Résumé:
With the many additions to the campus of Stanford university since the publication of this book, including the Frances Arrillaga alumni center by Hoover Associates / The SWA Group, the James H. Clark center for bio sciences – bio engineering by Foster and Partners / Peter Walker and Partners, and the Carnegie institution by Esherik Homsey Dodge and Davis, it is time for a revised edition of this guide. The original 1891 campus, conceived by Frederick Law Olmsted and executed by architects Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge, balances architecture, landscapes, and the natural surroundings in a composition of classic formal beauty. Stanford is a model of university design, from the nineteenth-century Memorial court and Main quad to twentieth-century buildings and restorations that respect the historic campus while contributing to modern design. This revised edition features 16 new pages on the additions to the campus and many updated entries with new photography.

Résumé:
Reinhold Martin and Claire Zimmerman bring together essays from an array of scholars exploring the troubled relationship between architecture and antidemocratic politics. Comprising detailed case studies throughout the world spanning from the early nineteenth century to the present, "Architecture against Democracy" analyzes crucial occasions when the built environment has been harnessed as an instrument of authoritarian power. Alongside chapters focusing on paradigmatic episodes from twentieth-century German and Italian fascism, the contributors examine historic and contemporary events and subjects that are organized thematically, including the founding of the Smithsonian Institution, Ellis Island infrastructure, the aftermath of the Paris Commune, Cold War West Germany and Iraq, Frank Lloyd Wright’s domestic architecture, and Istanbul’s Taksim Square. Through the range and depth of these accounts, "Architecture against Democracy" presents a selective overview of antidemocratic processes as they unfold in the built environment throughout Western modernity, offering an architectural history of the recent "nationalist international."

In this new book, Bruno Latour offers answers to questions raised in "We Have Never Been Modern", a work that interrogated the connections between nature and culture. If not modern, he asked, what have we been, and what values should we inherit? Over the last twenty-five years, Latour has developed a research protocol different from the actor-network theory with which his name is now associated—a research protocol that follows the different types of connectors that provide specific truth conditions. These are the connectors that prompt a climate scientist challenged by a captain of industry to appeal to the "institution" of science, with its army of researchers and mountains of data, rather than to “capital-S Science” as a higher authority. Such modes of extension—or modes of existence, Latour argues here—account for the many differences between law, science, politics, and other domains of knowledge.

Résumé:
Why did British industrial cities build art museums? By exploring the histories of the municipal art museums in Birmingham, Liverpool, and Manchester, Transformative Beauty examines the underlying logic of the Victorian art museum movement. These museums attempted to create a space free from the moral and physical ugliness of industrial capitalism. Deeply engaged with the social criticism of John Ruskin, reformers created a new, prominent urban institution, a domesticated public space that not only aimed to provide refuge from the corrosive effects of industrial society but also provided a remarkably unified secular alternative to traditional religion. Woodson-Boulton raises provocative questions about the meaning and use of art in relation to artistic practice, urban development, social justice, education, and class. In today's context of global austerity and shrinking government support of public cultural institutions, this book is a timely consideration of arts policy and purposes in modern society.
