Cette dynamique impériale est alimentée au quotidien par mille désirs anodins: l’acquisition d’un véhicule neuf grâce au crédit facile, la consommation de fruits et de légumes exotiques ou hors-saison, l’achat d’un ordinateur plus performant. Des habitudes qui ne sont plus l’apanage des pays dits «développés», mais que les pays non occidentaux adoptent aussi, accélérant et exacerbant à leur tour les inégalités et l’externalisation des conséquences écologiques et sociales de cette logique dévastatrice. L’humanité et la biosphère atteignent aujourd’hui leurs limites et ne pourront bientôt plus fournir l’ailleurs qui nous permet de maintenir ce train de vie à l’origine des crises écologique, économique et politique. Les tentatives de remédier à ces crises pour préserver ce mode de vie se multiplient, mais n’est-ce pas ce dernier qui pose justement problème?

Alternant plans rapprochés et visions plus larges, le dessin de Clément Vuillier joue avec des contrastes extrêmes et des transformations graphiques pour suivre le voyage de cet objet mystérieux à travers le cosmos. La sphère s'approche enfin d'un astre rocailleux, sorte de lune grise et morte en apparence. Pourtant, sous la surface de ce désert minéral, palpitent des pierres précieuses et colorées. Lorsqu'elle a fait le tour de cette lune aux trésors enfouis, la sphère s'arrête, s'ouvre, et déverse une multitude d'autres sphères, versions miniatures d'elle-même qui, au contact de la roche, explosent, laminant le sol, faisant jaillir des volcans de roches, jusqu'à la grande explosion finale, ne laissant derrière elles que des blocs éclatés dérivant en apesanteur. L'astre rocheux n'est plus, ses trésors enfouis non plus et, traversant cet amas de roches brisées, la sphère reprend son chemin vers le coeur mis à nu de l'astéroïde. Elle s'ouvre, s'en empare, avant de reprendre sa course céleste, ne laissant derrière être que des poussières flottant au milieu du vide, comme les ruines d'un monde détruit pour assouvir les besoins d'une civilisation dont nous ne saurons rien.

This book tackles this and other paradoxes created by the surprising power and influence of Third World decolonization on political activism in 1960s Montreal. In a brilliant history of a turbulent time and place, Mills pulls back the curtain on the decade's activists and intellectuals, showing their engagement both with each other and with people from around the world. He demonstrates how activists of different backgrounds and with different political aims drew on ideas of decolonization to rethink the meanings attached to the politics of sex, race, and class and to imagine themselves as part of a broad transnational movement of anti-colonial and anti-imperialist resistance. The temporary unity forged around ideas of decolonization came undone in the 1970s, however, as many were forced to come to terms with the contradictions and ambiguities of applying ideas of decolonization in Quebec. From linguistic debates to labour unions, and from the political activities of citizens in the city's poorest neighbourhoods to its Caribbean intellectuals, this publication is a political tour of Montreal that reconsiders the meaning and legacy of the city's dissident traditions. It is also a fascinating chapter in the history of postcolonial thought.

Successful insertion projects in existing urban areas such as the nineteenth-century ring, the Westelijke Tuinsteden (western garden suburbs), the Bijlmer and North Amsterdam alternate with projects in new urban areas such as IJburg, the Zuidas (South Axis) and Oostelijke Handelskade. What is striking is the diversity of the projects, ranging from the bridge Nesciobrug (Wilkinson Eyre) to IJburg, the new head office of DWR (Architectuurstudio Hertzberger), the Finish House near Bosbaan (Mecanoo) and the operating station Westerkeersluis (LUX Architecten), to housing complexes by well-known firms such as FARO Architekten, Claus en Kaan Architects, De Architekten Cie. and UN Studio. But also projects by Dedato, Evelo Vandenberg and Jef Reintjens. In an introduction, Roemer van Toorn describes what struck the jury during its tour of Amsterdam's latest buildings: the introverted residential environments, neo-historicism, gadget architecture, monumentality and the return of the urban block. With no introduction or commentary of any kind, Parr’s boring postcards are reproduced straight: they are exactly what they say they are, namely boring picture postcards showing boring photographs of boring places … presumably for boring people to buy to send to their boring friends. All of them are shot in Britain, taking us on a boring tour of its motorways, ring roads, traffic interchanges, bus stations, pedestrian precincts, factories, housing estates, airports, caravan sites, convalescent homes and shopping centres. Some attempt to idealize their subjects, only to fail dismally. Others lack any apparent purpose or interest … but the resultant collection of photographic images is wholly compelling. Boring Postcards is multi-layered: a commentary on British architecture, social life and identity, a record of a folk photography which is today being appropriated by the most fashionable photographers (including Parr), an exercise in sublime minimalism … and, above all, a richly comic photographic entertainment
