This small-format volume presents more than 200 furniture and objects made between 1981 and 1986 for the Memphis collection. Memphis was an Italian design and architecture collective founded by Ettore Sottsass, a leading exponent of 1980s postmodernism. It was the outcome of a long process that began at the Olivetti company in Ivrea, where Sottsass had been the design coordinator since the late 1950s, and continued with the research of the radical architecture movements of the 1960s and 1970s, in Florence and Europe. The publication documents the eponymous 2022 Milan exhibition on the group, for which Memphis works were dynamically installed in chronological order in the style of a fashion show, with quotes by critics, architects and designers projected on the walls.

Indigenous peoples have faced the end of the world before. Now, humankind is on a collective march towards the abyss. Global pandemics, extreme weather, and massive wildfires define this era many now call the Anthropocene. From Brazil comes Ailton Krenak, renowned Indigenous activist and leader, who demonstrates that our current environmental crisis is rooted in society’s flawed concept of “humanity” — that human beings are superior to other forms of nature and are justified in exploiting it as we please. To stop environmental disaster, Krenak argues that we must reject the homogenizing effect of this perspective and embrace a new form of “dreaming” that allows us to regain our place within nature. In Ideas to Postpone the End of the World, he shows us the way

Résumé:
In the face of the radical convergence of a health crisis and an ecological crisis, it is not possible to return to the investigative trajectories on inhabitation and dwelling that yielded good results in the past. What is it that now defines inhabitation within the plurality of conditions, geographies, and politics that connote it? Lifelines is a work of collective research on the spaces where life intertwines, mingles, and twists in constant resistance to the mechanisms that capture, exploit, and create the social and environmental precariousness that characterizes the violent techno-capitalist present. The book investigates the roles and challenges of design in uncertain spaces and brings together empirical explorations from Italy, Ecuador, the US, Lebanon, Germany, and the UK.

Résumé:
Since the 1960s, the increasingly evident degradation of the planet has brought a new urgency to much new art and architecture. This book is the first publication to gather together artists from this period and onward, who have created utopian works and devised inspiring solutions for our planet. Radical Nature draws on ideas that have emerged from Land art, environmental activism, experimental architecture and utopian thought—ideas that propose a new “radical nature” to reconcile the earth's needs with those of humankind. Works by pioneering figures such as the architectural collective Ant Farm, visionary architect R. Buckminster Fuller and artists Joseph Beuys, Agnes Denes, Hans Haacke and Robert Smithson are presented alongside works by a younger generation including Simon Starling, Luke Fowler, R(n) and Philippe Rahm.

The Proceedings of the ACADIA 2014: Design Agency international conference contains the peer reviewed research papers presented at the 34th annual conference of the Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture. Presentations by keynote speakers and ACADIA Award recipients are also included. This volume brings together a spectrum of research and creative practice currently occurring within the ACADIA community. This combined research reflects new paradigms that are redefining contemporary architecture. Specialized computational design topics include cloud organization, big data, global project delivery, and new forms of collective intelligence in design, architecture, urbanism, fabrication and media arts. The event is supported by the combined research networks of the University of Southern California, University of California Los Angeles and Southern California Institute of Architecture.

Résumé:
The avant-garde Italian architecture collective Superstudio was founded in 1966 by Adolfo Natalini (1941–2020) and Cristiano Toraldo di Francia (1941–2019), and quickly leaped to the forefront of the 1960s radical architecture movement alongside the likes of Archigram and Haus-Rucker-Co. Through their architectural projects (housing, industrial buildings, banks, interiors), design objects, photocollages, drawings, texts, installations, models, films and exhibitions, Superstudio found brilliant and highly inventive ways in which to inhabit a world transformed by capitalist forces and technological evolutions. This slipcased, 400-page volume explores their oeuvre through the lens of ''migrations'' (migrazioni). Borrowed from Superstudio’s vocabulary, this term serves as a conceptual and poetic key to the group’s architecture and their works in all mediums.

Résumé:
The dream of the twentieth century was the construction of mass utopia. As the century closes, this dream is being left behind; the belief that industrial modernization can bring about the good society by overcoming material scarcity for all has been challenged by the disintegration of European socialism, capitalist restructuring, and ecological constraints. The larger social vision has given way to private dreams of material happiness and to political cynicism. Developing the notion of dreamworld as both a poetic description of a collective mental state and an analytical concept, Susan Buck-Morss attempts to come to terms with mass dreamworlds at the moment of their passing. She shows how dreamworlds became dangerous when their energy was used by the structures of power as an instrument of force against the masses. Stressing the similarities between the East and West and using the end of the Cold War as her point of departure, she examines both extremes of mass utopia, dreamworld and catastrophe. The book is in four parts. "Dreamworlds of Democracy" asks whether collective sovereignty can ever be democratic. "Dreamworlds of History" calls for a rethinking of revolution by political and artistic avant-gardes. "Dreamworlds of Mass Culture" explores the affinities between mass culture's socialist and capitalist forms. An "Afterward" places the book in the historical context of the author's collaboration with a group of Moscow philosophers and artists over the past two tumultuous decades. The book is an experiment in visual culture, using images as philosophy, presenting, literally, a way of seeing the past. Its pictorial narratives rescue historical data that with the end of the Cold War are threatened with oblivion and challenge common conceptions of what this century was all about.
