Résumé:
Author and artist Edmund de Waal gives us an intimate narrative history of his lifelong obsession with porcelain, or 'white gold.' A potter who has been working with porcelain for more than forty years, de Waal describes how he set out on five journeys to places where porcelain was dreamed about, refined, collected and coveted - and that would help him understand the clay's mysterious allure. From his studio in London, he starts by travelling to three 'white hills' - sites in China, Germany and England that are key to porcelain's creation. But his search eventually takes him around the globe and reveals more than a history of cups and figurines; rather, he is forced to confront some of the darkest moments of twentieth-century history.

Résumé:
With Skies of Concrete, Austrian architectural photographer Gisela Erlacher explores a fascinating subject for urbanization—our ability to live, work, and play in what might seem like the most inhospitable of places. Erlacher had long been fascinated with the ways existing structures are modified to meet new transport needs, but a house wedged between two bridges in her native Vienna inspired a more extensive exploration of the leftover spaces. Erlacher traveled to China, Britain, and the Netherlands, capturing exquisite photographs of bridges, viaducts, and multistory highways, which focus specifically on the vacant and disused spaces and situations created by their construction. Beneath and between these structures, we find housing, parking, and storage, but also skate parks, tea houses, and food stalls in varying shades of legality.

The Present is Paul Graham's contribution to street photography. It also completes Graham's trilogy project on America (with American Night (2003) and a shimmer of possibility (2007)). Most of the photographs were taken in the busiest parts of Manhattan (Penn Station, China Town, Times Square) between 2009 and 2011. At the first look, the photographs might seem boring and dull. In a way The Present is about nothingness, "nothing moments of life". The present is a period of time between the past and the future, also referred to as now. The images capture the same places, shot from the same position, with just few moments apart. While the street photography is about a perfect frozen moment, Paul Graham shifts it by creating a combinations before/after.

Résumé:
China’s spectacular growth has brought not just prosperity, but also serious damage to the environment. For photographer Andreas Seibert, the present state of the Huai River is a clear example of these problems. Several stretches of the river have been so seriously polluted by toxic waste that people are advised not to even touch the water. Seibert has traveled along the river from source to mouth in order to record how it changes from a stretch of water rising amidst unspoiled nature into a large and poisonous river. Pictures taken on his travels present the poor hinterlands which are generally forgotten in discussions on China, and show the people who live on and near the river — in a habitat on the brink of destruction.

Résumé:
“Conditional Design” is the name of a new design ethos formulated by graphic designers Luna Maurer, Jonathan Puckey and Roel Wouters, and artist Edo Paulus. It espouses a working method that involves drawing up arbitrary constraints and rules of play, fostering both a strongly collaborative spirit and unpredictable end results. Its workbook format organizes the material step by step, and the publication as a whole provides exciting ways for others - groups of children as well as artists and designers - to apply the method themselves. In accompanying essays, Andrew Blauvelt elaborates on the implications of such processes for art and design, and Koert van Mensvoort describes how Conditional Design could form the basis for the design and organization of the city of Zhiango, China, in 2050.

Résumé:
In these pages, Nicholas Basbanes shows how paper has been civilization’s constant companion. It preserves our history and gives record to our very finest literary, cultural, and scientific accomplishments. Since its invention in China nearly two millennia ago, the technology of paper has spread throughout the inhabited world. Basbanes traces paper’s trail from the earliest handmade sheets to the modern-day mills. Paper, yoked to politics, has played a crucial role in the unfolding of landmark events, from the American Revolution to Daniel Ellsberg’s Pentagon Papers to the aftermath of 9/11. Without paper, modern hygienic practice would be unimaginable; as currency, people will do almost anything to possess it; and, as a tool of expression, it is inextricable from human culture.

Résumé:
In his photographs, Olivo Barbieri (born 1954) depicts inhabited environments in such a way that unexplored facets of reality come to light. Urban centers in China or America dominate his series, alongside locations such as the Dolomite Mountains, the Alps or Capri as well as waterfalls in Canada, Argentina and Zimbabwe. From 2003 to 2013 he photographed more than 40 cities and megacities worldwide. One of the distinctive features of his photographs is an extremely low depth of focus that creates the impression that they depict miniature models. This feeling of estrangement is further intensified by his lengthy exposures of artificial illumination. Barbieri produced his first nightlight photographs in the early 80s in Italy. Ersatz Lights presents all of the artist's night landscapes for the first time.

Résumé:
One of art history's previously overlooked treasures--the vibrant ceramic tiles of Syria and especially Damascus-are the subject of this study by a leading Islamic art expert. Architectural ceramic decoration is one of the most celebrated manifestations of the arts of Islam. Spanning a period from the 13th to the 20th century, the tiles featured in this book exhibit a rich range of influences from Persia, Turkey, China and even Europe. A renowned specialist in the fields of Islamic and Indian art, Arthur Millner explores the historical context that allowed the uniquely creative achievement of Syrian craftsmen to flourish, and why tiles from this region are less restricted in artistic expression than those from better-known centers of production.
