Résumé:
Mass Studies was founded in 2003 by Cho, Minsuk in Seoul, Korea, as a critical investigation of architecture in the context of mass production, intensely over-populated urban conditions, and other emergent cultural niches that define contemporary society. Amid the many frictions defining spatial conditions in the 21st Century, namely past vs. future local vs. global, utopia vs. reality, and individual vs. collective. Mass Studies focuses on the operative complexity of these multiple conditions instead of striving for a singular, unified perspective. For each architectural project that exists across a wide range of scales, Mass Studies explores issues such as spatial systemps/matrixes, building materials/techniques, and typological divergences to foster a vision that allows the discovery of new socio/cultural potential.

This volume is a theory of contemporary architecture, spanning the work of 112 practices in 750 images. Against the popular characterization of contemporary architecture as a centerless field where anything goes and everything is possible, the book argues that much recent work belongs to a collective undertaking. Underneath the impression of kaleidoscopic difference produced by the rapid circulation of design images, there is a shared mechanism, an agreement about how architectural objects emerge from the procedures of design. This mechanism, which we call "Inscription", manages to both offer fundamentally intelligible form to architecture’s audiences, while at the same time advancing the field toward novel outcomes. The ensuing work is nothing less than democratically optimistic in its wide appeal and challenging in its cuts against convention.

Each of the contributors has responded to a set of 20 questions on the multiple conditions under which particular ideas and words enter architectural discourse through publication. The resulting critical positions and observations are as diverse as the magazines from which they originate, and range from the oldest student-edited journal (Perspecta) to a research collective that at the time of writing was on the cusp of being launched ([bracket]). Also included are contributions from the editors of 306090, AA Files, Actar, An Architektur, Footprint, Grey Room, Harvard Design Magazine, Hunch, Interstices, Log, Manifold, Mark, New Geographies, OASE, Praxis, Scapes, UME and Volume. 20/20 is a timely publication that provides today's architectural reader with concise viewpoints from the editors behind the magazines behind architectural culture.

Résumé:
This monograph documents, for the first time, the work of the Liberec Association of Engineers and Architects--known as SIAL--founded in 1968 by the Czech architects Karel Hubacek, Miroslav Masák and Otakar Binar. Joined by other prominent modernist architects in Prague, the group was active into the 1980s. Despite difficult political circumstances, SIAL gained recognition both at home and among Western architects. This book looks at the work of the Liberec collective in its full scope. The first three chapters, presenting SIAL’s production from the 60s, 70s and 80s, are followed by an analysis of 25 of their most important projects and buildings, as well as profiles of the most prominent SIAL architects, with a supplement comprising almost 500 reproductions.

Résumé:
Echoes of the Future is a compilation of recent graphic design and illustration that is inspired by our collective visual memory. Today’s young designers are not copying elements from classic modernism, letterpress printing, and other design styles of the past, but rather, they are synthesizing them to create a new aesthetic that emanates quality, timelessness, and sustainability. This book showcases an up-to-the-minute style trend that promotes the impression of visual longevity in these times of economic uncertainty and contrasts sharply with the rapidly shifting styles of previous years that seemed out-of-date almost immediately. While the work featured in Echoes of the Future deliberately seems older, one realizes how clearly different and contemporary it is when confronted with genuine examples from the past.

Résumé:
Virginia Woolf, to whom university admittance had been forbidden, watched the universities open their doors. Though she was happy that her sisters could study in university libraries, she cautioned women against joining the procession of educated men and being co-opted into protecting a civilization with values alien to women. Now, as Woolf's disloyal (unfaithful) daughters, who have professional positions in Belgian universities, Isabelle Stengers and Vinciane Despret, along with a collective of women scholars in Belgium and France, question their academic careers and reexamine the place of women and their role in thinking, both inside and outside the university. They urge women to heed Woolf's cry-Think We Must-and to always make a fuss about injustice, cruelty, and arrogance.

City Lust is a timely dialogue between words and images about a crucial moment in our recent history: the apotheosis of globalization and its current unraveling. In this book, Charlie Koolhaas—an artist, photographer, and writer—takes us to London, Guangzhou, Lagos, Dubai, and Houston, cities in which she has either lived or worked. Her personal and humorous account explores the rapid changes taking place in these culturally vastly different metropolises that are being united by the influences of global trade and the evolution of a shared global culture. A captivating combination of photographic documentary and written testimony, City Lust portrays a global landscape that contradicts the current pessimism—to reveal unexpected creativities, connections, and collective references that emerge despite huge global and economic divides.

It is a book that demands that all cast off the burden of debt and go out onto the street - for a true democracy necessitates a commitment where one acknowledges that there is nothing left to hang on to, that there is nothing left to lose and everything to transform. These are pages that fan the flames of bonfires and simple music. Résumé:
Our urban spaces today struggle to thrive in the face corporate greed, increasing privatization, and rising inequality. "Unlocking Sustainable Cities" offers a way forward, challenging the unsustainable and damaging practices our cities are mired in and paving the way for alternative urban futures. Across the world, people are implementing promising new practices—from transforming abandoned public spaces and setting up community co-operatives, to rewilding urban nature and powering up civic energy. Paul Chatterton explores how these grassroots experiments harness the creative power of the collective to transform our city systems, from transportation, energy, and economy, to community, democracy, and nature. Imagining radical alternatives—such as car-free, post-carbon, “bio cities”—this is a toolkit for realizing a better urban future.
