Résumé:
Perspecta 31 examines the relationship between architectural design and structural engineering through the processes and products of both disciplines. The contributing architects, engineers, and historians explore how structures reflect both the professions and the cultures that produce them. The authors' common approach to structure, which carefully considers context, reveals the politics, economic influences, design ideas, and chance circumstances that influence its configuration. The resulting series of articles and case studies shows how one can understand structures that are embedded in architecture. The journal looks specifically at issues of collaboration between architects and engineers. It also addresses the relationship of structural form to materials, the transition from conceptual to actual structures, and the cultural history of architectural and industrial structures. Reflecting the theme of structure as process, the journal documents an ongoing conversation between the editors, contributors, and others. The twelve articles are followed by short responses, and major themes emerging from the articles are identified and explored by the editors. The journal concludes with the results of an informal survey of architects on the role of structure in the design process. Contributors include Thomas H. Beeby, Eric DeLony, Gregory K. Dreicer, Hugh Dutton, Lucie Fontein, Antonio Juarez, Guy Nordenson, Alan Organschi, Tom F. Peters, Herman D. J. Spiegel, Carles Vallhonrat, Peter D. Waldman.

Résumé:
Taiwan is densely populated along the island's perimeter and largely covered with steep, rugged mountain ranges spanning from north to south. Strong ties exist between the authorities, academics, developers, building professions, and citizens, and despite its volatile political and challenging economic situations, the administering of public works and commissioning of various commercial projects has maintained its creativity and rationality. Through first-hand experience the magazine explores more than 20 projects borne out of the unique conditions on Taiwan, among them works by Mecanoo, Jun Aoki, Jay Chiu, OMA, Casagrande Laboratory, Fieldoffice Architects, and others.

Résumé:
The first of two features in this issue presents five projects recently designed by contemporary Chilean offices, all manifestations of an architectural style meant to enhance life in isolation, away from the city and embedded in the natural landscape. Highlighted are houses by Pezo Von Ellrichshausen, Max Núñez, Ampuero Yutronic, Schmidt Associates Architects, and Felipe Assadi Arquitectos. The second feature, entitled ''Against the Typology'', explores five new manifestations in housing for students, showing how the collective dynamics and programme inherent to these buildings and spatial sequences has influenced the architectural conception to the point of characterising it.

Résumé:
The concepts of public and private are not diametrically opposed, but rather exist on a continuum. The success of public architecture is determined by the interaction between the two, for both the individual and the collective. Here ''C3'' considers how public ownership and privatisation play out across several typologies, from open spaces and swimming pools, to mixed-use buildings and museums. Among the featured projects are the Amos Rex Museum by JKMM Architects, Dominique Perrault's Paris Longchamp Racecourse, Aarhus Harbour Bath by BIG, the Palestinian Museum by Heneghan Peng Architects, and the Apple Piazza Liberty by Foster + Partners.
