Résumé:
This monograph highlights the global works of Vinoly. For nearly half a century Rafael Vinoly has been driven by the belief that the responsibility of architecture is to elevate the public realm. While his early work in Argentina transformed the landscape of his native country, his first major international projects - the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York and the International Forum in Tokyo - established Vinoly as a global presence in architecture, whose buildings sustain a structural originality that transcends passing fads. This monograph features a chronological sampling of Vinoly's best work in the United States, Latin America, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. The large and small-scale projects encompass courthouses, private residences, athletic facilities, performing arts centres, museums and educational buildings. Illustrated with photographs, plans and drawings, and accented by Vinoly's personal reflection on his career, this volume brings together the achievements of one of today's most internationally acclaimed architects.

Résumé:
This book examines the possibilities for scaling design solutions to address global warming. Global warming poses new challenges to the architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design communities. The immediate response has been a turn toward a host of energy-saving technologies. What has rarely been addressed, however, is the problem of scale. How can designers make sure that global solutions do not come at the expense of local cultures and environments? By placing human rational, emotional, technological, and social needs at the center of our environmental concerns, this book proposes a new global design initiative. The aim is to develop a language of design that can create proximity between individual responsibility and the current global environmental crisis. These featured projects showcase leading-edge design innovations at multiple scales. Global Design directors Peder Anker, Louise Harpman, and Mitchell Joachim discuss various ways in which design can reformat the unfortunate separation between humans and the natural world.

Résumé:
Published to accompany the first large-scale retrospective of Alighiero Boetti's work outside Italy in over a decade, this volume covers all periods of Boetti's broad oeuvre, including early sculptural experiments associated with the Arte Povera movement, conceptual and ephemeral projects of the 1970s and the monumental embroideries and tapestries he fabricated up to his death. This illustrated catalogue is structured as a typology of the artist's body of work rather than a chronological progression. Essays by curators from the Reina Sofia, Madrid, the Tate Modern, London and The Museum of Modern Art, New York, address recurrent themes in Boetti's work such as travel and geography, time, order and disorder and singularity and multitude, while contributions by scholars examine his early influences and his relationship to the cultural, political, and social spheres of Italy and Afghanistan in the 1970s and 1980s. This volume celebrates the material diversity, conceptual complexity and visual beauty of Boetti's work, proving that he is one of the most important and influential artists of his generation.

Résumé:
In the 1970s, a void opened at the heart of architecture. In hotels, offices, public buildings, and commercial centers, the atrium emerged globally to challenge the modernist legacies of form and function, altering the pattern and experience of cities. While often appearing at vast scale and to striking effect, the atrium also became omnipresent and mundane. In this lively critique, Charles Rice charts the atrium's appearance in the 1970s and its development through the 1980s, as it accompanied profound shifts in the discipline and practice of architecture. During this period, architectural practice especially in the United States and United Kingdom was changing rapidly, due in part to the manifold effects of deregulation. All aspects of the way buildings were designed, developed, regulated, built, managed, and occupied were being reshaped. A practice guided by the progressive tenets of modernism was being turned into a professional service fully integrated within neoliberal social and economic imperatives. As Rice shows, the atrium gives this story a distinct spatial and material figure, one that offers an inside view of architecture in transformation.

Résumé:
''Resisting eviction'' centres tenant organizing in its investigation of gentrification, eviction and the financialization of rental housing. Andrew Crosby argues that racial discrimination, property relations and settler colonialism inform contemporary urban (re)development efforts and impacts affordable housing loss. How can the City of Ottawa aspire to become ''North America’s most liveable mid-sized city'' while large-scale, demolition-driven evictions displace hundreds of people and destroy a community? Troubling discourses of urban liveability, revitalization and improvement, Crosby examines the deliberate destruction of home—domicide—and tenant resistance in the Heron Gate neighbourhood in Ottawa, on unceded Algonquin land. Heron Gate is a large rental neighbourhood owned by one multi-billion-dollar real estate investment firm. Around 800 people—predominantly lower-income, racialized households—have been demovicted and displaced from the neighbourhood since 2016, leading to the emergence of the Herongate Tenant Coalition to fight the evictions and confront the landlord-developer. This case study is meticulously documented through political activist ethnography, making this book a brilliant example of ethical engagement and methodological integrity.

Résumé:
Since starting their practice in 1986, Iranian-born, American-educated sisters Gisue and Mojgan Hariri have earned widespread praise for their ambitious body of work. Their up-to-the-minute recasting of classical modernist principles has made them a source of continuing inspiration to design students and professionals alike. Over the course of recent years, the Hariris' portfolio has expanded from small-scale commissions to widely celebrated projects, including the much lauded "Digital House" and the first house to be completed at The Houses at Sagaponac, the ambitious Hamptons development. Among the projects featured in Hariri & Hariri: Houses—illustrated in plans, drawings, and splendid full-color photography—are a new house for the AQUA development in Miami Beach; spectacular urban renovations in New York City; and magnificent new houses across the country, as well as international projects, all of which demonstrate the ability of the Hariris to combine modernist rigor with what New Yorker architecture critic Paul Goldberger identified as an "understanding of the patterns of everyday life."

Résumé:
This new monograph from TC Cuadernos brings us closer to the recent work of Portuguese architect Nuno Brandão Costa, one of the most interesting contemporary voices in Portuguese architecture. This publication follows issue 90, which we released in 2009 featuring his early works, and now covers a period of intense creative activity and professional consolidation from 2010 to 2023. It is a meticulous journey through fifteen selected works that demonstrate the maturity reached by this architect over the last decade. The works span various typologies and scales, from single-family homes to large complexes. Projects such as the Campanhã Intermodal Terminal and the rehabilitation of the S. João de Deus neighborhood are studied with special attention, showing how Brandão Costa has expanded his field of action towards large-scale urban projects without losing the artisanal quality of the details that characterize his most intimate residential interventions. In all cases, his conceptual coherence, the harmonious relationship of his works with the landscape, and especially the masterful use of elementary geometries, refined volumes, and care for constructive details stand out.

Résumé:
Traditional Japanese architecture is characterized by the working of natural materials such as wood, earth, and rock into remarkable structures. This precious cultural heritage has been preserved over the years in the form not only of the buildings themselves, but also of scale models created during repairs and other occasions. This book turns to those astoundingly precise models to give a historical overview of the artistry and craftsmanship handed down through the generations in buildings of wide-ranging styles and techniques, from the seventh-century five-storied pagoda at Horyuji temple in Nara to the 1933 Nihombashi Takashimaya department store in Tokyo. Also included is a chapter on architectural plans, tools, and other materials illustrating the “traditional skills, techniques and knowledge of the conservation and transmission of wooden architecture in Japan,” which was inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2020. The accompanying discussion details efforts to overcome today’s challenges in passing Japan’s architectural heritage on to the next generation, including attracting and training new artisans, furthering skills, and securing tools and raw materials.

Résumé:
This first monograph from Dutch architect and urban planner Kees Christiaanse and his firm, Kees Christiaanse Architects & Planners, or KCAP, follows the conception and realization of their most important designs. KCAP works at the interface between urban planning and architecture, combining the fields. Their broad range of projects includes large-scale urban and landscape planning, complex inner city regeneration and restructuring, and the same sorts of new building commissions that keep conventional architects in business. As Europe’s attention has shifted to the revival of urban areas, KCAP has done pioneering work at former dockland and industrial locations and on the waterfronts of major rivers, in projects where the firm often acts as supervisor, urban planner and architect at once. In the space of 15 years, KCAP has grown into an international office with an impressive built oeuvre that challenges the way architecture and urban planning are conceived. This survey and analysis of their work brings their ideas and experience to readers curious about urban revival both abroad and at home.
