Résumé:
This book sheds a new light on one of the most important and probably oldest topivs of European urban architecture : the street. Taking Genoa and Berlin as typological examples, a toal of 22 individual house plans were drawn up in the context of an experiment in design ; each represents a fresh, creative planning possibility in view of the current redensification of urban space. The publication documents the assignments and results of a European project carried out among students of architecture in Postdam and Genoa under the overall diection of Klaus Theo Brenner. The resulting designs are complementaring one to another to generate an image of the street which is, in the tradition of the " strada nuova " in Genoa, developing to a magnificient project for the ideal city.

Résumé:
This publication is an urgent response to the radical changes in contemporary architecture and the built environment witnessed in the twenty-first century. Characteristically polemic, incisive and energetic, these essays explore pressing questions of architectural and urban design, and critical issues of public space and participation. From New York to New Orleans, the Amazon to Jerusalem, Sorkin brings a critical eye to bear on a sweeping range of subjects. Whether castigating the sorry performance of the architectural avant-garde, considering the nature of place in globalized culture, or providing mock instructions for entering a high-security environment, these writings make a powerful and provocative case for architecture and urban design to re-engage with the lives and societies from which they have become increasingly detached.

Résumé:
The High Line, a new park atop an ele-vated rail structure on Manhattan’s West Side, is among the most innovative urban reclamation projects in memory. The story of how it came to be is a remarkable one: two young citizens with no prior experience in planning and development collaborated with their neighbors, elected officials, artists, local business owners, and leaders of burgeoning movements in horticulture and landscape architecture to create a park celebrated worldwide as a model for creatively designed, socially vibrant, ecologically sound public space. In this book, David and Hammond tell how they relied on skill, luck, and good timing: a crucial court ruling, an inspiring design contest, the enthusiasm of Mayor Bloomberg, the concern for urban planning issues following 9/11.

Résumé:
Until recently, the construction of the cityscape tended to entail the subjugation of nature and landscape; the consequences of this approach have been climate change, water shortages and the loss of biodiversity. The twenty-first-century city must abide by a new model that deploys creative, sustainable solutions and a more holistic approach to urban development. Return of Landscape probes the future of the city, not only as a living space but also as the creative center of tomorrow’s society. Through spectacular aerial photographs by Alex S. MacLean, it compares the two extreme examples of Las Vegas and Venice--two very different cities currently struggling with similar ecological problems. In addition to these case studies, the book includes articles by leading experts in architecture and urban development.

Résumé:
We are in the midst of redesigning the world and all its systems as we witness the biggest mass movement of people, goods, factories, frenzied finance and ideas in history. Vast fl ows make the new norm nomadic. Yet there is a yearning for belonging, distinctiveness and identity as the ‘anytime, anyplace, anywhere’ phenomenon enabled by digitization is changing how we interact with space, place and time. Old certainties are crumbling and systems are breaking at escalating speed. Apprehension is in the air as we invent a different kind of city. This is the Civic City. It tries to find a pathway through the major faultlines, dilemmas and potentials of our time – shared lives, inequality, environmental distress and urban vitality. This is a place where we reinvent anchorage, an urban commons, connection, but also possibility and inspiration. In this new ground-breaking book, the inventor of the Creative City concept helps us navigate the evolving urban landscapes and its potential.

"Walkscapes" deals with strolling as an architecture of landscape, with walking as an autonomous form of art, a primary act in the symbolic transformation of the territory, an aesthetic instrument of knowledge and a physical transformation of the "negotiated" space, which is converted into an urban intervention. From primitive nomadism to Dada and Surrealism, from the Lettrist to the Situationist International, and from Minimalism to Land Art, this book narrates the perception of landscape through a history of the traversed city.

Résumé:
It is assumed that every inch of the world has been explored and charted; that there is nowhere new to go. But perhaps it is the everyday places around us—the cities we live in—that need to be rediscovered. What does it feel like to find the city’s edge, to explore its forgotten tunnels and scale unfinished skyscrapers high above the metropolis? Explore Everything reclaims the city, recasting it as a place for endless adventure. Plotting expeditions from London, Paris, Berlin, Detroit, Chicago, Las Vegas and Los Angeles, Bradley L. Garrett has evaded urban security in order to experience the city in ways beyond the boundaries of conventional life. He calls it ‘place hacking’: the recoding of closed, secret, hidden and forgotten urban space to make them realms of opportunity.
