Résumé:
Rich in images, "Asking Questions" offers a kaleidoscopic perspective of ten years of architectural design at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. The Gerrit Rietveld Academy works to a unique educational concept, as its students are encouraged to approach assignments in their own way. This is why its graduates cannot be called straightforward interior designers. Asking Questions paints a picture of the academy's conceptual approach to architecture through a historical perspective of its education, student statistics, an inventory of outstanding study assignments and an overview of work done by graduates once they had left the academy. Since then, they have been active in all branches of the design industry.

Résumé:
The idealized Western museum, as typified by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Museum, and the Museum of Natural History, has remained much the same for over a century: a uniquely rarified public space of cool stone, providing an experience of leisure and education for the general public while carefully tending fragile artifacts from distant lands. As questions about representation and ethics have increasingly arisen, these institutions have proclaimed their interest in diversity and responsible conservation, asserting both their adaptability and their immovably essential role in a flourishing and culturally rich society. With "Decolonize museums," Shimrit Lee punctures this fantasy, tracing the essentially colonial origins of the concept of the museum.

Résumé:
In 1879, Carpentry and Building magazine launched its first house design competition for a cheap house. Forty-two competitions, eighty-six winning designs, and a slew of near winners and losers resulted in a body of work that offers an entire history of an architectural culture. The competitions represented a vital period of transition in delineating roles and responsibilities of architectural services and building trades. The contests helped to define the training, education, and values of “practical architects” and to solidify house-planning ideals. The lives and work of ordinary architects who competed in Carpentry and Building contests offer a reinterpretation of architectural professionalization in this time period.

Besides his work as a painter, designer, and prolific writer of picture books, the Italian artist Bruno Munari (1907–1998) devoted himself to children’s art education. Although it is difficult to grasp the scope of his wide-ranging activities, regardless of the genre, Munari’s works are based on a simple idea and are immediately appealing to anyone of any age. The itinerant Japanese exhibition ''Bruno Munari: The Man Who Made the Useless Machines'' looks back at his career, which began with the Italian Futurists, by examining approximately 300 works. This comprehensive monograph complements and broadens the exhibition’s overview of his visionary life and work.

Résumé:
At a time when fundamentals of design education are being questioned and studios are being used as laboratories for everything ranging from design-build and fabrication practices to community service, material research, and multidisciplinary incubators, this volume of Catalyst positions the current pedagogy at the University of Virginia School of Architecture within an extended history of the school through an archival project that traces the lineages of its faculty. It considers design pedagogy through the lens of the formative experiences and agendas of the faculties of the Departments of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, examining their role in shaping the school’s direction, independent of top-down mandates and institutional agendas.

It is a true manual--in format and content--featuring design solutions that expand access to education, food, health care and affordable housing; increase social and economic inclusion; offer improved alternative transportation options, and provide a balanced approach to land use between the built and natural environments. Cooper Hewitt Curator Cynthia E. Smith traveled to post-industrial cities, urban areas impacted by natural disasters, sprawling cities, places of persistent poverty and major metropolitan regions. Her research yielded nearly 400 potential projects from over 30 states and three indigenous nations (Navajo, Lakota, Pueblo).

Résumé:
Ninety years after the Bauhaus first opened its doors in Dessau, ''Big Plans! Modern Figures, Visionaries, and Inventors'' examines for the first time the role of the Bauhaus in the early modernist vision of utopia. Not just an experimental forum for the avant-garde, the Bauhaus, once it moved to Dessau, became part of an industrial region that had been a hotbed of idealized planning for the future of humanity since the end of the First World War. This visionary futurist age of Saxony-Anhalt, reflected in its local architecture, industrial production, education and advertising, continued until the rise of the Nazi party in the 1930s.
