Résumé:
From Roman times to the present, knowledge of plants and their cultivation have exerted a deep impact on cultural changes. This book highlights the religious, artistic, political, and economic consequences of horticultural pursuits. Far from a mere trade, horticulture profoundly affected Jewish and Persian mystical poetry and caused deep changes in Ottoman arts. It contributed to economic and political changes in Judea, Al Andalus, Japan, Yuan China, early modern Mexico, Europe, and the United States. This book explores the roles of peasants, botanists, horticulturists, nurserymen and gentlemen collectors in these developments, and concludes with a reflection on the future of horticulture in the present context of widespread environmental devastation and ecological uncertainty.

Résumé:
Jan Lucassen provides an inclusive history of humanity’s busy labor throughout the ages. Spanning China, India, Africa, the Americas, and Europe, Lucassen looks at the ways in which humanity organizes work: in the household, the tribe, the city, and the state. He examines how labor is split between men, women, and children; the watershed moment of the invention of money; the collective action of workers; and at the impact of migration, slavery, and the idea of leisure. From peasant farmers in the first agrarian societies to the precarious existence of today’s gig workers, this surprising account of both cooperation and subordination at work throws essential light on the opportunities we face today.

Résumé:
Ai Weiwei, born in the Socialist People's Republic of China, is one of the most important artists of the present global art scene. For his provocative political opinion he had been taken under house detention - he plant a celebration for the official governmental demolition of his Studio. His creations are based on the idea to provoke discussions about their content. For example, he spread about 150 tons of porcelain sunflower seeds on the floor of the Tate Modern in London to remind especially young Chinese people of propagandistic pictures which show Mao Tse-tung in the middle of sunshine and sunflower seeds. This book embraces some of the astonishing works of the exceptional artist.

Résumé:
Shanghai has grown at a breathtaking pace since the 1990s. Housing developments are constantly multiplying, entire districts are demolished, residents are relocated, multilevel roads are built into the cityscape, and more and more areas are pinpointed for renewal. But how does this dramatic growth alter public space and people’s living environment, and what impact does it have on the inhabitants? These questions are urgent and relevant in megacities all over the world. In the exhibition “Shanghai (Urban Public) Space” curated by Anke Haarmann in 2008, artists, scientists, and philosophers from China and Germany sought answers to these questions; the results are presented in this publication, including one volume of texts and one of illustrations.

Résumé:
With a focus on social reality and a respect for local context and vernacular craftsmanship, Liu Jiakun's work shows a rare attempt to translate and transfer traditional Chinese cultural ethos into contemporary architectural language, and represents a fine quality of intertexture between individual and collective memories. Many of these projects throw light on the reciprocal relation between Chinese people's public life and urban cultural space. Aedes exclusively presents mainly local projects in Chengdu including West Village Yard. The exhibition unfolds urban evolutionary history and the genius loci of the city, as well as demonstrates Chengdu's humanistic standpoint in practicing a new model of urbanization. It aims to open a new chapter of urban development dialogue between Germany and China.

Where pictures stop being photography and become images. Olivo Barbieri has been working to represent space, especially urban space, since the 1970s. Various series of images document his research in this book. They include Viaggio in Italia, from the 1980s, a project directed by Luigi Ghirri; China (Far East), which looks at the big changes on the Asian continent; and Site Specific, a sequence of shots taken from a helicopter flying above the world’s major cities, which made him internationally renowned. The book retraces Barbieri’s themes and exploration, underscoring his constant attention to the idea of perception and his ability to envision and interpret reality. He casts quite some doubt over the conventional modes of representation through photography.
