Résumé:
Usually associated with Mies and Le Corbusier, the Modern Movement was instrumental in advancing new technologies of construction in architecture, including the use of glass, steel, and reinforced concrete. Renowned historian Kenneth Frampton offers a bold look at this crucial period, focusing on architects less commonly associated with the movement in order to reveal the breadth and complexity of architectural modernism. ''The other Modern movement'' profiles nineteen architects, each of whom consciously contributed to the evolution of a new architectural typology through a key work realized between 1922 and 1962. Frampton’s account offers new insights into iconic buildings like Eileen Gray’s E-1027 House in France and Richard Neutra’s Kaufmann House in Palm Springs, California, as well as lesser-known works such as Antonin Raymond’s Tokyo Golf Club and Alejandro de la Sota’s Maravillas School Gymnasium in Madrid. Foregrounding the ways that these diverse projects employed progressive models, advanced new methods in construction techniques, and displayed a new sociocultural awareness, Frampton shines a light on the rich legacy of the Modern Movement and the enduring potential of the unfinished modernist project.

Résumé:
An unusual journey between Breslau and Dessau, from the World Cultural Heritage of the Centennial Hall (1913) to the World Cultural Heritage of Bauhaus dating from the twenties : and there are many highpoints of modern architecture in-between—in Görlitz, Dresden-Hellerau, Leipzig or Chemnitz, for example. Almost all the great modernist architects are gathered together here, from Hans Poelzig and Henry van de Velde to Heinrich Tessenow, Richard Riemerschmid, Hans Scharoun, Erich Mendelsohn and even Walter Gropius. But the focus is also on the cities themselves; at a very early date, their progressive building councillors thought hard about European urban development — about buildings ranging from striking tower blocks to top-quality mass housing. This publication illustrates an important chapter of architectural history in an original, condensed-format travel guide.

Résumé:
The second in a series of publications on mid-century architecture in the Buffalo Books series, this book commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery extension, a black modernist box, designed by Gordon Bunshaft, set adjacent to the original Neoclassical gallery. Bunshaft’s ideas were progressive in the post-war era and anticipated transformations finally emerging today. He once said “…the building industry, as a whole, not just the architectural aspects of it, is a slow moving device…but eventually we will have pre-fabricated, light constructed, rapidly constructed, clean buildings.”

The iconic twentieth-century architect Marcel Breuer was a prolific designer of residential architecture, which is often overshadowed by his early renown as a Bauhaus furniture maker and his large-scale projects. "Breuer’s bohemia" surveys the houses he designed in Connecticut and Massachusetts from the 1950s through the ’70s, many of which were commissioned by a few culturally progressive clients—chiefly Rufus and Leslie Stillman and Andrew and Jamie Gagarin—who coalesced around him into a dynamic social circle. Included in this scene were prominent cultural figures such as Alexander Calder, Arthur Miller, Francine du Plessix Gray, Philip Roth, and William Styron, and more, marking a unique intersection of postwar architecture, art, and letters.

Based on unlimited access to the Frank Lloyd Wright Archives in Taliesin, Arizona, the collection spans the length and breadth of Wright’s projects, both realized and unrealized, from his early Prairie Houses, through the Usonian concept home, epitomized by Fallingwater, the Tokyo years, his progressive “living architecture” buildings, right through to later schemes like the Guggenheim Museum, New York, and fantastic visions for a better tomorrow in the “living city.” Author Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer, who served as Wright’s apprentice during the 1950s, discusses recent research on Wright and gives his own insights on these game-changing buildings.

Résumé:
Architects Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos from the Amsterdam office UNStudio are undeniable stars on the international architectural scene. In their interdisciplinary united net of experts they promote creative and integral design processes, aiming to further the progressive path of contemporary architecture. The outcome is dynamic buildings like the Magnet Resonance Institute at the University of Utrecht or the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart; buildings of extreme conceptual and technical complexity and conviction that also offer a rare level of architectural experience. Surely one of the office’s qualities is the fact that a sense of atmosphere and beauty is never neglected in these buildings and objects designed with artistic fervour.

Résumé:
An explosion of little architectural magazines in the 1960s and 1970s instigated a radical transformation in architectural culture, as the magazines acted as a site of innovation and debate. Clip, Stamp, Fold takes stock of seventy little magazines from this period that were published in over a dozen cities. Coined in the early twentieth century to designate progressive literary journals, the term little magazine was remobilized during the 1960s to grapple with the contemporary proliferation of independent architectural periodicals. In addition to short-lived radical magazines, this book includes pamphlets and building instruction manuals along with professional magazines that experienced moments of littleness, influenced by the graphics and intellectual concerns of their self-published contemporaries.
