Résumé:
Recalling the short-lived Bureau de recherches surréalistes of 1924–1925 - part information centre and ‘public relations’ office, and part surrealist archive - Mark Dion has trawled the Manchester Museum’s own collections and found the raw material for this book and a new installation in the museum. Museums’ attempts to classify and present the world in miniature inevitably mean that much of their collections are forgotten and marginalized. Renowned for his work exploring taxonomy, archaeology and ecology, Mark Dion in his "Bureau" documents his opportunistic encounters with the Museum of Manchester’s neglected drawers and overlooked recesses that are home to redundant labels, orphaned mounts, defunct teaching models, botanical freaks, Egyptian fakes and the minutiae that have fallen through the cracks of museum practice and lain abandoned. Dion’s "Bureau of the Centre for the Study of Surrealism and its Legacy" is both a repository for the detritus of museum life and a working process, classifying the museum’s un-classifiable whilst exploring the bureaucratic workings of the institution.

Résumé:
The Ecole cantonale d'art de Lausanne (ECAL) has evolved from a regional school into an internationally renowned institution. This success story owes much to ECAL director Pierre Keller, but there is also a diverse team of instructors and students, whose work--much of which is quite well known--is showcased in this volume. Invaluable for any instructor in the field of design, the teaching principles that have led to ECAL's rise are documented, along with accounts of its subsequent successes. Today ECAL is at the top of the international game in graphic design, photography and, especially, industrial design. ECAL frequently garners commissions from museums and companies like Christofle, Swarovski, Nestle and Coca-Cola and has been included in numerous exhibitions and publications. In addition to staff and students, key players in the world of design and criticism, such as Paola Antonelli, Stephen Shore, Rolf Fehlbaum, Paolo Roversi, Ronan Bouroullec and Fernando and Humberto Company contribute a professional perspective.

Published on the occasion of the exhibition at National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, March 27, 2009–August 2, 2009 Foreword by Martin E. Sullivan Although scholars have explored Duchamp's use of aliases, little attention has been paid to how this work played into, and against, existing portrait conventions. Nor has any study yet compared these explicitly self-constructed projects with the large body of portraits of Duchamp by others. Inventing Marcel Duchamp showcases approximately one hundred never-before-assembled portraits and self-portraits of Duchamp. The (broadly defined) self-portraits and self-representations include the famous autobiographical suitcase Boîte-en-Valise and Self-Portrait in Profile, a torn silhouette that became very influential for future generations of artists. The portraits by other artists include works by Duchamp's contemporaries Man Ray, Alfred Stieglitz, Francis Picabia, Beatrice Wood, and Florine Stettheimer as well as portraits by more recent generations of artists, including Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Sturtevant, Yasumasa Morimura, David Hammons, and Douglas Gordon.

Résumé:
In 2003, Columbia University began planning an expansion into neighboring Manhattanville, the site of the soon-to-open campus designed by the Renzo Piano Building Workshop and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. The story of the project is a complex one—a university bursting at the seams, the changing imperatives of research facilities, large-scale investment in underground infrastructures, a controversial use of eminent domain, the commissioning of celebrated architects, and a remarkable campaign of community engagement all combining to reshape the public face of a venerable institution. Bringing together conversations with the architects and planners designing the Manhattanville campus, the educators who will inhabit its buildings, and essays from urban and architectural historians, this book both documents the making of Manhattanville and engages the contested history of public planning and the private university.Featuring contributions from Amale Andraos, Carol Becker, Elizabeth Diller, Steven Gregory, Maxine Griffith, Tom Jessell, Robert Kasdin, Laura Kurgan, Reinhold Martin, Lois Mazzitelli, Philip Palmgren, Charles Renfro, Marilyn Taylor, and Anthony Vaccione.
