Résumé:
For centuries, architectural theory, discourse and agency have been based on diurnal and solar paradigms. References to night in Vitruvius’s De architectura are few, and the same absence is notable in Renaissance treatises by Alberti or Palladio. It was not until the 19th and 20th centuries that the invention and institutionalization of artificial light in private and public spaces gradually transformed conceptions of night in the architectural discipline. This volume offers the first attempt at a nocturnal history of architecture. What emerges from the studies is the thesis that the identity of human beings—across time and their domestic, professional and cultural spaces—is powerfully determined by the parameters of nighttime. By analyzing and studying "night scenes," this book reveals how the night is a laboratory for the development of new forms of conceptualizing space and, ultimately, of living.

DISTIGMO is an independent magazine and publisher that emerged through a method of trial and error—also the title and theme of its inaugural issue. Trial and Error focuses on early design stages, experiments, mistakes, and unexpected turns, aligning with the magazine's core purpose: to adopt an open and non-linear process in the development of its issues. Each issue reinforces our central concept through a circular approach and the identity of the magazine is evolving with the publication of each issue. Therefore, contributors are essential to DISTIGMO's identity and voice. The articles, essays, sketches and photographs that compose each issue enrich and guide the magazine's direction and overall narrative.

Résumé:
a+u’s October issue features the recent works of the highly acclaimed Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira. Active since the late 1960s, Alvaro Siza continues to build across different regions of the world, and each work of architecture reflects consciousness of the collective values of a place. This sensitivity is evident in different scales and material used, such as Clay Pavilion in Mexico, which recalls traditional construction techniques, and Renovation of the Manor Dos Magalhães, which sculpturally integrates new landscaped terraces with the critical function of the building, yet makes no unnecessary changes to the façade of the ruin. In addition to 16 recent works, architect and writer Nuno Grande composes a “poem to Porto,” which highlights 5 of the most influential projects by Alvaro Siza in his beloved city.

Résumé:
In recent decades models have made a contribution to architectural discourse that should not be underestimated. Christophe Van Gerrewey considers the models in OMA’s oeuvre and ascertains that OMA’s models always take on a life of their own, turning into ‘a realisation of what architecture promises, yet can never attain itself’. For example, the two plaster models of the Très Grande Bibliothèque in Paris afforded new insights into a space that can be read both as mass and as counter-mass, while the model of the cruise terminal in Zeebrugge exemplified the power of the iconic form. OASE 84 devotes considerable attention to (architectural) models that play an important part in the work of various artists as well, like in the work of Mike Kelley and Thomas Demand. These models are hardly ever meant to be realised on a different scale elsewhere; they work with the dualistic connotations of the model directly. Although the two disciplines have markedly different motives for using models, we are confident that the cross-pollination brought about here will generate novel insights about the model’s significance and possibilities. With contributions by Jacob Bil, Adam Caruso, Thomas Demand, Job Floris, Kersten Geers, Christophe Van Gerrewey, Anne Holtrop, Christian Hubert, Junya Ishigami, Krijn de Koning, Véronique Patteeuw, Bas Princen, Hans Teerds, Milica Topalovic and Stefaan Vervoort OASE is an independent, international journal published in Dutch and English that features architecture, urban design and landscape design. Each issue is devoted to a topical theme and thus makes a significant contribution to international discourse within these fields. OASE is published three times a year
