This little paperback by Michel Gondry was inspired by his latest film, Be Kind Rewind. The movie stars Jack Black and Mos Def as two friends who enact lo-fi versions of popular Hollywood films such as Ghostbusters or Robocop and offer them for rental. They call this reappropriative and participatory practice "sweding," which is to say, "putting you into the things you like." At New York's Deitch Projects, in February and March of 2008, Gondry emulated the heroic example of his characters, constructing a do-it-yourself film studio in which any visitor could assemble their own film from extant plot summaries and rent the results. His aim: "I intend to prove that people can enjoy their time without being part of the commercial system and serving it... Ultimately, I am hoping to create a network of creativity and communication that is guaranteed to be free and independent from any commercial institution."

Résumé:
Although airports are now best known for interminable waits at check-in counters, liquid restrictions for carry-on luggage, and humiliating shoe-removal rituals at security, they were once the backdrops for jet-setters who strutted, martinis in hand, through curvilinear terminals designed by Eero Saarinen. In the critically acclaimed Naked Airport, Alastair Gordon traces the cultural history of this defining institution from its origins in the muddy fields of flying machines to its frontline position in the struggle against international terrorism. From global politics to action movies to the daily commute, Gordon shows how the airport has changed our sense of time, distance, and style, and ultimately the way cities are built and business is done. He introduces the people who shaped and were shaped by this place of sudden transition: pilots like Charles Lindbergh, architects like Le Corbusier, and political figures like Fiorello LaGuardia and Adolf Hitler. Naked Airport is a profoundly original history of a long-neglected yet central component of modern life.

Résumé:
Deichman Bjørvika, Olso’s new public library, was completed and opened in summer 2020 after a lengthy period of planning and construction. Located opposite the city’s Opera House and the Munch Museum, this imposing building fits into the ensemble in the new cultural quarter of the Norwegian capital. The project, designed by Lundhagem and Atelier Oslo Architects following an international architectural competition, was conceived around a radical paradigm of the library as a place for conviviality and substantial multimedia platforms in a conducive, unobtrusive environment. The publication documents in detail the planning and building process, from the first draft to the opening. Essays by the novelist Elif Shafak and the library’s long-term director Liv Sæteren explain the significance of the institution as an integrative social force, while Niklas Maak pays tribute to the building from the perspective of architectural criticism. Iwan Baan and Hélène Binet capture the architecture and its atmosphere in exquisite photographs.

Résumé:
The Open Call in Flanders (the Dutch-speaking, northern part of Belgium) is more than just another architecture competition: any governmental agency or public institution can choose to work with an Open Call for any given construction project. Since its invention by the first Flemish Government Architect Bob Van Reeth in 2000, more than 700 assignments have been published in this procedure, resulting in almost 350 completed public architectural and infrastructural projects so far. This volume compiles 70 of these, from all over Flanders—from its west coast to the Dutch border in the east—to illustrate the astounding quality of these projects. They prove that public architecture can be daring, thought-provoking, cooperative, and well-done at the same time. The book takes an extensive look at how this procedure works, how it is received by architects, politicians, and clients—and ultimately, at the outstanding public architecture in Flanders as an example for other countries to study closely.

Résumé:
The concept of an encyclopedic museum was born of the Enlightenment, a manifestation of society's growing belief that the spread of knowledge and the promotion of intellectual inquiry were crucial to human development and the future of a rational society. With Museums Matter, James Cuno, president and director of the Art Institute of Chicago, takes us on a brief tour of the modern museum, from the creation of the British Museum - the archetypal encyclopedic collection - to the present, when major museums host millions of visitors annually and play a major role in the cultural lives of their cities. Engaging with thinkers such as Edward Said and Martha Nussbaum, and drawing on examples from the politics of India to the destruction of the Bramiyan Buddhas to the history of trade and travel, Cuno makes a case for the encyclopedic museum as a truly cosmopolitan institution, promoting tolerance, understanding, and a shared sense of history - values that are essential in our ever more globalized age.
