"Against the grain" features the work of three studios of the Louis I. Kahn Visiting Assistant Professors at Yale. Marcelo Spina and Georgina Huljich in "Brutal beauty: piles, monoliths and the incongruous whole" explored ways to make mute icons through monolithic form so that the buildings were foreign to their context and difficult to read formally for a film center in Los Angeles. Dan Wood in "Boulevard Triumphant: ecological infrastructure, architecture, modernization, and the image of the city" a studio for a civic center in Gabon that challenged the architectural language in Africa beyond the clichés and nostalgia to create an architecture that embodied a new ambition. Lisa Gray and Alan Organschi in "Timber innovation district: new timber technologies and contemporary high performance wood architecture" researched wood as a material for larger-scale projects for a site on New Haven’s working waterfront, with projects ranging from bridges to manufacturing facilities and multi-family housing. The term 'geoengineering' refers to technologies that counteract the effects of anthropogenic climate change by deliberately intervening in Earth systems. In the midst of a climate crisis, and with disparate views on whether planetary-scale design is the appropriate response at all, 'The Planet After Geoengineering' employs a speculative fiction approach to think with and against geoengineering as a form of planetary management. The graphic novel makes climate engineering and its controversies visible in a series of five stories that are collectively assembled into a planetary section from the deep underground to outer space. Each geostory - Petrified Carbon, Arctic Albedo, Sky River, Sulfur Storm, and Dust Cloud - depicts possible future Earths that we come to inhabit on the heels of a geoengineering intervention all while situating such promisory visions within a genealogy of climate-control projects from nineteenth-century rainmaking machines and volcanic eruptions to Cold War military plans. Such fabrications of an engineerable earth open a space to forge a new geo-politics that includes the actual Earth - its dimensions, processes, and lifeforms - as constitutive of design and the planet.

Celebrated artist Keith Haring (1958–1990) has been embraced by popular culture for his signature bold graphic line drawings of figures and forms. Like other graffiti artists in the 1980s, Haring found an empty canvas in the advertising panels scattered throughout New York City’s subway system, where he communicated his socially conscious, often humorous messages on platforms and train cars. Over a five-year period, in an epic conquest of civic space, Haring produced a massive body of subway artwork that remains daunting in its scale and its impact on the public consciousness. Dedicated to the individuals who might encounter them and to the moments of their creation, Haring’s drawings now exist solely in the form of documentary photographs and legend. Because they were not meant to be permanent—only briefly inhabiting blacked-out advertising boards before being covered up by ads or torn down by authorities or admirers—what little remains of this project is uniquely fugitive. Within the infinite ''space of possibilities'' of architecture, PPAG architects are permanently searching for relevance and social utility, tracking down the architectural expression of the respective society, the ''necessary new'' in all its complexity. The exhibition is a plea for an unbiased, brave look at architecture and urban development. A view that sees development as a necessity, even if it surprises and irritates at first glance. Especially in view of the current global challenges, we need the courage to take alternative paths. The office's work is based on trust in the collective planning abilities; on the fact that through intensive engagement and thinking ahead, solutions can be found for a good future for all of us. The diversity of the''‘space of possibilities'' is presented in a special way in the exhibition of PPAG architects at the Aedes Architecture Forum. Maisel’s work has always been concerned with processes of memory, excavation, and transformation. These themes are given new form in his latest work, History’s Shadow. In this series, Maisel re-photographs x-rays from museum archives that depict artifacts from antiquity, scanning and digitally manipulating the selected source material. X-rays have historically been used by art conservators for structural examination of art and artifacts much as physicians examine bones and internal organs; they reveal losses, replacements, construction methods, and internal trauma invisible to the naked eye. By transcribing both the inner and outer surfaces of their subjects simultaneously, they form spectral images of indeterminate space, depth, and scale. The resulting photographs seem like transmissions from the distant past, both spanning and collapsing time. They express – through feeling and art, as well as science and reason – the shape-shifting nature of time itself, and the continuous presence of the past contained within us. The book contains an original short story by Jonathan Lethem that was inspired by Maisel’s images.

This is the first full-scale study of Wodiczko's work, its ethico-political imperatives, and the diverse interpretive lenses which accompany its theorization. Developed in close collaboration with the artist, and bringing together an array of essays by leading scholars from a variety of disciplines, the book represents the most significant and sustained engagement with the artist's practice to date. By nature, Wodiczko's work is often controversial and the book looks at his development of a series of nomadic instruments for both homeless and immigrant operators that function as implements for survival, communication, empowerment, and healing. The Homeless Vehicle project in New York City, equips nomadic 'evicts' with tools for self-articulation, whilst the elaborate Xenology instruments are designed to empower the 'immigrant' by providing access to speech and figuration in the public realm. Like much of his work, his interrogative designs and portable instruments are animated by a desire to bring the socially opaque into the public sphere of appearances, to restore voice and visibility to those rendered mute within the parameters of the public domain.

This book is published in conjunction with the exhibition Moholy-Nagy/In Motion introducing works spanning the full oeuvre of Moholy-Nagy (1895-1946), an artist who brought new vision to the art of the 20th century. As a prominent member of the avant-garde art movements between the two World Wars, he developed an artistic ideal of creating works of light and motion. The pursuit of his career as a creative artist and art educator took Moholy-Nagy from his native Hungary to Vienna, then on to Germany, the Netherlands and Great Britain and finally to the United States. Working in painting, photography, sculpture, film, graphic design, stage design and publishing, Moholy-Nagy’s career addressed many of the new issues confronting art in the 20th century, such as the relationship between art and industrial technology and the new media of information and communications. This exhibition marks Japan’s first full-scale retrospective of the art of Moholy-Nagy and spans the artist’s full career from its earliest years to its last in some 300 works and related materials and documents.
