Résumé:
This important book tells the multifaceted story of humankind’s relationship with flooding, a story that is permeated with a history of both worship and fear. Modern water engineering has turned plains and valleys into fully inhabitable environments. At the same time, those environments have become highly vulnerable to climate change. In efforts to prevent future floods, countries are rediscovering adaptation strategies: making room for flooding, redistributing risks and reconsidering the use and legal status of floodplains. Through historical investigations and six contemporary projects implemented in four European countries, "Floodscapes" illustrates how flood-mitigation measures can be embedded in local space and culture. Merged with landscape development, agriculture, recreation, nature, and even urban growth, river management becomes a design issue, giving landscape architects and urban designers a prominent role in future transitions. This book provides an in-depth look into the most common natural disaster in the US, and the innovative solutions that have arisen.

Résumé:
Sometimes seen as an absence of color, white in fact reflects the purity of the entire spectrum. In the history of design, white houses often embody the bright, clean clarity associated with twentieth-century giants Le Corbusier, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Richard Meier. White Houses presents the most striking, innovative, and unusual white houses by contemporary architects, spanning the globe from Asia to the Americas. The featured houses represent every scale and a wide range of locations and terrains, from seaside retreats to space-saving urban homes and grand country residences. From radical new takes on traditional building forms in Latin America to state-of-the-art urban projects in Europe and Japan, each house employs the apparent simplicity of white to reflect light and accent materiality, pressing the frontiers of form to the point of abstraction. No longer an anonymous box, the contemporary white house is the embodiment of the architectural archetype, reinterpreted and refreshed.

Résumé:
A profound social change can be observed in the areas of mobility, work, and trade, as well as in the practice of faith, especially in cities. As a result, certain building typologies such as petrol stations, offices, shopping centers, cinemas, and churches are being used less, thus becoming increasingly obsolete and contributing to the obsolescence of the city. Three strategies must be considered for the efficient transformation of these structures: the conversion of existing architecture and the preservation of the gray energy they embody; the maximization of land use; and the strengthening of ecological functions to improve the urban microclimate and the quality of living space.

Résumé:
Since the late 19th century, the shop window has shaped the urban landscape, mediating between the promises of consumer goods and the desires of passersby. The exhibition "Fresh Window" at the Museum Tinguely, inspired by Marcel Duchamp's work "Fresh Widow," explores the window as a membrane between public space and hidden desire. Many artists not only earned a living through window displays but also used this setting as a testing ground to experiment with new practices. Works by artists such as Jean Tinguely, Andy Warhol and Marina Abramovic reveal how the boundary between consumer culture and artistic experimentation is continually renegotiated—sometimes ironically, sometimes shockingly.

Résumé:
Following the 1968 earthquake in Sicily, plans were produced for the total reconstruction of the destroyed town of Gibellina, inspired by the models of the English New Towns. After an initial phase in which international architects and artists participated in the urban redesign, in the late 1970s a series of seminars and workshops was held at the University of Palermo to take stock of the reconstruction. Oswald Mathias Ungers (1926–2007) was then called to design the town’s central area, which was still undefined. His Civic Centre proposal reflected on the relationship between built and public space, and between city, monument, and history. Ultimately, however, little was realized.

Résumé:
This illustrated monograph explores the city-building aspirations of the Brazilian modern masters through their buildings in Sao Paulo. Works by Vilanova Artigas, Lina Bo Bardi, Salvador Candia, Rino Levi, Oscar Niemeyer and Paulo Mendes da Rocha were designed in response to the chaotic growth of one of the world's largest metropolises. ''CIVITAS'' brings together for the first time a unique collection of nineteen buildings, proposing a fresh take on them through new photographs especially taken for the book and graphic elements re-drawn by the author. Some of the works are today references in the urban public space, underlining the contemporary relevance of this architecture.

Résumé:
"Trading Places" rethinks, develops, and tests design-driven practices and methods to engage with participation in public space and public issues. With this book we aim to help art and design researchers, students, practitioners, and the multiple stakeholders they collaborate with, to explore what participatory ways of working in our contemporary urban environment entail. Six approaches are discussed: intervention, performative mapping, play, data mining, modelling in dialogue, and curating. Each approach offers a different kind of logic and produces a different type of knowledge. "Trading Places" invites the reader to discover common ground, explore new territories, and exchange points of view – in short, to trade perspectives on issues of participation.

Résumé:
Dutch artist and designer Lizan Freijsen examines transformation and time, in which the unwanted gains significance. She meticulously documents a form of urban nature, classifying stains in a subjective order by giving names and categories to this pervasive phenomenon of slow changes and growth processes in our everyday surroundings. Manifesting the same way in many places in the world, the stain reads like a palimpsest – a layered and partly blotted-out history of a precise spot. Freijsen’s search for traces of moisture, fungus, and decay in the public space resulted in an extensive photographic archive, which she also uses as inspiration for her textile-based practice.
