and disorder." "Work in progress" is a unique vision of a human-altered landscape.

Résumé:
American homes are typically made of lumber and plywood delivered by a global system of ruthless extraction, or of concrete and steel, which are even worse for the planet. Wood is often the most sustainable material for building, but we need to protect diverse forests as much as we desperately need more houses. Brian Donahue addresses this modern conundrum by documenting his experiences building a timber frame home from the wood growing on his family farm, practicing “worst first” forestry. Through the stories of the trees he used (sugar maple, black cherry, black birch, and hemlock), and some he didn’t (white pine and red oak), the book also explores the history of Americans’ relationship with their forests.

Résumé:
Since Osaka World Expo ’70 highlighted contemporary forms, Japan has been a key player in global architecture. Tadao Ando's geometry put Japanese building on the map, bridging East and West. After his concrete buildings, figures like Kengo Kuma, Shigeru Ban, and Kazuyo Sejima pioneered a more sustainable approach. Younger generations have taken new directions, in harmony with nature, traditional building, and an endless search for forms. Presenting the latest in Japanese building, this book links this unique creativity to Japan's high population density, modern economy, long history, and continual disasters in the form of earthquakes. Accepting ambiguity, constant change, and catastrophe is a key to understanding how Japanese architecture differs from that of Europe or America.

Résumé:
The 21st century faces a radical change in how we produce construction materials – a shift towards cultivating, breeding, raising, farming, or growing future resources. This book presents innovative industrialized production methods for cultivated building materials, like cement grown by bacteria, bricks made of mushroom mycelium, or bamboo fibers as reinforcement for concrete. Spanning from scientific research to product development and architectural application, this book builds a bridge between the academic and the professional world of architecture. The book describes the challenges, strategies, and goals in the first part, followed by a second part on bamboo, A cultivated building material and a number of examples in the third part which form the bridge from cultivated materials to building products.
