Résumé:
The model is one of the oldest means of architectural representation and comes in an extravagant variety of forms, from miniaturizations of reality mesmerizing in their exactness to wildly energetic sculptural representations. "Modeling Messages: The Architect and the Model" is a study of the contemporary model, American and international, and its myriad uses in architectural practice. Among the illustrations are inventive designs by architects Peter Eisenman, Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, and Rem Koolhaas. Author Karen Moon discusses the meaning of the model for the architect, the relationship between model and building, and the impact of scale. She also explores how architects use models for presentation and the creation of a public image. In addition, she focuses on the practice of model making: the relationship between the architect and the maker; the materials and new technologies that are transforming model making.

Résumé:
The third volume in this exciting series presenting young architecture and design talents, ArchiLab's Earth Buildings turns its focus to building with the land. Projects from thirty of the most innovative young practices of today—including Field Operations, Tom Leader, NOX, Servo, Vicente Guallart, and Kengo Kuma—confront and offer proposals and solutions to issues such as dwindling natural resources, land engineering, the city as ecosystem, and the sensitive development of brown sites. Presented through extensive plans, computer renderings, and photographs, buildings and large-scale schemes reveal an almost infinite array of breathtaking ideas for the future, an inspiration for a generation of designers, practitioners, and policymakers. Essays by international critics Frédéric Migayrou, Bart Lootsma, Manuel Gausa, and others consider the earth's economy and suggest how contemporary architects might best and most responsibly respond to our fragile planet in a technology-driven age.

"Inside design now" looks at American design in the new millennium, providing a fascinating tour of cutting-edge trends in architecture, interiors, landscape, fashion, graphics, and new media. Featuring eighty emerging and established designers – including 2 x 4, Mike Mills, Peter Eisenman, Fuse Project, Tod Machover, Paula Scher, Jennifer Siegal, and Isaac Mizrahi – "Inside design now" illustrates the most innovative and provocative thinking in design today. Essays explore the role of the designer in today’s culture, contemporary ideas of beauty and functionality, and what the future holds in the realm of design. Sensuous materials, lush patterns, and exquisite details come together with new technologies, pop imagery, and fresh approaches to scale, colour, and construction in the works reproduced in this volume. This book accompanies the exhibition of the same name at the Cooper Hewitt Museum of National Design beginning in April 2003.

Résumé:
In this sequel to her enduring bestseller ''Hope in the Dark'', Solnit surveys a world that has changed dramatically since the year 1960. Despite the forces seeking to turn back the clock on history, change is not a possibility; it is an inevitability. The changes amount to nothing less than dismantling an old civilization and building a new one, whose newness is often the return of the old ways and wisdoms. In this rising worldview, interconnection is a core idea and value. But because the transformation is obscured within a longer arc of history, its scale is seldom recognized. While the white nationalist and authoritarian backlash drives individualism and isolation, this new world embraces antiracism, feminism, a more expansive understanding of gender, environmental thinking, scientific breakthroughs, and Indigenous and non-Western ideas, pointing toward a more interconnected, relational world.

Résumé:
Picking up where his best-selling City of Bits left off, Mitchell argues that we must extend the definitions of architecture and urban design to encompass virtual places as well as physical ones, and interconnection by means of telecommunication links as well as by pedestrian circulation and mechanized transportation systems. He proposes strategies for the creation of cities that not only will be sustainable but will make economic, social, and cultural sense in an electronically interconnected and global world. The new settlement patterns of the twenty-first century will be characterized by live/work dwellings, 24-hour pedestrian-scale neighborhoods rich in social relationships, and vigorous local community life, complemented by far-flung configurations of electronic meeting places and decentralized production, marketing, and distribution systems. Neither digiphile nor digiphobe, Mitchell advocates the creation of e-topias--cities that work smarter, not harder.

Résumé:
In "Plant life", Rosetta S. Elkin explores the procedures of afforestation, the large-scale planting of trees in otherwise treeless environments, including grasslands, prairies, and drylands. Elkin reveals that planting a tree can either be one of the ultimate offerings to thriving on this planet, or one of the most extreme perversions of human agency over it. Using three supracontinental case studies-scientific forestry in the American prairies, colonial control in Africa's Sahelian grasslands, and Chinese efforts to control and administer territory-Elkin explores the political implications of plant life as a tool of environmentalism. By exposing the human tendency to fix or solve environmental matters by exploiting other organisms, this work exposes the relationship between human and plant life, revealing that afforestation is not an ecological act: rather, it is deliberately political and distressingly social.

Since the 1500s, scientists have documented the plants and fungi that grew around them, organizing the specimens into collections. Known as herbaria, these archives helped give rise to botany as its own scientific endeavor. "Herbarium" is a fascinating enquiry into this unique field of plant biology, exploring how herbaria emerged and have changed over time, who promoted and contributed to them, and why they remain such an important source of data for their new role: understanding how the world’s flora is changing. Barbara Thiers, director of the William and Lynda Steere Herbarium at the New York Botanical Garden, also explains how recent innovations that allow us to see things at both the molecular level and on a global scale can be applied to herbaria specimens, helping us address some of the most critical problems facing the world today.

"Mother's Land" is a collection of dioramas, of unscripted scenes in which we see a shifting 2010s China unfold before our eyes. It is, also, the result of a long, introspective journey that led Daniel Lee Postaer in search of a missing part of his identity—the one left behind by his grandparents who, more than fifty years earlier and fleeing the communist regime, could take along a daughter, but were forced to abandon another. In search of this "other half," Postaer lived in China in the early 2000s, and returned several times in the second half of the 2010s, becoming a first-hand witness to the country’s contemporary developments. In an all-encompassing portrait of urban China, in large-scale compositions embracing a multitude of characters and scenes, "Mother’s Land" shows us a country in the throes of economic and social transformations.

Résumé:
The vast majority of architects cut their teeth designing small-scale additions to private homes. Extensions can be added to roofs, gardens, and underneath buildings or can even be strapped on to the sides. Following a brief introduction, the book is divided into chapters featuring 40 projects that extend spaces up, down, to the rear, to the side, on the roof, internally, and outdoors. Each case study explains how the architects faced design challenges at the same time as meeting their clients' needs. Details covered include choice of materials, planning issues, time, and cost. The book also raises issues that clients ought to consider when commissioning an architect to design an extension, from developing a brief to the finished product. At the end of the book there is practical advice for anyone thinking about extending their own property.
