Résumé:
This book collects snapshots of a world unmistakably our own yet equally strange. Made through Thomas Demand’s renowned practice of constructing, photographing, and destroying meticulous paper models, this series captures minor, everyday moments based on iPhone photographs. Viewed together, they are an inventory of traces – signs of consumption, evidence of people just departed or out of sight, spectres of things left behind. Demand describes the series as a form of Haiku: simple fragments strung together to inspire reflection and help us take stock of our daily lives. Just as they trigger deja vu through their performed, minimal repetition, they ask us to look again, and afresh, to discover an ordinary yet enlightening beauty. This new volume brings together the entirety of Demand’s series to date in an expanded edition interwoven with an extended essay by critic Hal Foster.

Résumé:
This publication looks at Fez, Morocco's famous former capital and today its second-largest city. Based on a recent research program conducted by EPFL's Laboratory Basel (laba), it investigates how these clashes have marked the city's socioeconomic structure and urban fabric, and whether or not it offers alternative and relevant means of human association and community. Given the growing stream of large-scale international investment, the constant enticement of tourism, and a worldwide revival of nationalism, Laba's student's and researchers were looking for tiny cues, nagging doubts, and signs of the fusion between form and life, raising questions about identity, authenticity, tradition, the globalisation of culture, and the use of local resources. Their findings are visualised in the book in striking images, graphics and maps. Students' proposals for architectural interventions addressing these issues are presented through images and plans.

Résumé:
One of the masters of contemporary photography, Lee Friedlander has dedicated his career to the documentation of everyday life in the United States. His images are characterized by a composition that utilizes the urban geometry of storefronts and street signs—and later car windows and telephone poles—as a framing technique. This catalog, published in conjunction with a retrospective organized by the Fundación MAPFRE in Madrid, surveys the wide scope of Friedlander’s career from the 1960s to today. High-quality reproductions of all of the exhibited works are supplemented by text written by curator Carlos Gollonet and photographer Nicholas Nixon. The volume serves as a comprehensive guide to Friedlander’s body of work, with personal insight provided through an interview between Maria Friedlander and gallery director Jeffrey Fraenkel, as well as a chronology of the artist’s life by his grandson Giancarlo T. Roma.

Résumé:
'Nelle miniere di Iglesias / Into the Mines of Iglesias' is the first part of an exploration that focuses on soil, excavations, incisions, mutations, transpositions and silence of Sulcis-Iglesiente, a territory marked by an industrial history. A wandering through time and space of a region «built», transformed, crossed by different types of works, infrastructures, relationships between things. These signs, these scars, are today the distinctive features of an extraordinary mining landscape. A space to discover through visual and textual narration. 'Voyages en Sardaigne' is a collection of unconventional thematic guides on this island in the middle of the Mediterranean. They offer to the reader different ways of observation and restitution of its territory, always characterized by an uncertain temporality: the present and the past merge to build a unique landscape, far from the convulsive setting of the contemporaneity. Photographs by Giaime Meloni.

Résumé:
Described as “a continuous carnival” and “the crossroads of the world,” Times Square is a singular phenomenon: the spot where imagination and veracity intersect. To Marshall Berman, it is also the flashing, teeming, and strangely beautiful nexus of his life. In this remarkable book, Berman takes us on a thrilling illustrated tour of Times Square, revealing a landscape both mythic and real. Interleafing his own recollections with social commentary, he reveals how movies, graphic arts, literature, popular music, television, and, of course, the Broadway theater have reflected Times Square’s voluminous light to illuminate a vast spectrum of themes and vignettes. Berman shows how the square’s distinctive aura finds its source in a stunningly diverse list of performers, writers, and impresarios. He also celebrates the unsung heroes—the artists, engineers, and hucksters behind the square’s landmark signs.

Résumé:
This monograph is the first for David Batchelor's Found Monochromes series. Since 1997, the London-based artist has been photographing single square and rectangle planes of uninterrupted white that he passes as he walks through London and places he visits. The images are informal and impromptu; shot from a uniform distance, the white planes are seen on a variety of backdrops: brick walls, car doors, metal fences and more. They are the backs of signs, number plates that have lost their number, empty billboards or faded messages. This body of work references the once radical tradition of monochrome paintings practiced by Malevich, Rodchenko, Yves Klein, Ad Reinhardt, Ellsworth Kelly and others. Found Monochromes Vol. 1 brings together the largest group of photographs from Batchelor's series, accompanied by a conversation between the philosopher Jonathan Ree and the artist.
