Résumé:
This book presents a detailed history of Katsura, the seventeenth-century imperial palace in Kyoto, Japan, that is a pivotal work of Japanese architecture. First revealed to the modern architectural world by Bruno Taut, the great German architect, in the early twentieth century, Katsura stunned and then excited the architectural community of the West. Le Corbusier and Walter Gropius, pillars of the modernist establishment, were fascinated by Katsura`s "modernity." They saw in its orthogonal and modular spaces, devoid of decoration, clear parallels to contemporary modernism, going so far as to proclaim Katsura a "historical" example of modernity. This book documents the palace in detail, combining newly commissioned photographs, detailed drawings, archival material and historical analysis. Essays by Francesco Dal Co, Walter Gropius, Arata Isozaki, Manfred Speidel, Kenzo Tange and Bruno Taut.

Résumé:
Nightclubs and discothèques are hotbeds of contemporary culture. Since the 20th century, they have been centers of the avant-garde that question the established codes of social life and experiment with different realities, merging interior and furniture design, graphics and art with sound, light, fashion and special effects to create a modern Gesamtkunstwerk. "Night Fever: Designing Club Culture 1960-Today" is the first book to examine the design history of the nightclub, with examples ranging from the Italian clubs of the 1960s created by members of the Radical Design group and the legendary Studio 54 where Andy Warhol was a regular; to the Palladium in New York designed by Arata Isozaki and the more recent concepts by architecture firm OMA for a new Ministry of Sound in London. Featuring film stills and vintage photographs, posters, flyers and fashion, "Night Fever" takes the reader on a fascinating journey through a world of glamour, subculture and the search for the night that never ends.

Résumé:
From the time of its invention, photography has enabled artists not only to capture the world around them but also to create worlds of their own. "Utopia/Dystopia" investigates how artists from the late 19th century to the present have used photographic fragments or techniques to represent political, social, or cultural states of utopia or dystopia. Artists have employed a number of strategies to this end, such as cutting, fragmenting, and puncturing images as well as reassembling those culled from ready-made materials or giving a subject multiple exposures. The resulting photographs, photocollages, photomontages, and other creations question the validity of seamless pictorial images, and attempt to dismantle the notion of photography as an objective medium. This publication features approximately forty-five exemplary works by artists such as Herbert Bayer, John Heartfield, Hannah Hoch, Arata Isozaki, El Lissitzky, Carter Mull, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Vik Muniz, Man Ray, Okanoue Toshiko, and many others.

Résumé:
The design of infrastructural networks—that is, roads, railways and any system that enables flow within a structure such as a city—is among urban design's foremost tasks. Around the globe, the awareness of enhanced infrastructure fluidity as a catalyst for economic development is rising. The Landscape of Contemporary Infrastructure investigates how infrastructure design determines the organization and flow of the inhabited landscape—as an agency of enhanced mobility, as a design feature contributing to the character of a city and as a sound theoretical approach to a positive experience of collective space. These issues are explored in four chapters that catalogue these approaches, each chapter buttressed with key projects from the world's most important designers in this field, including Arata Isozaki, Paul Andreu, Xaveer De Geyter, Jean Nouvel and Ricardo Bofill. The authors demonstrate how the creative potential of architecture, landscape architecture and urban design is essential to the effective flow of infrastructural networks.

Résumé:
This catalogue to the CCA's exhibition presents four of the most representative and best documented of the artificial excavation projects: an urban design scheme for Cannaregio West in Venice (1978); a housing project near Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin (1980-1981, partially realized 1982-1986); a design for the University Art Museum at California State University, Long Beach (1986); and Chora L Works (1985-1986), a garden for the Parc de La Villette in Paris designed in collaboration with Jacques Derrida. Each project is presented through the architect's drawings and models, over 200 images in all, more than 150 of them in colour, most from the collections of the Canadian Centre for Architecture. Each project sequence begins with a theoretical text by Eisenman, then goes on to a project history describing the site and explaining Eisenman's design strategy. The unprecedented publication of complete series of conceptual drawings not only illustrates Eisenman's design process in detail, but also traces the transformation, through drawing and model making, of his architectural discourse. With essays by Alan Balfour, Yve-Alain Bois, Jean-François Bédard, Jean-Louis Cohen, Kurt W. Forster, K. Michael Hays, Arata Isozaki, and Fredric Jameson.
