Résumé:
City Riffs traces the changing perspectives of urban design within an ever-changing global context. Moving between sixteen cities, the book also considers trans-disciplinary aspects of urbanism; formal and informal growth in Kumasi and Caracas, post-colonial structures in New Delhi and Prague, post-urban phenomena in Detroit and Brussels; cultural transitions in Antwerp and Salzburg; the changing nature of place in Seoul and Mostar; and new ecological realities in New York and Rome. Urbanism is viewed as the production of space-integrating aspects of design, ecology, and engineering, as well as other in? uences on urban cognition such as social, economical, and psychological interactions.

Résumé:
The spring exhibition in the Architekturzentrum Wien is devoted to a history of ideas of appropriating land in urban space. Curator Elke Krasny presents historical and contemporary case studies that illustrate bottom-up urban development in Chicago, Leipzig, Vienna, Bremen, New York, Paris, Hong Kong, Istanbul, Porto Alegre, Havanna or Quito. She offers an overview of self-organised, collective, informal movements and of the spaces they create. Hands-On Urbanism presents a different history of urbanism that puts pressing questions to architects and planners and enquires about how we use resources. What can be learned from this urban history from below and how do architects operate within these processes?

Working from home, online shopping, undertourism: the disruptive upheavals caused by the COVID-19 pandemic challenge architecture and urban planning. Intense attention has been paid to Detroit as a site of urban crisis. This crisis, however, has not only yielded the massive devaluation of real estate that has so often been noted; it has also yielded an explosive production of seemingly valueless urban property that has facilitated the imagination and practice of alternative urbanisms. Résumé:
Intense attention has been paid to Detroit as a site of urban crisis. This crisis, however, has not only yielded the massive devaluation of real estate that has so often been noted; it has also yielded an explosive production of seemingly valueless urban property that has facilitated the imagination and practice of alternative urbanisms. The first sustained study of Detroit’s alternative urban cultures, The Unreal Estate Guide to Detroit initiates a new focus on Detroit as a site not only of urban crisis but also of urban possibility. The guide documents art and curatorial practices, community and guerilla gardens, urban farming and forestry, cultural platforms, living archives, evangelical missions, temporary public spaces, intentional communities, furtive monuments, outsider architecture, and other work made possible by the ready availability of urban space in Detroit. The guide poses these spaces as “unreal estate”: urban territory that has slipped through the free- market economy and entered other regimes of value, other contexts of meaning, and other systems of use. The appropriation of this territory in Detroit, the Guide suggests, offers new perspectives on what a city is and can be, especially in a time of urban crisis.

Résumé:
To stop. A gesture of resistance in a world primarily designed to encourage work, consumerism, perpetual growth and efficiency. Stopping as an urban practice. In cities where pauses and idleness within specific sites are increasingly discouraged, stopping emerges as a space of rupture, pleasure, intimacy, or simply necessity and rest. In a project begun in 2015 in Mexico City and further developed in Montreal in 2017, Jean-François Prost explores these realities for their contrasts with the incessant movement of people and related structures in contemporary cities where sometimes even self-constructions of time and space are forbidden.
