Résumé:
Author Christopher Beorkrem shows how material performance drives the digital fabrication process and determines technique. He has recreated and dissected thirty-six of the most progressive works of architecture of the last few years, with perspectives from the designers so that you can learn from the successes and failures of each project. Including step-by-step diagrams and using consistent language and the simplest construction techniques, he identifies the important characteristics of each material, including connection types, relative costs, deformation, color, texture, finish, dimensional properties, durability, and weathering and waterproofing to link the design outcomes to form. The book is divided into five parts by material – wood, metal, concrete, hybrids, and recycled – to help you reference construction techniques for the fabrication machines you have on-hand.

Résumé:
The exhilarating and at times unsettling work featured in this book suggests an alternative view of natural processes and ecosystems and their relationships to human society and architecture. R's Mosquito Bottleneck house in Trinidad uses a skin that actually attracts mosquitoes and moves them through the building, while keeping them separate from the occupants. In his building designs the architect Philippe Rahm draws the dank air from the earth and the gasses and moisture from our breath to define new forms of spatial experience. In his Underground House, Mollier House, and Omnisport Hall, Rahm forces us to consider the odor of soil and the emissions from our body as the natural context of a future architecture. [Cero 9]'s design for the Magic Mountain captures excess heat emitted from a power generator in Ames, Iowa, to fuel a rose garden that embellishes the industrial site and creates a natural mountain rising above the city's skyline. Subnature looks beyond leed ratings, green roofs, and solar panels toward a progressive architecture based on a radical new conception of nature.

Résumé:
European emigrés have been changing the face of modern American architecture for decades. Winka Dubbeldam surely belongs to that long list of practitioners. Working across scales — from a New York skyscraper to a rural house — the Dutch-born architect has established herself as one of the most provocative figures in the field by seamlessly integrating function and form, technology and comfort, city and home. Folded glass facades, intelligent building cores, and interactive environments highlight the work of her progressive, process-based studio/laboratory, Archi-Tectonics. As much resource as monograph, "Archi-Tectonics Index" explores Dubbeldam's intense, research-laden approach to over twenty projects, including the highly acclaimed From HardWare to SoftForm exhibition, Aida Hair Salon, and Gipsy Trail Residence. Incisive essays by Detlef Mertins, Javier Barreiro Cavestany, and Michael Speaks complement lush photographs, informative diagrams, and her compelling designs.

Established in 1988, Shuhei Endo Architect Institute has long been actively pursuing escaping gravity’s constraints through its work and use of cutting-edge technology. However, despite being labelled a progressive architect, Endo Shuhei is careful to remain sensitive to the functions and social qualities demanded of his buildings. Included in this comprehensive monograph are diverse critical essays by, among others, Aaron Betsky, Kenneth Frampton, Kazukiyo Matsuba and Hiroyuki Suzuki, plus an in-depth interview with Frederic Migayrou. More than 30 projects are also detailed, including his signature Bubbletechture, Springtechture and Gravitechture designs.

Résumé:
This monograph presents 39 complex structures by the Princeton University professor and structural engineer Guy Nordenson. The body of work, developed with architects and artists including Raimund Abraham, Henry N. Cobb, Steven Holl, Michael Maltzan, Richard Meier, SANAA, and many others, presents Nordenson’s contributions to a progressive collaborative design process as both engineer and designer. The structures in this volume span twenty-eight years, from his early work with Paul Weidlinger, to his formation of the New York office of Ove Arup & Partners, through the first 13 years since the 1998 establishment of his current independent practice, Guy Nordenson and Associates.
