Résumé:
While more conventional art can be tucked neatly away on gallery walls, houses have a much larger footprint. And when a home outlives its most basic function of providing shelter, a decision has to be made as to whether it is ultimately worth saving. Modernist homes like those designed by Paul Rudolph face an additional challenge as products of a stark, concrete-laden brutalist style now seen by many to be cold and uninviting. Photographer Chris Mottalini visited three abandoned Rudolph homes awaiting demolition. His photos present these onetime symbols of opulence and power at their most vulnerable and defeated. Full-color photos show sunlight playing across shattered windows, dusty stairs, and ruined living rooms, presenting a view of modernism that few have seen before.

Louis Kahn' National Assembly building in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, is regarded by many as his greatest masterpiece and one of the wonders of modern architecture. The octagonal main Parliament building is framed by eight hostel blocks--all built in local red brick, lawns and an artificial lake symbolizing the significance of water in Bangladesh. The striking simplicity of the exterior, consisting of only concrete and bands of inlaid marble, is broken up by a variety of recessed geometric shapes which create hollow spaces to allow for sunlight and air to circulate the entire building complex. Grischa Rüschendorf’s stunning architectural photos, some depicting so far unseen areas, invite you to explore the rarely visited building, and how this timeless masterpiece has stood the test of time.

Résumé:
Essays, plans and projects by various artists, including Max Bill, Heinrich Dunst, Helmut Federle, Per Kirkeby, Katarina Fritsch, Erwin Heerich, Gerhard Merz, Gottfried Honegger, Walther Pichler, Ulrich Rückriem, Bernar Venet, Daniel Buren, Christoph Haerle, Peter Wigglesworth, Donald Judd, Markus Lüpertz, Arnulf Rainer, Richard Serra among others showing their ideas for how museums should be constructed. When discussing the increasing number of museums and exhibition spaces for modern art which have come into being in recent years, the deep-seated differences of opinion between architects and artists keep coming to the fore. The discussion seems to be almost exclusively dominated by the point of view of the architect and defined by his/her interests. The needs of the art itself are being widely neglected and the voice of the artist is simply not being heard. Donald Judd, the American sculptor and minimalist artist, once noted that museums are so rarely built on functional lines these days, the trend being more towards the creation of a showpiece for the architect. Why are painters and sculptors not asked for their input? The very obvious question was addressed by the Espace de l’art concret when in 1997, it asked a number of well-known artists to come up with ideas and projects for a museum for concrete art. They were invited to submit their ideal utopian suggestions as well as very concrete and architectural proposals and written statements. These are documented in this publication, supplemented with the material for the collection owned by the Kunsthaus in Bregenz and expanded with an extensive anthology of texts by artists on this subject. The résumé of the contributions presents a searing criticism of contemporary museum architecture by its most important users. Their voice will at last find an ear in the current architectural discussion about the new cathedrals of the post-industrial society.

Résumé:
Rudolf Steiner (1861–1925), founder of the Anthroposophical Society, was also active in the field of architecture and the arts. His designs for the two Goetheanum buildings at Dornach, near Basel, together with the many residential and functional buildings grouped around them have met with great admiration. In his architecture, Steiner sought to realize a form of building which would reflect his sense of spiritualism, and it is his unusual but innovative use of concrete and his expressive timber forms which are of interest to architects today. This book provides a long-awaited overview of the most significant and interesting buildings on the Goetheanum hill. Detail photographs and panoramas in duotone are accompanied by comments by Werner Blaser and an introduction by Walter Kugler, administrator of the Steiner estate.

Résumé:
Tadao Ando is the most revered Japanese architect at work today. Beloved and admired for his powerful, meditative spaces and his sensual and yet refined use of the materials of the modern trade - wood, steel, concrete, glass - Ando's work resonates with profound intelligence, unpretentious elegance, and an almost palpable sense of harmony. "Tadao Ando at Naoshima: art, architecture, nature" showcases the latest work in an on going process of building by Tadao Ando at the Naoshima Island Art Complex. Featured here is Ando's recently completed Chichu Art Museum, an underground facility built on the small island in the Inland Sea of Japan. With respect for the landscape and the traditional use of the land as terraced salt fields, Ando adapted the architecture to the topography, by burying much of the complex volume below the ground.

Résumé:
Most alphabet books for pre-readers and early readers set out to make the somewhat abstract idea of letters as clear and as clearly linked to words as possible. In The Graphic Alphabet, graphic designer David Pelletier has created an alphabet book that aims to explore letters for their beauty and complexity as design elements as well as help teach kids how to read. His "A," for example, stands for "avalanche," and with its normally pointed top tumbling down the right diagonal, the letter doesn't just stand for the avalanche, it becomes the word. Pelletier is equally ingenious throughout. And while this might not be the best book to make the concept of letters concrete for youngsters, it will certainly help instill in them a sense of wonder about letters and words.

Résumé:
"Old materials, new climate: Traditional building materials in a changing world" is an accessible guidebook to understanding historic materials – how they were traditionally made, how they survived the test of time, and how changes in climate are now impacting materials in new ways. Protecting historic buildings from a rapidly changing and unpredictable climate requires an understanding of how climate affects weather and how weather affects the durability of the most widely used traditional materials – wood, adobe, brick, lime, concrete, metal, and paint. This resource examines how gradual and dramatic changes in climate threaten to accelerate normal weathering and presents strategies to safeguard historic materials for future generations. Illustrated case studies explore how weather is affecting materials in specific historic buildings in climate zones in the United States and across the globe.

Résumé:
Detail magazine issue 5 2017 focuses on bioclimatic construction and introduces projects that have developed strategies for dealing with climatic conditions in order to improve the quality of indoor and outdoor spaces. Instead of costly high-tech solutions, we compiled examples that approach regional conditions with carefully planned, low-tech measures to great effect – from the subtropics in Malawi to the glacier region of Norway and Mediterranean Europe. In Hanoi, a tube-style house by Vo Trong Nghia Architects filters strong sunlight through concrete slats, and allows air to circulate between the floors to ventilate its deep, narrow spaces. To protect from monsoon rains, the Dutch firm SchilderScholte developed a prototypical concept for a community center in Bangladesh, that makes use of local bamboo and drains rainwater off wide roof overhangs, which also provide shade.
