Résumé:
The Mexicans Colectivo C733 have found in the ideas of Eladio Dieste a constant source of inspiration: in their a rational approach to the use of materials, their respect for human effort, and their way of understading the project as a perfectly orchestrated symphony. This philosophy has enabled them to build more than fifty projects across Mexico in just five years, in the context of an ambitious government strategy to improve infrastructures and public spaces in vulnerable contexts. Thanks to a millimetric coordinatoin and a shared view of social innovation and sustainability, C733 has managed to turn each intervention into an example of architecture committed to the environment and the community. This issue features a selection of fifteen projects that reflect the diversity, scale, and impact of their work.

Résumé:
Invited to exhibit on the Mauvoisin Dam in Switzerland, Camille Llobet created a photographic series capturing a glacial landscape in transition. Shot on and around the moraines of the Mer de Glace, the images reveal a layered world of rock, ice, and sediment - remnants of a largely vanished glacier. Through diptychs that often exclude the sky and horizon, Llobet invites viewers to re-experience the scale and materiality of this grey-toned terrain. The book also features an in-depth interview with Jean-Paul Felley, in which Llobet discusses her working process, collaboration with geomorphologists, and the choreography of mountain landscapes in flux. This is the 11th artist's publication in conjunction with the yearly summer exhibition in the area of the Mauvoisin Dam in Vallais, Switzerland, curated by Jean-Paul Felley. Design: Roger Willems.

Résumé:
Situated on the shore of the Lake Zurich, Le Corbusier's exhibition pavilion is his last realised design. Based on his Modulor proportional system and at the scale of a single-family home, it demonstrates the potential of prefabricated elements to form a perfect space for art and design. Commissioned in 1960 by Heidi Weber, Zurich-based gallery owner and patron of Le Corbusier the visual artist, this structure in steel and glass represents pivotal aspects of his architectural philosophy and also points to the future. Architects Silvio Schmed and Arthur Ruegg have carefully restored the Pavillon Le Corbusier to its original state, including the reconstruction of missing pieces of furniture and luminaires. This book documents their research and the restored building, featuring previously unpublished historic photographs and documents alongside newly commissioned images by Georg Aerni.

Résumé:
Two-dimensional floor plans, elevations and cross-sections are fundamental to the construction of all buildings. Perspective drawings provide a three-dimensional expression of the architect's ideas. In order to communicate architectural concepts and realize them, drawing that present objects on a reduced scale remain indispensable- for both builders and clients- even in an age of CAD and BIM. This richly illustrated book explores the developmental history of the architectural drawing and in the process provides a comprehensive insight into the fascinating world of this medium of representation. The images it contains are certainly not restricted to austere technical drawings. It repeatedly surprises with highly impressive examples of visual invention that display a genuine artistic quality. It is a convincing plea for ever new ways of drawing architecture and thereby imagining future worlds.

Résumé:
In the forty years since the first iteration of Venice Architecture Biennale, the field of architecture has seen a remarkable change in the role played by exhibition-making. While architecture and display have long been intertwined practices, a rapid proliferation of large-scale perennial exhibitions—particularly in the twenty-first century—has resulted in the biennial / triennial becoming an integral part of our discipline, a new geography of itinerant display that has profoundly altered the contours of architectural thought. Between format, space, and content, what are the various agencies and effects of these events? Biennials / Triennials asks these questions and others of a range of curatorial agents and visits crucial sites of recent exhibitions that reveal what is at stake in the newfound ubiquity of the architectural –ennial.

Résumé:
With a rigorous approach and self-imposed limitations to both scale and composition, Tomma Abts (b. 1967) has reinvigorated painterly abstraction and its relevance within contemporary art. Using a fixed canvas size and a vertical format, Abts deploys basic formal elements such as arcs, circles, planes, and stripes to create powerful works that are at once subtle and eccentric. This extraordinary book, designed in collaboration with the artist herself, is a substantial and deeply insightful treatment of her career to date and features sixty works made over the past decade. Essays not only contextualize Abts’s work within an art-historical framework of methods, process, and style, but also examine her paintings’ philosophical and psychological dimensions and their embodiment of a creative process that transcends the specifics of any particular work.

Whether it glows lustrously from neon, emanates purely from LEDs or radiates with intensity from lasers, this elemental medium, light, fascinates artists and viewers alike. Lust for Light selects works by artists who have used light as a primary or catalyzing agent in the featured pieces. Taking a dynamic approach in its curation, the book features the use of illumination in more traditional gallery forms as well as in three dimensional and large-scale installation pieces. Many of the featured artists are skilled fabricators who have been honing their light-inspired works for years, while others have made stunning pieces through collaborations and daring forays, cross-pollinating their artistic visions with new technologies in the process. Featured artists include Yayoi Kusama, Ivan Navarro, Jennifer Steinkamp, Laddie John Dill, Joanie Lemercier, Massimo Uberti, and more.

Résumé:
Buildings designated brutalist in style were largely built in the 1960s and 1970s, exuding an aura of daring, uncompromising design today. It is the French term "brut,“ meaning raw or unrefined, that lent its name to this particular architectural phenomenon. Vilified for decades as the step-child of modernism, brutalist architecture is now enjoying an astonishing comeback as the latest discovery among digital trendsetters. As well as fascinating users across social networks, brutalism is also inspiring contemporary architecture. Large-scale sculptural forms, coarsely finished materials and floor plans that defy convention merge with contemporary design to generate enthralling new creations. This book offers a sophisticated overview of post-war and contemporary brutalist buildings and of the relationship – in appearance and design, in the grand concepts and the smallest details – between brutalism today and its ancestors.

Résumé:
Across the world, the housing crisis is escalating. Mass migration to cities has led to rapid urbanisation on an unprecedented scale, while the withdrawal of public funding from social housing provision in Western countries, and widening income inequality, have further compounded the situation. In response to this context, forward-thinking architects are taking the lead with a collaborative approach. By partnering with allied fields, working with residents, developing new forms of housing, and leveraging new funding systems and policies, they are providing strategic leadership for what many consider to be our cities’ most pressing crisis. Amidst growing economic and health disparities, this issue of AD asks how housing projects, and the design processes behind them, might be interventions towards greater social equity, and how collaborative work in housing might reposition the architectural profession at large.
