Résumé:
The commons as a contested political idea has been continually articulated and reproduced in many disciplines and in relation to specific historical and geographical contexts. Since the 1960s, the concept of commons has started to play an increasingly important role in the field of urban studies. While commons are usually perceived as the material spaces of the city such as streets, parks, public spaces, etc., they are also perceived as the immaterial public realm- including subaltern and mainstream culture, knowledge, language, and modes of sociality. As the commoning process continuously involves the substance of urban spaces, be it physical or virtual, the concept of commons has actively contributed to reshaping spatial imaginaries such as urban islands, archipelagos, and thresholds. This issue of 'New Geographies' proposes the concept of commons as a mode of thinking that challenges assumptions in the design disciplines such as public and private spaces, local and regional geographies, and capital and state interventions. It expands the production of space as the commons into a planetary territory all the way from the intimate and subjective scale of the body to the connected material and immaterial spaces. In doing so, NG 12 aims to foreground the significance of political thinking in the process of space production, and invites to imagine alternative social relations and modes of urbanization.

Résumé:
Homelessness is one of the most pressing social challenges of our time, and is closely linked to issues of urban design and architecture. Homeless people are part of urban society and depend on accessible public spaces and urban infrastructure. Yet, in cities around the world, local governments use policies and urban planning to ward off street people, aiming at making them invisible in the cityscape and deliberately impeding certain forms of stay. Urban design always reflects power structures—it can exclude or open up avenues for participation. ''The Roofless Truth'' brings together contributions by international researchers and practitioners from the fields of architecture, urban development and design, sociology, ethnology, social work, and education. It offers academic analyses and essays, field reports, and student proposals for interventions in public space, and features award-winning projects and initiatives in Canada, Germany, Iran, Switzerland, and the US. The book highlights how public spaces should be designed to offer protection, dignity, and opportunities for homeless people, and to facilitate encounters and interaction. The featured examples impressively demonstrate that even the smallest spatial decision can determine inclusion or exclusion. ''The Roofless Truth'' paints a multifaceted picture of planning and design as a social practice beyond representation and prestige.

In 2003, he realized one of his first architectural projects : for his artist-and-gallerist friend Kenny Schachter he designed the multifunctional gallery space conTEMPorary in New York. This experimental space became programmatic for their further collaboration, up to their latest project in King’s Cross, London. Over the past years, Vito Acconci has moved towards architecture. Today’s Acconci Studio covers planning for such diverse projects as the Skateboard Park in San Juan, the Inside-Out Bookstore for Documenta X, or an urban planning for Tel Aviv. Vito Acconci and Kenny Schachter met for two discussions in London and Basel in 2004 and 2005.

This publication presents local and international voices providing a critical snapshot of recent Chilean urban projects, public spaces, and architectures. It explores the credentials and potentials of Chilean contemporary practices beyond the external categorizations that have received from specialized media, analyzing them instead in relation to the city and the question of public space. This book shows a selection of projects made by Chilean scholars Luis Eduardo Bresciani, Romy Hecht, and Rodrigo Pérez de Arce, which is assessed by the international scholars Saskia Sassen, Stan Allen and Iñaki Ábalos, and it's followed by the conversations between them moderated by Columbia GSAPP Professors Clara Irazábal, Galia Solomonoff and Enrique Walker, plus a reflection on Chilean cities and public space by Mark Wigley.

Résumé:
Typology+ documents and analyzes roughly one hundred international housing structures. It uses diagrammatic drawings to elaborate a broad and varied range of residential types and present them systematically. In the process, it examines variants under the categories of access, space (ground plan and open space), and morphology, supplemented by detailed typological descriptions and the elaboration of the special qualities of each individual type. More general essays draw connections between the housing types and twentieth-century reference projects. All of the projects are newly drawn to uniform standards; every project is presented with its ground plan drawn to a scale of 1:200. Site maps, sections, elevations, and photographs illuminate the urban setting, the building structure and design, and the spatial and functional qualities of each residential structure.

Résumé:
The conversion and revitalisation of old industrial premises is a construction task which is increasingly important in the transition from an industrial society to a service society. The architect Michael A. Landes converted the site of the Union brewery in Frankfurt into a new urban district for the investor Ardi Goldman by cautiously supplementing the existing substance with a new building. This ensemble situated in Hanauer Landstrasse, Frankfurt's centre for creative people of all kinds, is convincing in the power of its architectural language and in its urban quality. A fine balance of access space and open spaces makes it into a city which is open for a wide range of uses.

This latest issue takes us to Shenzhen to check out some of the latest projects to be completed in the Chinese city nearby Hong Kong. With the Sea World Culture and Arts Center, Maki and Associates adds an important cultural space to Shenzhen’s waterfront. Elsewhere, the architects of the Shenzhen-based firm Urbanus added a new typology to Chinese urban landscapes: an urban village on the roof of a conventional mall. Heatherwick Studio shows us the art of reinvention with the conversion of a decommissioned grain silo in Cape Town. The imposing silo has been turned into an art gallery with a hotel. Mark asks how works of art can compete with the building’s compelling transformation.

Résumé:
Finizio’s theme is one we can see on the streets: having changed the 19th-century city into a “metropolis” of suburbs and highways, the car as an object is, in turn, changing in relation to the modern city. A leading Italian design professional, Finizio has gathered an international symposium of architects to explore how urban planning, architecture, and design ideas can create a new design philosophy for the automobile as a sort of domestic moving space that interacts with the new urban environment. This richly illustrated book focuses on the relationship between the static city and “mobile architecture” of the car through the works of some of the most important contemporary international architects such as Frank Gehry, Rem Koolhass, Jean Nouvel, Massimiliano Fuksas, and Alessandro Mendini. This is an urgent, exciting design mission that finally deals with how thinking about the urban car must coevolve in profound new ways.
