Résumé:
"La Jetée", the legendary science fiction film about time and memory after a nuclear apocalypse, was released in 1964 and is considered by many critics to be among the greatest experimental films ever made. (It provided the basis for Terry Gilliam's 1995 film 12 Monkeys) Chris Marker, who is the undisputed master of the film essay, composed this postapocalyptic story almost entirely of black-and-white still photographs. The story concerns an experiment in recovering and changing the past through the action of memory, yet the film can be read as a poem dominated by a single moving image, which in its context becomes one of the supreme moments in the history of film. This Zone Books edition reproduces the film's original images along with the script in both English and French.

Andy Warhol: blow job
$16.00
(disponible sur commande)
Résumé:
In Andy Warhol's silent black-and-white movie, Blow Job (1964), a youth is filmed as he is apparently being given the sex act named in the title. The 35-minute film is accentuated by the paucity of expression on the actor's face: we see only his head and shoulders, rigidly framed so that all offscreen space has to be imagined, or avoided. In this extended examination of(...)

In this extended examination of Blow Job, Peter Gidal deciphers the structures, abstract and concrete, of Warhol's crucial film. Warhol's techniques—the use of the close-up, the general use of camera movement, and the complete theatrical mise en scène—(especially when compared to the Godardian cinéma vérité of the time) make the materiality of the film process, its making and viewing, ineluctably present. An important experimental filmmaker, Gidal has had retrospectives at the London Film-Maker's Co-op; the Centre Pompidou, Paris; the National Film Theatre, London, as well as in Japan and San Francisco. He taught advanced film theory at the Royal College of Art, London, from 1971-1983.

Résumé:
The film "Il deserto rosso" (The Red Desert) by Michelangelo Antonioni, produced in the industrial region around Ravenna, Italy, in 1964, is considered one of the most important works in contemporary film history. Because of its innovative use of color, uncomfortably slow pacing, and existential environment, the film has long held appeal to filmmakers, artists, and photographers. As a response to the film, a joint endeavor between the students at the Academy of fine Arts, Leipzig, led by artists and professors Joachim Brohm and Anna voswinckel, with the photo initiatives Linea di Confine and Osservatorio fotografico, Italy, were asked to create an exhibition of living photographers influenced by the film. The catalog features more than thirty photographers, all associated in some way with the university and photo initiatives. The photographers were asked to provide their reaction to the film along with their associated images. The project was then exhibited at SK Stiftung Kultur (Cologne, September 2017January 2018). Among the featured artists are Joachim Brohm, Guido Guidi, Valentina Seidel, and Francesco Neri.
